Complete awesomeness!!!! eek!

General Kaliero
Seeing Samus go melee is interesting. I'm hoping some of the 3rd person footage means what it seems to imply; that this will be mostly a 2.5-D sidescroller, with dramatic angles for big attacks.

Interestingly enough, after Retro's realistically-toned Samus, I'm not liking this glossy suit too much.

Mandrag Ganon
It looks like there will be First Person in it.

The shots are too quick to tell much, but it seems to me the majority of the game will be 3rd person, with the 1st person visor view likely contextual for specific sequences.

First_Tsurugi06
I see less "gloss" in this look than in Prime.

I'm gonna hope this is primarily a third-person game. I live real life in first-person view, and I don't need that kind of restriction in my video games.

That's what I thought.

Just posting the trailer.

I'm just hopeing it delves more into the fate of the Chozo.

Neo Darkhalen
I'm hoping for more info/details on Ridley myself, anyway it looks good.

Combination of 3rd person and first hmm, interesting.

Woah wait.....Mother Brain?!

Mandrag Ganon
Wait... was that Adam?

Yeah, the "Lady" quote implies rather heavily that that was Adam Malkovich.

SaTsuJiN
Amazing.. so does that make it a clone of samus?..

Morridini
Looked very interesting.

I've not played any Metroids enough to remember anything other then the Prime series, who is Adam?

Darth Jello
Did anyone else see the Super Metroid style mother brain in the trailer? I also for some reason thought that the GFM Trooper is Sylux.

Yes, I noted it in my post.

So this is pretty much Ninja Gaiden Metroid?

Sylux? Eh, the suit doesn't look green enough to be him IMO. Plus, the guy was smiling. Sylux wouldn't smile at Samus if he hated her.

I thought Sylux was blue...Then again, I am color blind. Now they just need to make a sequel to Prime 3 to explain the ending and a Zero Mission style remake of Metroid 2 (which they started making anyway and then abandoned after the DS was announced). Maybe they can kill two birds with one stone?

His stolen suit is blue for the most part, but it also has shiny green spots here and there, which were not present on the GFM Trooper.

Maybe mmm, but I doubt it.

General Kaliero
It's sad, too, because most Metroid fans haven't played Return of Samus, and it was actually a really good game and introduced a great many of the current series' staples.

I just looked at the trailer again and paused on the screen that was flashed for a second. It said "Living body arms development lab" across the top. Looks like clones. That does not help my trepidation.

Darth Jello
Update. the game is now called Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

I'm kinda hoping she doesn't even use the suit the first quarter of the game and that the end involves the theft of the metroid.

Oh well.

Cuz it's something new and original. Also, I'm pretty sure the used game store by my house has a couple of copies of metroid 2 for 10-20 bucks. I'm not sure if game force does online sales tho.

Doesn't mean it would be good. The idea sounds rather stupid IMO, but eh, you're entitled to your opinion too. I just don't want the series as a whole to slowly become more and more of a suitless Samus wank fest.

Lucky. *never saw them at any of my local game stores*=(

And I'm rather iffy about buying online. >.>

Darth Jello
You just have to find a non-chain used game store. Not that it should come up, but remember that Nintendo doesn't do region protection for their portable system so if you find foreign copy for cheap, you can play it on any nintendo portable console other than the DS.

First_Tsurugi06
I just hope that if they introduce a few potentially great supporting characters, they don't wing them out of the majority of the plot one tenth throught the game and worthlessly kill them off at their next appearance ala Metroid Prime 3

Oh God, I hope so too. Still rather bittersweet over what they did to Rundas and Gandrayda (never cared much for Ghor though).

But somehow, I won't be surprised if they kill off the black "Remember me?" guy.

I don't know, the main difference between Ridley, Mother Brain, and Kraid is that Ridley, and Mother Brain are not denizens of Zebes, whereas Kraid is.

It could span several different periods in Samus' life. Hell, from the looks of it, it could even be a re-imagining of Super Metroid which would honestly be the stupidest ****ing thing they could ever do.

Considering all the new characters I doubt it's a remake, the part where you see motherbrain blast the bigger metroid could easily be a flashback.

My understanding is that outside of Japan there will be a single trilogy release of all three games using the MP3 control scheme instead. Whilst it may seem a waste to buy MP3 again, you are still getting the first two for the price of one.

dadudemon
Game looks great and fun.

I wanted the MP games to be 3rd person, for the most part, anyway. I didn't like the visor view. It was always annoying when trying to find those little shits attacking from different places, outside of visor view.

