has anyone ever seen any estimates of how many snubfighters the alliance had at the time of ANH? i imagine their forces would only consist of x-wings, y-wings, and z-95 headhunter variants. weren't the a-wing and b-wing added some time around RotJ?

I don't think there's an exact figure for that. All I can ever think of in terms of numbers for the Alliance is on the page at Wookieepedia for the Battle of Endor, and the Truce at Bakura stated 10% of their force lost.

I feel like I read that there were 30 ships at the Battle of Yavin, but no idea about the whole fleet. Don't think it's ever stated.

I don't think that they give fighter counts, just ship counts.

Probably numbered in the ten/hundreds of thousands.
