Who can beat Yang Wenli?

Nephthys
Yang Wenli is one of the two protagonists of the 110 episode anime epic Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Yang is a soldier in the Alliance fleet who through his genius swiftly rises through the ranks to become a celebrated hero (Miracle Yang) and central galactic figure. He is in my opinion the greatest tactician in the show and probably the greatest in any work I have come across.

Now to test that.

Pit any character in fiction or real life against Yang in a tactical battle to see which is supreme.

Rules:

Characters will be given fleets or armies of equal strength to Yangs in manpower and talent.

The characters can use only their wits and command ability in the fight. No superhuman abilities can be used. No unnatural advantage can be had. This is a battle of strategy, not sorcery.

Info on Yang:

Yang Wenli is basically the military version of L from Death Note. He is able to predict peoples moves before they occur on very little information, he can instantly see through his opponents strategy and is able to select the best decision he can make and act on it decisively. He is able to trick or trap his opponents with little effort. He can ingeniously make use of the environment for his strategies.

Yang has taken an impenetrable fortress without losing a single soldier. The same fortress which repelled 6 previous invasions with little effort.

Yang has taken on multiple fleets at once equally, with a fleet the same size as any one of his opponents fleets. An early battle has him fight 2 fleets and still be capable of taking out a third when it makes a tactical blunder. And one point he is able to fight 8 fleets simultaneously and still manage to break through their lines and escape.

He predicts basically every strategy people in the show attempt, except for ones where he has no information on the matter.

I can't recall a single time when Yang has failed in his objective, whether that be to flee or fight.

Utrigita
Commander of the first invasion fleet from the Loortech Race.

A telepath couldn't predict what moves he was going to make. So I wish Yang luck and look forward to a epic battle smile

ArtificialGlory
A Mind.

Nephthys
I've never heard about either of those guys. When I search for the first one all I get is a bunch of german. :T

Any more info on them?

Minds are sentient, uber-AIs with insane cognitive abilities among many other things.

Nephthys
That counts as superhuman and a unnatural advantage. http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-colbert.gif

If they have above human abilities they're exempt.

Oh, right. I somehow got the impression that the opponent is simply not allowed to directly interfere.

Nephthys
I don't see the point of having characters who are going to win through natural advantages. Otherwise you might as well just say "God".

The thread is purely about tactical ability.

CosmicComet
Sounds chinese.

Which means he's fair game for Lu Bu.

Lu Bu would beat him.

Nephthys
I dunno about his nationality actually. he sounds chinese but he looks like this:

CosmicComet
That looks Chinese enough for an anime.

Q99
He is impressive, better than, say, Thrawn from Star Wars.

Though, he did lose the war in the end. Largely due to behind-the-scenes politics and such, but still, that's how to beat him- strategically/logistically.

Btw, they're from the Culture series, which is really good.

Yeah, thats always been the problem for him. He hates being a soldier, doesn't want power and completely believes in democracy. His unwillingness to take charge of the Alliance severely dicks him over when the corrupt morons of the Alliance make borderline insane decisions. Meanwhile Reinhard isn't as good tactically as him, but since he amasses power he's always able to make good decisions that benefit the Empire and give him the vast strategic advantage. I'm re-watching and I just got to the part where Yang lampshades this.

However, despite this Yang still technically won the war at one point. Or he would have if Trunht wasn't such a sociopath.

Maybe I'll look into that.

I would also be rather surprised if you had read a danish novel, about a hostile invasion force that serves as a galactic police patrol.

Anyways the Commander (I can't recall his name, been years since I read it) is a member of the Loortech Race that have mutated, enabling his mind to simultaniously run hundreds of different scenarios at the same time, making his next move impossible to determind. Based on your description I see them as being very similar, which is why I think it would be a epic battle.

Q99
Some of the admirals from Banner of the Stars might do well. Admiral Abriel is good tactically and strategically.

AuraAngel
Do the characters get any prep time?
