Swearing: Is it wrong?

Shit, Fvck, Damn, Hell, Bastard.... The list goes on. Is it a 'sin' to use these words? If so, is it only a matter of context? Are certain words only considered profanity because you were raised to believe they were (i.e. stupid)? Thoughts please.
Quiero Mota
If you use God's name in vain it is. If you're a Buddhist, Right Speech is part of the Noble Eightfold Path.
So it depends what you believe. Hindus by and large have no prohibition of cursing.
Lord Lucien
Swearing's fine. But cursing is a hell-worthy sin.
The MISTER
I'd say it's a matter of context especially considering the fact that we have so many different languages on earth. I heard that in Japan there are no "official" curse words. Does anyone know if that's true?
Deja~vu
The intent of your words that cause a negative feeling are all wrong. It may not be a sin, but it causes harm. Your projection of your negativity on others doesn't lift them up, but tears them down, then that is passed around causing everyone to eat sh$t soup for the day.
The Nuul
Each to their own.

A certain type of swearing called "blasphemy" is wrong... using God's name in vain, disrespecting sacred/holy concepts and/or personages.... this is wrong.
The other kind of swearing (sh*t, @ss, f*ck, etc.) is not morally wrong, and is only a mild social taboo no more serious than eating with your elbows on the table or with your mouth open.
ADarksideJedi
It is supose to be consider a sin but alot of people swear like sailors so there is no way why people would stop swearing anyway.
Deja~vu
I've known very conservatives that won't say certian words stating that it is a cheating way with the same intentions of the real words. Some examples would be:
Darn = damn
Heck = Hell
Shoot = Shit
Gosh Darn = God Damn
Cheese and Rice = Jesus Christ
Chuck You = Fu@k You
These people aren't any fun at parties. lol
MRasheed
"Cheese and Rice?" lol
Deja~vu
Cheese and Rice!! I'm hungry!

Black bolt z
People decide what words are bad.
If I raised by child and told him to use the work F*ck for please and please for F*ck then he would think please is a bad word and would be asking if he could f*ck have some cookies.
If you don't dictate it is wrong it is not wrong.
And AFAIK there is nothing in the bible about not being able to say certain words whether it be swearing or cursing.
Deja~vu
Yeah, it's the intent of it. I could call you a "Sweet little lady," and say it with such disdain or even not. It's all in my intention.
Words are only that. I believe when the bibles talk about hurtful words such as the ones mentioned, they would mean nothing if there wasn't the intentions/feelings behind them. It's all in the perception of the reciever.

Actually thats how blasphemy is seen too...
Only the religious take issue with it.
The name God is a name we gave to a long-time-ago-theoretical being.
This god- should it exist - is probably a big boy who can take a few words being said about it without tears and tantrums.
Bouboumaster
Those "cursing" are lightweight when you compare them to what "we" use in Quebec.
Our mains swearing/cursing words are taken straight from the church itself.
Tabernacle (it's the same in french) become "Tabarnak". It's the supreme cursing word in Quebec.
Christ become "Criss"
Sacramental bread --> In french we name that Hostie, become "Osti"
And so on.
Is it bad? Yeah, probably. But what a relief! Those words are the best cure to a case of "D'oh, I just hit my thumb with the hammer!".

I never heard that before but then again I never put God's name in vain and when I was younger I would get soap in my mouth for saying any kind of swear.

I think the only problem that swearing really brings is how it makes you look, in the sense that, from a Christian standpoint, you are suppose to be an example to others.
If you claim to be a Christian, yet walk around spewing profanity every chance you get, you aren't making Christians look very good.
Like if a preacher came up to me and invited me to his "F#cking awesome church, cuz all the rest are sh#t." Parents are probably going to keep their kids away from that place. I know I wouldn't go.
(Well, I might just to see what a sermon was like.

Unfortunately, some religions like to apply human frailties to the supreme-being.
To think that the master of all, the creator of time and space would have the shortcomings of a spoiled teenage girl, absurd.

Yet this person actually typed out a list of words that were not swear words that he suggested we shouldn't say. lol I was left feeling, "Wow, are you strict with your life." lol

It's basic respect to the Lord of the Universe. Should be a no-brainer unless the blasphemer is the type of person who curses his/her parents out to their face.

Most of them I consider swears but if they are said differenly I am not sure.LOL

Honestly the only reason swearing is wrong is the feeling you cause in others, and yourself when you use profane language. Or expression of hatred and such. Obviously a lot of this is dependent on what you are thinking when you swear, so it really has little to do with the actual words, BUT I have noticed that when I swear less I don't feel as angry about things. I think knowing that what you are saying is not accepted, then you feel...rebellious? and you might subconsciously hate yourself for it, which makes you feel bad, or whatever.
ADarksideJedi
It makes me feel like that. That is why I advoid it.

it's one of those things where it has to be considered 'wrong' in order to make it appealing in the first place.

Very true and that is how I was bought up.Acourse if I swore as a kid I would get soap in my mouth and that stopped me real quick from saying any more curse words after that.

I Swear means it's true and/or you'll do whatever you swear to. f you didnt do it or you lie then its a sin

The only curses that are invariably unforgivable are Crucio, imperio, and Avada Kedavra.

Well the Bible does instruct believers to refrain from allowing any CORRUPT word to proceed out of our mouths.
Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

And unfortunately "corrupt" is itself has a pretty vague meaning. It's usually used to described tanglible things or organizations...not words.

As I know it, it is considered disrespectful to use the name of God as slang of any kind.

I think you're thinking of the wrong swearing here. This thread is about curse words, like the examples given at the start.
Not swearing like, "I swear to tell the truth."

No. Swearing isn't wrong. I shout out "Oh my god!" but I do not have the INTENT of "saying the lord's name in vain." That's probably because I'm not a Christian, but I used to say this when I considered myself a Christian. There must be intent of offense behind words in order for them to be offensive.
Symmetric Chaos
What does "in vain" even mean in the context of swearing? Trying "in vain" to make a sandwich means trying without hope of success. That's the only other context I know the phrase from.

I'm pretty sure it's the other kind of vanity - the pride one? Like, do not say it if you're trying to name drop, or more don't say it as if you're using god's all-powerful name as if it was any other word, just because you can, and all that.

I wonder if Usher's hit song "OMG" would be considered taking the Lord's name in vain...

It means the same thing, actually. Because the person is invoking the Lord's name in a fruitless manner for a mundane situation.
in vain = doomed situation
Lord's name in vain = he will ignore your invocation (ie: same difference)

Wait... If you didn't intend to say the Lords name in vain, then what did you intend to do by saying the Lords name in vain?
That's like saying "F#@k" and then saying "No worries, I didn't intend to curse."
ADarksideJedi
I really don't see why swearing is even done. There is no point.