And I haven't played MP3...but I've played and beaten, horrendously, all the other games...including M2.

lord xyz
This game really took me by surprise. I was thinking they'd take a break after MP3, or continue with the prime story arc after 3's hidden ending.

When I saw this, I did like the third person perspective, which would reminisce it back to the 2D games with the wall jumping and the 8 direction control, well, in 3D that would be 26 direction.

However, the whole anime graphics and high pitches samus voice, turned me away fast.

It looks like a bad movie adaptation.

I'll still be buying it, and I hope I'm wrong.

The Wii's slowly starting to develop the best exclusive library out of all the current gen platforms. Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade, Arc Rise Phantasia, The Last Story, Super Mario Galaxy 2, the next major console Zelda game, this etc..

Really hyped about this, should put the Metroid franchise back on the right tracks after the catastrophic failure that is the Metroid Prime series.

I dont know what planet you came from.. but on earth, they dont make a catastrophic failure 3 times.. and then on top of that re-release them in a trilogy box set (and in wii-ware form, if I'm not mistaken)

retro studio's artwork was amazing, and their take on the metroid lore was alot deeper than nintendo was willing to go

now with Team Ninja, we're stuck looking at what looks to be some kind of emo final fantasy-esque story telling

"oh my god.. who am I.. am I me.. or am I a clone of me *stands there looking pretty and depressed*"

I'm all for samus having some melee in this newest outing, but I hope it doesnt come at the cost of the lore or the characters

Metroid was dead before the Metroid Prime series. Seeing how highly praised the first game was (IGN compared it to Citizen Kane and EGM gave it 4 10s), you must be one of the few who thought the trilogy as a failure.

Not really like them, no. It is all about the change of developer.

With Wind Waker, some people were just put off as soon as they saw it. THis is different- nobody is actually SURE... they are just worried. They want it but... they dread it, not because of something they know they won't like, but because of the unknown.

Also at first I was wtfsurprised at the team up, but since I knew Team N before worked on a wii game (Ninja Turtles), I'm not as surprised as I took that into consideration. This game's impressive CGI quality is also not surprising considering Team Ninja helped make it. Not to say Nintendo can't make good CGI, by the way.

They want it but... they dread it, not because of something they know they won't like, but because of the unknown. So it's like when Capcom started making Zelda games and they turned out to be 4 of the best handheld games in the series. Being a wii game, I'm most worried about ease of controls and ease of ambidextrity. I loved Metroid Prime Trilogy and enjoy playing it but for the sake of orientation, I find myself holding the controllers right-handed which takes a little getting used to.

Ushgarak
No, it's not like that either, because that was a sideline and not the main series continuation.

Actiually if anything, it's more like when Retro first took over and made it first person, whoch obviously gives more faitrh. But there's no point pretending people are not worried,. They simply are.

Darth Jello
Capcom took over the series' traditional 2d gameplay style while Nintendo focused on the 3D stuff (and after playing the last 2 handhelds, I really miss capcom) so to me the comparison is valid.
I understand the worries because I've talked to people that hated the first two primes in their original versions (especially echoes) but enjoyed Prime Trilogy. Part of that is that echoes had unconventional gameplay and increased difficulty (kinda like Majora's Mask to Ocarina in that aspect) and because the initial releases of both Prime and Echoes had some frustrating glitches that got fixed in later pressings and on the wii. Other M seems like a return to more familiar territory so people are gonna be initially skeptical that it's not FPS and doesn't involve phazon.

Ushgarak
It's honestly not valid. The landmark Zelda games were all done in-house by Nintendo. A handful of handheld spn-offs is not the same thing at all.

If Capcom had done Ocarina of Time, Wnd Waker or Twilight Princess, you would be right. As it is, the situation is different. Nintendo have never handed the mainline Zelda franchise away, in a way they very muich HAVE done so with Metroid.

They also did it with Starfox to the point where they considered it a bit of a disaster.

The Scenario
I don't think Nintendo did hand the franchise to Team Ninja. The way I understood it was that Nintendo R&D has almost no experience in 3-D, so Team Ninja will handle that while R&D does the story and gameplay.

Plus, there's that "Project M," all the devolopers working together, that they keep talking about.

Mandrag Ganon

Catastrophic Failure? Metroid Prime is one of the best metroid games (My personal favorite) Echos, while not as good as Metroid Prime was still a great game and Corruption, once again nowhere near as good as prime was also an excellent game. Infact the only game with the Metroid Prime title that wasn't that great was Hunters, and it still wasn't a half bad game once you get used to the mildly irritating control scheme.

