The blade of a lightsaber is pure plasma energy emitted from the hilt and suspended in a force containment field. The field contains the immense heat of the plasma and allows the blade to keep its shape. The heat of the blade only 'activates' when the containment field is breached via coming in contact with solid matter (that's why Jedi/Sith don't melt when they turn their sabers on.)
