Myth
I guess my other thread about this got shut down and I don't know why. Well anyway, it will be released in American theaters in April. I already have it on DVD and all I can say is go see it. It has great comedy and great action. Think Looney Toons meets Jet Li meets Matrix Reloaded. This movie has broke many of the major box office records in China already. Thoughts?

Cinemaddiction
It was moved to the DVD section, under "Last DVD You Bought", just as an FYI. I had planned on seein' it in theatres. "Shaolin Soccer" is one of my personal favorite movies.

Silver Stardust
I saw half of this...and OMG, it is awesome...so funny. I will definitely be seeing it when it gets to theaters here.

forumcrew
this movie is amazing.. i just saw it about a week ago and loved it

wuTa
where would you get the dvd?

MildPossession
I have had it on uncut dvd for a few weeks now, and I absolutely love it. I don't know about America, but mine is a region 3 dvd from Hong Kong.

forumcrew
im in the US and i got it online

Myth
Mines Region 1

xmit2005
I saw this at a screening. Not sure if it was the final draft but it was fantastic. There are cg in almost every shot, so it gets tiresome, but if you like shaolin, I think this will appeal. Also, the film makes nods to so many films I can't even remember. The outfits of the Axe Gang are awesome and there's a funny ... moment when a character speaks in English. Really bizarre actually since you don't even realize it! I saw a trailer for the film yesterday and I'm not sure if the trailer and film match up, so may be what I saw was an early cut. No matter what, it looked good.

MildPossession
I was thinking Kill Bill Vol.1 in some certain scenes.

Ou Be Low hoo
The 'Kill Bill' references were intentional...Stephen Chow likes to reference other movies.

Kung Fu Hustle is a fun movie...

MildPossession
I know.

Darth_Big_Boy
Saw the ad for this in a magazine I looked at not too long ago. I wanna see it too.

Cinemaddiction
Yeah, I was reading the Hunter S. Thompson issue of "Rolling Stone" yesterday and caught the ad. Ebert said something along the lines of it being like if Bugs Bunny and something met something and was directed by Tarantino.

Anywho, like I said, "Shaolin Soccer" was gold, and I'll see this too. Is it a Miramax distributed film as well, or has this not been shelved for 10 years yet?
stick out tongue

Holcomb
The trailer is great, I want to see this.

So yall would recommend Shaolin Soccer?

Cinemaddiction
Very much so. It'll give you an idea of how Chow likes to throw around insane CGI. Insane that it's used in the most peculiar ways, i.e. Team Evil's Tornado Kick..where the kicker has a cloud of black smoke form behind him, with the face of a demon, and the goalies jersey getting shredded from forcing the ball away.

Holcomb
That sounds good. I'll have to check it out. Sounds very interesting.

Holcomb
bump to share this review I came across.

God of Cookery
King of Comedy
King of Destruction
From Beijing With Love
Forbidden City Cop

Those are what he has directed, he has acted in a load more. King of Comedy and God of Cookery are worth the look if you are a fan.

Awesome, thanks for that list. I'll have to check some of those out while I'm waiting for hustle.

Anyone else notice that it's been getting really good reviews?

TheFilmProphet
I recently saw this film and it was amazing. It balanced the comedy and action very well and its definitely something new for any and all filmgoers. I would overwhelmingly recommend watching this film.

BakaXero
nothing new to asain cinema except enjoyment of lame comical storyline wihich you cannot help laugh at its stupidity

Glad to hear, I'll probably be seeing it this weekend when it opens wide.

Were there any actors that stood out for you?

TheFilmProphet
The young actress Shengyi Huang (Chow's love interest) stood out for me, she seems to have alot of potential as an actress. A bit of a spoiler, but she displayed plenty of emotion during the film without ever saying a single word playing a woman who was hearing impaired.

Holcomb
That's good to know, I'll keep an eye out for her.

Was she a Bond girl in some James Bond movie?

TheFilmProphet
Nope, I think your probably thinking of Michelle Yeoh who co-starred in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) with Pierce Brosnan. Shengyi Huang was only about 15 years old at the time of its release.

ZomBiE_HunTER
What language do they speak in the US release.

I highly doubt that anyone else in Asian cinema is churning out insane films like Stephen Chow.

No offense, but I don't know where you're coming from with this. She had about 4 minutes combined screentime, most of which she eiter cried, ran, or used sign language. You can't base someones entire future off of such a short performance.

