Misconceptions about character development.

The basic rule of screenwriting is that every line of dialogue, every scene, and every bit of action (if that's relevant) should add to character, plot, or ideally both. These sorts of things add to character by revealing things about them: not just exposition, but how stress makes them behave.

It's possible to have interesting characters who are underdeveloped. I loved INCEPTION, but you can't really tell me anything about most of those characters beyond their one-sentence summary. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a Trusty Sidekick. Ellen Page is a prodigy, and the Conscience of the Group. What else is there to them? Nothing, beyond what charisma their actors lend to the parts.
