So here's a story which I'm not sure will even stay up because it does kind of involve emulation but not in any illegal way.

Super Mario Bros. Special, for those who don't know is truly the Lost Levels and the black sheep of the whole series (More so than the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 and not in the Hotel Mario way). Basically, back in 1985, shortly after the original came out, Nintendo had a licensing deal with Hudson to release a couple of games on their console at the time, the PC88. This resulted in three games, two which were remakes of the Mario Bros. arcade game (Mario Bros. Special and Punch Ball Mario Bros.) and one that was an all new original game based on Super Mario Bros. Unfortunately, the hardware limitations of the PC88 made it almost unplayable and most people in the west hadn't even heard of it until a rom recently came out. Now, some of the hackers are remaking the game with the original Super Mario Bros. engine so that it's playable.

Why is this cool? The game is exactly like the original Super Mario Bros. except that it has completely different levels, new items, and new enemies in addition to the old ones, many of them taken from Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. This is also the first game which allows Mario to fly, four years before Super Mario Bros. 3. The levels in the game are so long that there's actually an item that extends your time by 100 seconds.
