Good question. For the sake of this thread i won't list any movies before the year 2000 and i'll also leave out Martial Arts movies.

As of right now. The movies that come to mind are

The Bourne movies
Craigs Bond flicks
Kill Bill

I know there are several movies i'm forgetting and my favorite action flicks are before 2000. Shoot em up comes close to.

Very good choices (though I've yet to see Quantum of Solace). If it counts, then I'd add The Dark Knight, and Iron Man was a lot of fun too. I've avoided Wanted, largely because I object to adaptations that have nothing in common with the source, and it doesn't really look like my kind of thing anyway...

I think a lot of people were disappointed with it as a follow up Bond film. If that makes sense? I viewed it that way and enjoyed it immensely.

Thanks. I might have to watch it straight after Casino Royale, then...

I would recommend that. smile

Oo yes Jaden mentioned Taken, thought that was rather excellent.

Aye, Taken was pretty good. I would personally say that the Bourne franchise is easily the highest quality action picture of the last bunch of years; it's stylish, gritty violence together with the adrenaline-pumping chases and fast fights is the template for the modern action picture, although the shaky-cam was criticized by some circles. Think about it: Bond-Craig and Taken both had fine action sequences, but their very style was highly inspired by the Bourne films. And these ones still do it better, anyhow. The plot is brilliant, too. Sure, it's not the most dramatic or intelligent one, but the plot twists and the sheer complexity of the thing was awesome. Ultimatum's ending is still one of the greatest things in modern action history.

That being said, though, movies like TDK and Casino Royale succeed better on the deeper level. Casino Royale was both intriguing and emotionally compelling, and TDK succeeded in creating an incredibly dense plot that is layered with thought-provoking themes and ideas. Both fuse this with sheer grit and stylishness.

Both are as good or better than any of the Bourne films, but those are simply the better 'action' movies.

Taken, Iron man.

Like McClane, Bryan Mills believes in absolutely no f***ing around.

And Iron Man takes the sci-fi/fantasy based action title, for me.

Speaking of McClane, Die Hard 4.0 was awesome too.

My latest favorite action movie would have to be Iron Man. I can not stop watching the movie. Every time I watch I notice something different about it.