The Prime series added a depth to the Metroid series that had never before been seen, Prime 1 painting a beautiful picture of the destruction of the Chozo who lived on Tallon IV, Prime 2 showing the Valor of the Luminoth who fought against the Ing, even when defeat was innevitable, and Prime 3 wrapping it all up nicely (leaving a couple of unanswered questions, but what series doesn't) in a final effort to halt the destruction caused by Phaaze.

The Capcom Zelda games are NOT, I repeat NOT spin-offs. They are as much a part of the overall series as Ocarina of Time or Wind Waker. The only games that can be considered a spin-off of the Zelda series are games like Freshly Picked: Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland.

Darth Jello
Yup, they're all main series games. Together, the oracles games are pretty much the single largest Zelda experience ever btw.

Back to Metroid, another concern I have is a return to the speed run shit from the earlier 2D games which I honestly hated because it forced you to run through like a turd and do everything absolutely perfect to get a good ending instead of taking your time and enjoying the game.

Oh, and when are we gonna get a sequel to Hunters and a proper remake of Return of Samus?

See, that's exactly my point. No one really plays Metroid for its plot, compared to the better things about it like the gameplay, enemies, and atmosphere.

Well you don't wanna turn Metroid into Contra. It has to have some purpose and relation to the other characters. Plot is important.

Metroid was inspired by the Alien series. The plots of the main (non-Prime) series are pretty much the plot of the Aliens movies.

Oh, the stories in Metroid are not that bad... simple, yes... but not bad. And I thought prime had a good way of telling it's story while keeping Samus the lone warrior you know her to be. The Chozo Lores and Pirate Logs pushed the story forward while keeping the history of Tallon IV shrouded in mystery, I thought it was fairly well done, myself. And if you were patient enough to track down all the Chozo Lores the game painted a decent picture of the tragedy on Tallon IV.

Yeah, those were my thoughts, as well. That was one of the few things I enjoyed about the games. I didn't like the controls all that much. (I hear that playing it with the wii-mote makes them MUCH more enjoyable. Is that true and if so, why?)

I remember being drug into the mystery of the Chozo in Super Metroid. I really wanted to know WTF happened there. Super Metroid also had a great story: one of the best in a video game, IMO. It is one of my favorite games of all times. It wasn't just the stories, it was the little things, as well: such as the friendly animals that showed Samus how to user her abilities, without actually talking to her. Etc, etc. etc...

So Other M is a side-scroller, action-adventure, and 1st person shooter at once? How is that gonna work?

Hands On:

Metroid: Other M to bring you closer to Samus than ever

Sounds nice... Samus getting a voice thumb up

I like the idea of giving it a darker tone... now if they could do that with Zelda, I could finally be interested in it again.

not so into the "new way" of getting upgrades, though...

Ridley_Prime
mmm

Mandrag Ganon
I don't particularly like this unless there is a limit or recharge time for it...

Ms.Marvel
im not too keen on giving samus a voice TBH...

i cant help but get the feeling that its going to sound like either a somewhat childish or sexy white woman. at least in english.

Sin_Volvagia
Samus having a voice? Old news

In the trailer it sounded kinda surreal to me... When she said "I'm Samus Aran."

I seem to remember that in Prime, she was voiced by the woman who voiced Bastila Shan. (Well, her death scream and grunts when she gets hit or shot...)

The Scenario
Samus now has the ability to make missiles and shielding with her mind. The move is called "focus" or something to that effect. You need to be out of combat and standing still for it to work, I belive.

Ms.Marvel
...wut?

Ridley_Prime
... that's stupid.

Phanteros
The woman that voices Samus in the prime series also voice female shepard.

Ridley_Prime
Jennifer Hale? Yeah, she's pretty good.

Darth Jello
so sideways wiimote for regular third person and vertical for 1st person/aiming? I'm guessing the easiest way to do that is gonna be to keep both hands on it, left i front of right when aiming missiles.

Ms.Marvel
her voice sounds terrible.

takes away from the character imo

I'm sure you'll have the option to turn it off or turn on the japanese language.

Ridley_Prime
Meh.. At least it's better than her stupid Brawl voice.

Darth Jello
Dude, she fights pirates, bioweapons, and cosmic infestations. She's not on talk radio.

Eh, it's not that bad. The opening scene was leaked recently and Samus talks alot in it.

Most definately gonna have to play Super Metroid again before this comes out...

Darth Jello
Anyone think we'll finally see a midriff-bearing Samus in 3D?

yeah, english VA's are never really that good.. its a diamond-in-the-rough moment when you get a masterful english VA

For some odd reason I found the english voices for Lost Odyssey better then the Japanese ones.

