When I popped in to see my family the other day, my dads cousin had been to see him and she'd got loads of copies of family history because she's investigating our family tree.

It was quite interesting reading about it all and especially to find our name had changed not 4 generations ago. This was put down to the low literacy levels at the time.

The most interesting part was reading about how my great, great, great, great grandfather and his family had drowned while emigrating to New Zealand.

The funny part came from a newspaper report about the family and a testomony from thier last employer in the UK.....

"The last employer of the family was a Mr.Smith and the family had been working in his mill before they left for New Zealand, 'I'm not suprised at all, the entire family were feckless', he said."

Great, I come from a long line of idiots. sad

Catch 22
Anyone interested in their family tree might wanna try out http://www.genesconnected.co.uk .

The site is by the same people who run http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk .

Fitch
I'll check it.but first I have to find out my family tree....

Catch 22
That's the beauty. You start with yourself and the people you know. Mums, Dads, sisters, etc and then you can save it with a logon. Then, when you find some more info you can go back and add it in.

It's all free, unless you want to try and contact other people registered on the site, who you find using their search engine, to see if they're related to you.

You search on names and it matches up on names, place of birth and date of birth.

Julie
yeah I don't understand....

Smiths huh?..explains a bit. big grin J/K

mechmoggy
I'd love a regular surname like "Smith", mine is strange.

Dim
My paternal grandmother was a Smith...the whole family was a bit melodramtic and loopy.

Was Smith the old family name?

mechmoggy
No, Smith was the name of the mill owner that made the comment about my feckless family.

My surname is waaaaaaaaay stranger than that.

Dim
BOOOOO...I hope I'm not related to that jerk!!

mechmoggy

mechmoggy
It seems my dads grear grandfather did pretty well for himself, he was one of the first to read and write in our family (no small thing in those days) and worked for a company called Norwest. Got pretty high up there apparently.

Dim
Sounds down right civilized..

mechmoggy
He must have been the black sheep of the family then. big grin

I know my grandfather was a chef in the navy and when my brother left school he trained as a chef too. My old man is an engineer and I followed in his foot steps.

What about you Dim, have you followed in anyone's foot steps?