Mandarin w/ English subtitles.

The film was hokey, burly, stupid, action packed, fast paced, engaging..so, in other words, I thought it was perfect. yes
Stephen Chow should consider releasing some of his older stuff after he sees how well KFH does in the U.S. I was glad to see Brother # 6 from "Shaolin Soccer" back at Chow's side.

whay i meant was steven chow movies... i know asian cinema its not all like that. i guess what i said came out wrong. i watch asain movies every second i get. what im saying is its nothing new, since his over does it. in alot of his movies. many of them have the same basic ideas. but theyre still enjoyable and good to watch.

Ou Be Low hoo
Stephen Chow rocks the tofu! He's made some excellent movies...Let's hope he doesn't get kidnapped by Hollyshit and made to make 'Shanghai Hong-Kong-Fu Knights' or something equally as bird flu poo...

Actually saw this last night. Great flick, and there actually is a Bond tie-in. The landlady was actually uncredited in The Man with the Golden Gun back in 1974. Not what you were referring to, I know... but thought I'd pop back on line to contribute once again smile

Indeed I do, Cory! Those home imporvement projects take a hell of a lot of time... and my laundry list of films to watch during that has grown hopelessly out of control. Time to get back into the swing of things. I think this weekend's Hustle/Interpreter two-fer is the first time I've pulled that in a couple years. Not a bad combo, either.... although Interpreter could have been a little quicker paced.

Glad to be missed smile

Cinemaddiction
Yeah, both "House of Flying Daggers" and "Kung Fu Hustle" were being hyped and I got to wondering where you and Shaolin Monk were hiding. Don't be scarce, man. You need a new sig, too. yes

Primitive Screwhead
Yeah, tell me about it. Might keep with the theme, and look for some Hustle images. Or maybe Flying Dagger ones... picked that one up on Friday as well. Nothing like a little foreign cinema to drag me out of hiding...

Myth
Just a note here: Movies like this should be allowed to stay in the normal movie section because Kung Fu Hustle is released all around the world and will be seen by people other than just fans of foreign films. Not to mention, this is the internet, foreign is different depending on where you live.

Cinemaddiction
It's a foreign language film, so, it's going to stay here.

We'll yeah but.. what is ment by foriegn films is if its not a westernized movie then this is where its belongs. hmm... maybe we should get the title of this movie to be changed to cult (culture) movies... then maybe there be no complaints erm

I agree 100%. Films like Kung Fu Hustle and Night Watch shouldn't be in this section. They are international movies.

Fearnix
i saw this film a few weeks ago. i love SC as an director/actor
the film is so funny 10/10

dark1365
I saw the movie. It was pretty good. Plot was strange though, but the spec effects are worth all the money.

BakaXero
Well if you've seen the other movies Steven Chow is in, you'd understand that most of his movies have pointless ideas in the plot... it only ment to entertain not make sense stick out tongue

WillKempsgirl
Does anyone know whyit's rated "R"?

MildPossession
Rated R for sequences of strong stylized action and violence

It also has more than one F*** in, so it will not get a 12 rating here in England anyway. Well the subtitles I read did.

Thank u

BakaXero
i heard theyre making a sequeal to this

MildPossession
They are indeed, can't wait. Apparently they are going to start filming it in September and it will contain more action sequences than the first one.

Cinemaddiction
I wish more of Chow's older releases would get put on DVD, not necessarily theatrical releases.

BakaXero
but i heard that an actress in it may not be returning... i think it was the love interest...

my brother found a Steven Chow box set at the markets. too bad he couldnt afford it sad

MildPossession
Yeah that is right BakaXero, not decided yet though, but it will probably end up with her not returning.

BakaXero
something about her leaving the agency.
but i think she has a role coming up in some other movie
i might be wrong but if my memory is correct its a movie adaptation of some comic. again im not sure if im mixing up what i read, hopefully im right stick out tongue

Fanboy
I liked Kung-Fu hustle it is a great movie but most of the ideas were taken from other old t.v shoes. One I remember Lions roar taken from The new Dragon Sabre and Heavenly sword. 2 toad style taken from Return of the condor heroes. That instrument of death thing was stolen from another movie but I forgot wich one it looked bad a-- though. That is all I can remember so if any of you guys can name anything that you found amazing from Kung-fu hustle I can probably name where Stephen Chow stole it from.

