I saw it as a kid, but I can't remember it. It is about a boy and his family who trek through the french countryside to get to their summer retreat. I remember they had to sneak by some mansions and the father had glasses and black hair. I think the boy met a rich girl who played the piano. Any takers? thanks!

FINALLY figured this out. It's "My Father's Glory". I can't yet post links so just imdb the title. It's clearly what you're talking about.
