Anyone picking this up ?? I also found this for 3D fans

The Blu-ray Disc Association has been wrestling with this one for a while, but now it's official. The much awaited 3D specification for Blu-ray discs has been decided on. Most of the information to come out of the announcement is what we expected, but there are a few surprises in there.
The codec being used for 3D video is MVC, an extension of the AVC codec that we're already familiar with. 3D file sizes are about 50% larger on average, which shouldn't be much of a problem for Blu-ray. Thankfully, multiple versions of the same movie won't have to go out, since the MVC encoding is fully backwards compatible to a 2D picture.

3D movies will play without any quality loss in full 1080p. Graphical menus will be fully 3D which is to be expected, but the announcement of 3D subtitles raises a few questions. It will be interesting to see exactly how readable the subtitles are and whether they compliment or hinder the 3D effect.
Playstation 3 owners will be happy to hear that 3D playback will be possible on their game consoles. It's fairly safe to assume that this will be coming in the form of a firmware update in the next few months. There's no word on other older players getting updates at the moment.
The Blu-ray Disc Association also points out that 3D on Blu-ray is 'display agnostic'. That is to say that whether you're watching on an LCD or Plasma, you're going to get the full 3D experience.

Hardly going to be the same as in the cinema. I'll be buying the blu ray as long as both versions are avaliable in the same package.

coolmovies
you mean blu ray and dvd??

MildPossession

Yep nothing beats the big screen even if its blu ray

chomperx9
the 3D tvs are a waste of money at the moment because there still isnt alot of products yet that are compatible with it. and plus to get the 3D image on your tv you gotta wear the glasses just like at the theater

BruceSkywalker
I will be buying a copy or two

SnakeEyes
Didn't like the movie so...... won't be buying.

Kazenji
I will be getting it does'nt really bother me if the 3D is'nt included.

I didn't know that it was glow in the dark.

I read earlier that the 3D version will be out around November time. Don't think I will get another version, the BLURAY 2D version will be fine for me.

MildPossession
It's pointless getting the 3D version unless you have the equipment.

T.M
Agreed and I am not paying to upgrade to 3D to watch at home because I think 3D is all about the experience for the audience and I am not inviting 100 people to my house to watch a movie.

I am still not sold on 3D at home seems kind of pointless to me personally.

MildPossession
Well it makes me ill, so I'm not spending hundreds and hundreds of pounds on something that makes me feel like that.

Saskaswan
Will the Blu-Ray 3D come with the 3D glasses?
Also does the 3D version also have the 2D version on it?

T.M
I doubt the 3D BD will come with the glasses.

There has been no information released about the 3D version as far as I know. Cameron said it would be released around November but the studio said that it wont be.

Looks like I'll just get the Blu-Ray 2D release. I only want it for the extras anyway.

Then you may be disappointed the Blu Ray is apparently going to be bare bones.

So, to be clear, the release for the DVD coming out this week is a bare bones with just the film?

Is the big release in November just stricly a Blu-ray? Or is it a DVD as well?

Depending on the special features involved, I might just get the bare bones disc.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that the Blu-ray edition of James Cameron's Avatar had sold 2.7 million units by Sunday afternoon, thus surpassing in four days the lifetime sales of the previous top-selling Blu-ray, The Dark Knight, which took over a year to sell 2.5 million units. Overall, Avatar has sold 6.7 million copies on packaged media.

MildPossession
So far, it's sold more on DVD in America. The DVD quality after seeing the AMAZING blu ray edition is very very disappointing, people need to leave the dvd alone unless they have an upscaling player to get the best out of this film.

I watched it last week and the visuals on blu ray are stunning.

T.M
I got the Blu Ray/DVD combo on the weekend (with the free t-shirt roll eyes (sarcastic) ) looking forward to seeing how the 2D Blu ray compares to the 3D version.

MildPossession
I got that t-shirt as well lol, it's staying in the bag set, it's not avaliable now with the blu ray.

T.M
I took it out to have a look at it, its in my wardrobe now where I think it will stay. I noticed that they were sold out from the site I ordered it from.

consumers are being told that Blu-ray is the only way to watch James Cameron's blockbuster on a small screen

I just watched the Blu Ray and the picture quality is amazing, I think it is the best quality BD picture I have seen.

MildPossession
All those silly people getting to shops early to queue to buy the blu ray! order online if you can, I got mine through the post nearly a week before the release date here in Britain.

stick out tongue

T.M
Really? wow thats early. I got mine on Saturday so 2 days before release.

coolmovies
I gave in and orderd the combe pack i cant wait eek!

Kazenji
And theres no extra's on the dvd and blue-ray

they had their reasons for it.

MildPossession
Yep, they were straight forward in telling us of no extras on BLU-ray, so I don't see the problem.

