Before the events in 2004, the Illuminados performed inhumane experiments on people with Las Plagas and turned them into grotesque monsters.
The reason why one of the creatures is called a Regenerator is because when it loses a limb, it grows back at an insanely rapid rate. The Regenerator has a hairless human-like appearence, has rough grey skin, and their mouths are very large with long needle-like teeth which forces them to make creepy grins.
When in attack mode, the Regenerators are fast. They slash with their claws, they bite, and can stretch their arms to unnatural lengths to grab prey. What's frightening to players is that the Regenerator will randomly run around and knock Leon down with one of its powerful arms and what's also frightening is their theme song when seen.
There are two different ways to kill a Regenerator: You can either waste bullets and keep firing at it endlessly until it's dead or you can attach the thermal scope to your rifle so you can see the leech-like Plagas that's attached to it. When all Plagas on the Regenerator are dead, so will the Regenerator.
Iron Maiden's share the same traits as the Regenerator but with a bigger mouth, more color on it's skin, and has nails and spikes coming out of it which are very dangerous to Leon. Maiden's are also slower than a Regenerator but are faster crawlers and have eyes that are barely visible.
Both these creatures are rare to see in Resident Evil 4 and were voted as one of the most scariest monsters in the game.