BakaXero
not like i didnt know..
steven show does that in many movies
in fact alot of other movies do it too.
no point complain since it was made for pure entertainment purpose and nothing more. but if you want to make a list heres one, the Buddha palm was from Iron Monkey

Fanboy
Cool dude.

Fanboy
I also remember seeing axe gang on Drunken master 2 or Legend of drunken master as it was released in america.

Fanboy
They did not get Budha palm from Iron Monkey. Iron Monkey actually had poison Budha palm. ZING.

BakaXero
buddha palm erm
poisone buddha palm
same thing the idea is it left an imprint, i remember it as subs when i watched it ages ago not the subs that came with the tarantino name. before that which was ages ago

Kupotek
I took screenies from the movie and made a media page on my site with it's review... if you'd like to see that media page

Kupotek
I made a media page with screenies I took from the movie so I hope you enjoy smile Site wont let me post links, so goto my page, click on Reviews, and find it under K on the left smile

Fanboy
Wow I did not see any pics.

indie_director
I just finished watching this movie. It's absolutely hilarious! I want to see so much more from Chow... especially a sequel. Has anyone seen Shaolin Soccer? I haven't and want to know if it's worth renting.

MildPossession
Of course it is worth renting! Kung Fu Hustle I prefer, but Soccer is still good.

Fanboy
I just posted in the Iron Monkey and Martial arts films forum and people might be shocked that I might know more about martial arts films then everyone else in this forum.

Shaolin Soccer's better than Hustle, IMO. Funny too.

"Get a goal, Iron Shirt!"
Iron Shirt(who possesses the unique ability to nestle the ball in his stomach without it falling off) runs into the goal with about three people clinging to him.

laughing out loud Good times.

Wolfie
I've been meaning to see Shaolin Soccer because I just loved Kung Fu Hustle.

Best line: "You may know Kung Fu, but you're still a fairy!"

lilmisskitten
It was such an awesome film i watched it yesterday and found the pure unreality of it made it realistic in someway for me ....it was so cool ....he looked better before he shaved..........i like the running like roadrunner parts....*sigh* ...SO cool, I'm defiantly gonna watch shaolin soccer ..

Tiptoegecko
ahh man this was one of the best movies. I dont remember laughing that much since I saw Shaun of the Dead

Fanboy
Oh ya know another thing they stole from old movies was that thing the old Lion Roar woman was in that car doing that thing with her hands that was from an old Bruce Lee movie.

Wolfie

I agree. But the clean-shaven look was symbolic for his leaving behind being the villain and becoming the One.

DarkC
Shaolin Soccer is better, IMO...

Fanboy
Here is another thing they stole that musical instrument of death was stolen from this thing that happened in New Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre.

snake_eyes616
I love this movie. Espeacially when he is on the trolly and he gets his ass kicked by the four-eyes, lol funny stuff laughing out loud

DarkC
Banshee lady armed with the bell......good times.

Have you guys seen the trailer for Shaolin Soccer?

Celestialgirl
I saw a preview for it on the movie network and decided to rent it. My sister isn't really into martial art movies but I blackmailed her into watching it with me and now we can't stop talking about it. It was so hilarious!

mattador
Just rented Shaolin Soccer last week. Very funny. On par with KF Hustle big grin

eleveninches
KF hustle was F-ing AWESOME! I got the DVD for christmas, and its such a great film

Lord Shadow Z
It was an enjoyable film but it didn't get me laughing too much-just now and again. My favourite part was the battle with the musician/assassin guys, so stylishly done.

Scarecrow756
I watched Kung Fu Hustle last night and it was absolutely cool and funny, my favourite scene was also the battle with the musician/ assassin guys.

hamstein
Awesome film! I loved the women who was angry cz no one paid her rent laughing

fionalin7
i heard there doing another film like kung fu hustle.. the movie was so funny. specially the scene where they were running.. hahahaha

Solo
I remember not liking it much.

Kryzula
I thought Shaolin Soccer was better.

Stephen Chow is a funny guy... he's cute too.

Both were great. Flirting Scholar is good too. In fact I'd say so far I have yet to find a Stephen Chow movie I dislike.

Basically anything pre-saint of gamblers was imo pretty tacky. Have you seen "curry and pepper", and "my hero?". Not that great.
After 1991, Chow pulled out some really crazily entertaining films.

From beijing with love, god of cookery, into the dark, ..etc

lilylidou
Steven Chow is my best love star,
I have see almost his film .