T.M
Well I read somewhere that the reason for the Blu-Ray was to have enough space for the best possible transfer of the movie, so to get the best quality picture and audio they could.

The DVD I have no idea why they couldn't put a few extras on though.

queeq
It's extremely crisp. I was afraid it would look like crap on the small screen, as do the commercials on tv. But on Blu Ray it's very nice. And this is coming from a guy who watched Avatar in 3D in IMAX.

Kazenji
So has anyone watched the dvd version yet?

MildPossession
Nope, I'm not wasting my time watching a terrible inferior version when I have the blu ray. I put the dvd in to see and it's like VHS quality compared.

queeq
HEhehe... indeed. Although I must say some DVD's look great in a Blu Ray player.

MildPossession
Oh yes they do, dvds are upscaled in a blu ray so the quality is closer to blu ray quality, but in a non upscaling dvd player, it looks awful.

queeq
There ya go.

MildPossession
I wasn't saying all dvds look bad by the way.

Yeah well not everyone has a Blu-ray player............

Scythe
I have watched the DVD that came in the combo pack. It looked alright, like any other dvd. At times it looked a little fuzzy, but nothing too bad. I enjoyed it.

MildPossession
I was answering your question about what I thought, anyone else wants to watch it on dvd, fair enough.

FistOfThe North
picked this up. the blu ray/dvd combo. i compared the 2 on my pc since it has a dvd rom and a sony blu ray rom. there is a noticable differece but not by a a huge margin. the dvd version seemed a bit lighter and fuzzier but man the blu ray version was so hi def it wasn't funny.

I watched the blu ray on my "46 sony bravia via hdmi and i'll have to say that film the looked better than when i saw it on imax. it's the best looking blu ray film i've ever seen. i don't think films can get more high def or more "blu ray" looking than avatar. my tv's @ 60hrtz though. my friends "46 bravia runs @ 120 hrtz so i wanna see what it looks like on his tv. must look spectacular.

it's probably one of the reasons why it's the best selling blu ray of all time, dethroning , the dark knight. it sold in a week what did what dark knight did in a year, if i remember correctly.

avatar's the type of blu ray that can be turned on and left on merely for the crisp beauty of it. i have the nice 5.1 surr. snd set up that enhanced it all as well.

9/10 on thae blu ray only because they should've included 3d. I'll be getting that version as well.

Clark17
I like the movie, saw it on 3D IMAX, awesome, got the dvd copy also.

I noticed that it came in a uniquely cool packaging, I wonder where I could get those. Need it to replace broken cases.

Sith Master X
Just watched it for the first time a few days ago. Whoa! What a beautiful movie.

FistOfThe North
i think cameron decided to wait to deliver the inevitable "avatar in 3d" because he's waiting for bluray player 3d firmware, or the actual player itself to come out this summer, or fall, i think.

honestly i can't even imagine how good a blu ray avatar in 3d's gonna look like but i bet it'll be mind boggling. orgasmic. i mean just avatar in bluray looks stupid amazing. i've never seen a more hi def film ever. and it's in 2d..

FistOfThe North
Ah ha..!

just found this and it's just as i said. here's a youtube video about what i posted a few moments ago..

i did research on the tech on many sites including youtube right after i posted my last post on this thread, trying to look for an answer and here it is..

A extended version is comming out

MildPossession
Oo yes an extra 8 minutessssss....

T.M

coolmovies

MildPossession
Apparently, it's not worth seeing for the extra footage, part of it is a pointless sex scene(that people have been calling the 'navi porn', or something like that) and nothing of any interest really, an alternative death scene that you can see why it was left out in the original cut, and so on.

Basically, don't waste your money going to see it at the cinema again or buy the extended dvd/blu ray...

T.M
Empire gave it a 5* review

Review

Verdict
Worth watching for fans, completists and anyone who missed it on the big screen first time around - but it won't win over any haters.

Still wont go see it.

MildPossession
They gave five stars to the original cut of the film, so not surprising really.

K.Diddy
no expression I will not be paying to see it again at the cinema,I think it's ****ing greedy,I mean, surely they made enough money off the first version then to try milking us more to pay again too see and extended cut of it.

smokin' **** that

MildPossession
And extended scenes that don't add anything of importance.

what about the extres

smile Exactly,Then they will bring out an ''Extended cut'' on dvd to make us pay more again,I liked the movie, but I can live without seeing these extended scenes.

Kazenji
Good thing i have'nt brought the dvd.

MildPossession
K.Diddy - You can always rent the extended edition if you want to check it out instead of paying more for the dvd own or cinema.

Yes. You get loads of special features, including alternate cuts and behind the scenes footage, and interviews. Or you can stick with your original DVD or Blu-ray, which just has the movie.

But again, you should know all this since you have been updating the thread with the information.
