It's a great so-bad it's good 1980 horror sci-fi action thriller from Italy/Mexico/Spain and the director of "Cannibal Ferox" Umberto Lenzi about a radioactive spill on a airplane that turns the passengers into fast-moving, running blood-sucking, weapon-weilding radioactive mutant vampire-like zombie creatures that cause mayhem in a big city and can only be defeated if shot in the head.

It's got gore, exploding heads, cool running zombies, nudity, breast violence ( a trademark for Lenzi), action, explosions and anything you wish for in a cool zombie flick, a must see!

Similar movies recommended: " 28 Days Later" ( a movie obvisily inspired by this movie), " Hell of the Living Dead" ( a.k.a. Night of the Zombies, Zombie Creeping Flesh), " Dawn of the Dead ( 1978 and 2004 versions)", " Day of the Dead", "Resident Evil", " Resident Evil Apocalypse", " Lifeforce", " Scanners", " Final Destination 1 & 2", " Night of the Living Dead ( 1968 and 1990)", " The Rock", " Dead Heat ( 1988)", " Die Hard", " Lethal Weapon", " City of the Living Dead ( a.k.a. The Gates of Hell)", " Return of the Living Dead", "Return of the Living Dead part II", "Return of the Living Dead 3", " The Stuff", " Shaun of the Dead" and " The Beyond" ( a.k.a. Seven Doors of Death).

I always got this confused with City of the Living Dead, which I own. The names are eerily similar.

That movie was hilarious at times. Where else can you see a public access aerobics TV show get overrun by zombies that look like they just slapped oatmeal on their faces!

There is one scene where a girl literally has her nipple cut off, the entire thing, areola and all.

The premise for the movie, where it was seemingly just a dream, then became a reality was brilliant.

EDIT: Here's one of the infamous oatmeal zombies.

Do you think " 28 Days Later" and " Dawn of the Dead" ( 2004 remake) took the idea of running zombies from this movie?

Cinemaddiction
Well, like "28 Days Later" the zombies in "City" aren't zombies either, technically. Just cannibals.

Just an FYI, for what it's worth, there were running zombies in "ROTLD" and I *think* Tobe Hooper's "Lifeforce", though those were kind of vampyre zombie type beings like in "COWD".

But, to answer your question, I'd say that 2004's "Dawn of the Dead" took the "running zombies are just as spooky" idea from "28 Days Later". The "zombies" in "City" may in fact been the genesis of the mobile undead.

yeah... i always figured dawn of the dead copied the zombies from 28dl, they seemed to have to close a release date to be otherwise

i didnt like nightmare city...the zombies looked crap and plus the film was borin

BREN
i agree with ya dean not the best zombie movie, the gore is ok but looks like dean said fake, always reminds me of zombie creeping flesh aka, night of the zombies, hell of the living dead.(which is gorier)
lenzi should stick to cannibal films,LOL
fulcis gates of hell aka, city of the living dead is a much better movie than nightmare city in my opinion, especially john morghen(Giovanni Lombardo Radice) meeting the drill, lol and the nice puking of the guts memorable stuff
nothing is memeorable in nightmare city except ther pathetic running zombies(just my view, sorry if u dont agree smile)

Great work by Lenzi. One of my favorites of the zombie genre. Despite some recycle scenes of gore from Ferox girl gets her breast cut off and then there is the eye poking with a knife.
this is a fun entertaining movie. For me the best scene in the movie was the operating room. A little overdone, but quite funny.

Absolutely loved this film and it's one of my favorites. Very relentless and scary at times.
They weren't zombies but radiation infected people who were organised and cruel. Which is why the film actually looked like a nightmare at times.

Lenzi was cool.
