I would say he is a better fighter and has slightly better stats.

Even if that's true, the difference is minimal. I don't see how he's getting past Maverick's armor before he gets killed trying.

He was taking it to Backlash who has better stats across the board, IMO. And the weaponry to get past Maverick's armor.