Darth Jello
I'm more concerned about the body mechanics of going from first to third person in rapid succession during boss battles etc. According to the initial impressions, that was the most difficult part of the game.

Ms.Marvel
well.. it worked well enough when you went from first person to third in ball morph mode in Prime

Darth Jello

well.. it worked well enough when you went from first person to third in ball morph mode in Prime The difficulty is that you're holding the remote sideways, like an NES controller but to go third person (the only way to shoot missiles) you have to point it at the screen, thus fundamentally changing your grip and hand positions (unless you're left handed). The easiest way I can think of doing it quickly if you're a righty is to point it at the screen with both hands keeping your right behind your left and sliding back to switch back to normal 3rd person view. Taking off the jacket and playing bare-back may make it easier too.

Ms.Marvel
i get you

Let's face it, that control method just screams 'potential disaster'.

I'll give it a go, though.

I'll give it a go, though. Worst case scenario, nintendo finds an interesting new way to market astroglyde- Controller lube/metroid juice to cut down on friction and wear while flipping the controller around. It worked for guitar picks with gorilla snot...

Ridley_Prime
Better voice this time, I think.

That's some pretty bitchin' news to me. She's one of my three favorite voice actresses (with Tara Strong and Kari Wahlgren).

I suppose really we must give credit for trying something so different.

But every reviewer going must be thinking 'uh-oh' at that First Person mode switch.

Darth Jello
Well, "uh oh" at switching back and forth quickly. I think Samus' new mole is a little too distracting too.

Sin_Volvagia
Why do people keep calling those things moles? It's a birthmark!

Moles are ugly birthmarks that should be removed on sight!

Because in my dream, quickly switching the view added such a level of intensity to the boss battles that it was unreal...

Yes, video games occasionally make an apperance in my dreams... don't judge me... stick out tongue

Actually, since I'm thinking about it, the most interesting game-related dream I ever had was one of the Pokemon Trading Card Game for the Gameboy. And in it you actually had to go catch wild pokemon cards, it was pretty odd...

Every review I've read so far says it works well and is awesome. I personally think I'll like it.

Nemesis X
$10 says that Samus is getting the jiggle feature since Team Ninja is assisting Nintendo with this project.

The Scenario
$10 says Samus isn't, because it's Nintendo.

http://www.metroid-database.com/

And if it's there, I don't see it in the leaked intro to the game.

And if it's there, I don't see it in the leaked intro to the game. Not necessarily. The death animation sprite in Super Metroid actually has a jiggle in it but it's obscured by the fade to white.

Nemesis X
@Scenario

If Nintendo doesn't even want Samus to have jiggle treatment from Team Ninja, they shouldn't have made Samus look hot in the first place.

Team Ninja + hot woman = you know the rest

I've played enough TN games to know what they do with each female character and no, I don't play them for THAT reason, I play them because the action and fighting sequences are jaw dropping.

yea, cuz that's surely what they had in mind when they designed her roll eyes (sarcastic)

Nor did I, though a part of me wouldn't be suprised. But seriously? How long are we expecting Samus to be out of her suit?

And, I have to admit, I am now quite looking forward to this game. Especially since I have been playing Super Metroid again.

Things I'd like to see-
More locations than just the space station
No speed running
Sylux (a resolution to the cliffhanger at the end of Prime 3
Interplanetary travel controls and ship to ship combat

Why not?

And Sylux is overrated.

The Scenario
Well there was that jungle looking area in the gameplay trailer, so more areas are confirmed. Speed Running is more of a fan thing, and it isn't that difficult to get under 2 hours. But yes, I'd also like some resolution and ship combat.

Darth Jello
I've gotta say that so far, especially with Zero Mission, Samus has been unfortunately shown to be a pretty shitty pilot. I mean, she does have a different ship like every other game. I wonder what percentage of her bounty hunting fees go towards insurance.

Ridley_Prime
You raise a good point, although to be fair, Zero Mission was her first mission, and likely became a better pilot by the time of Other M (and the destruction of her ship at the beginning of Fusion was not due to shitty pilot skills, but because she became unconscious after being infected by the X).

Someone talked about speed running, already....

But, are you actually referring to the super speed ability?

The Scenario
But everyone loves the Speed Booster! I just wish it was a little more manueverable. Instant activation might be fun, too.

Ridley_Prime
Instant activation would take away from the challenge in using it to reach certain powerups/expansions though, and would not require any real skill to use.

I'll have it the way it is, thanks.

Darth Jello
I was referring to having to rush through the game to get a good ending and not being able to really enjoy it.
