Here's what I thought about each entry in the NOES series and what grade they would get...
1. Nightmare 1 - The best in the series!!! Without a doubt. A new sinister villain with a horrific and terrifying twist. A nice turn away from the "slasher" formula and trend. After Halloween and Friday the 13th came out, everyone and their brother came out with a copy cat movie. The scariest entry in the series. The first Nightmare movie I ever seen was this one. In fact, the first scene I ever saw was the part when Freddy is on top of Tina and she tears his face off to reveal a laughing skeleton face. This horrifying scene still stays with me to this day. There's just something about Freddy in this one; his make-up especially. His face really does look burnt. I thought his make-up got faker looking as the series went on but in this one, his makeup is truly scary. (A+)
2. Nightmare 2 - Yeah, I know that this entry is looked down upon by fans, but I liked the second one...for several reasons. For one, Freddy is still really scary in this one. I always thought the more you saw of Freddy and the more he talked, the less scarier he is. In this entry, they keep Freddy in the shadows so you don't see him really good and he still doesn't talk that much. This was before Freddy really caught on and he didn't crack that many wisecracks and when he did talk, it was scary. "You are all my children now!!" Love that line...While this one didn't deal with the nightmare aspect of it as much as the others, the opening scene with the rocking bus makes up for it. That scene is right out of a horrifying nightmare. I liked that they found Nancy's diary to link the two together also. I like the fact Freddy can possess people too; not just haunt your dreams...he is after all a dream demon and demons can possess people. The only thing I can say negative about this one was that I felt the ending was a little weak... (B+)
3. Nightmare 3 - A favorite of mine in the series. Considered by many to be the best in the series and the definative Freddy. I loved the back story about Freddy and the whole "bastard son of a hundred maniacs" and "nun as a mother" idea. The return of Nancy was a welcomed touch and was nice to see her again. Another thing I really loved about this one was the ending. Freddy disguising himself as Nancy's father was devilishly clever. Too bad she died though because I really liked her character. I always felt they could've done more with her in another entry but oh, well...but on the downside, this entry was the one that started the wisecracking Freddy and he started to lose that frightening image that he had in the first two. I didn't take his character as serious with this one but still a strong entry in the series...! (A)
4. Nightmare 4 - To be honest, I have probably seen this one more than any other in the series. This WAS my favorite when I was a teenager and although I still really like this one, it's probably not my favorite now. I prefer Patricia Arquette as Kristen, but I thought Tuesday Knight did an excellent job filling her shoes. The best part about this entry was without a doubt Alice. THE dream master...I like her character more than Nancy and always felt she was the anti-Freddy. The keeper of the positive gate vs. the keeper of the negative gate of the realm of dreams...(remember Robert Shaye's history lesson in the movie as the teacher?) and neither could truly destroy the other. The ending was awesome and the special effects were top-notch. The best Freddy death in the whole series. I liked the fact that Freddy got destroyed in the end. In the previous ones, he sort of just *POOFED* and disappeared. But not in this one! Alice tore him a new one and finally laid the smack down. This was Freddy at his prime you could say...I liked the cockroach death scene too but my favorite death scene in this one was the "wanna suck face?" scene...Freddy is a master at manipulating your worst fears and playing on them...this scene along with the roach motel are great examples of that...the only negative thing I can say about it was..."flaming dog urine?!?!? Huh?!", but then again, since when do dreams make sense in the first place? I would've liked to see Freddy come back with a little more imagination. Still, another strong and favorite entry in the series.. (A-)
5. Nightmare 5 - Oh boy, this is where we start to go downhill. Although I loved seeing Alice again, I felt she wasn't as tough in this one. Freddy was waaaaay too funny and wisecracking and by this point, not scary at all. I too felt the story was slowmoving and boring at times but I do like the idea behind it. (Freddy coming back using Jacob's dreams). I didn't like the ending as well as the others but I felt this one was a little darker than the last two. My favorite death scene was Greta's. Bon appetite...*****!!! Loved that one. It was cool seeing Robert Englund as one of the crazy inmates at the asylum. I also liked the first scene with Krueger when his mother appeared and told him she must destroy him because his birth was an abomination. I actually liked this scene more than any other in the movie... All in all, an o.k. entry in the series! (C)
6. Freddy's Dead - Ugh!! This entry sucked! For lots and lots of reasons...Let's just put it this way, the only thing I liked about this one was seeing Freddy's past in flashbacks and Alice Cooper as one of his foster dads. Now, that was cool...but the rest of the movie sucked royally. Especially casting Roseanne and Tom Arnold in a horror movie. Who was the genius that approved this? Freddy is a joke in this one and the death scenes (especially Spencer's) are stupid and done badly...very badly. (Playing Nintendo...please!) Probably my least favorite in the series. I thought there were a lot of flaws and plot holes in this one but I won't get into that because that would take up a lot of space and time but you probably already know what they are. The ending sucked...totally unimaginative and lack of creativity. Could've been a WHOLE LOT better all around...!!! (D)... and that's being generous!
7. New Nightmare - I hated this one and liked this one at the same time. I liked that they tried (with an emphasis on tried) to do something different with the series and try new ideas but still found myself bored and rolling my eyes with this one. I like the fact Krueger is darker and more menacing. I like that he isn't cracking one-liners and wise cracks at every turn but by the end of the movie I was scratching my head saying "Huh?" I don't like the fact that the Freddy in this one isn't the Freddy we all know and love. Instead he's some ancient demon that lives in a movie world and can enter our world (while taking on the persona of Freddy from the movies) if another movie isn't made about him...what?!? I thought the ending was stupid and was disappointed with it...and could Dillon be more annoying??? I think not! (C-)
8. Freddy vs. Jason - Oh hell yeah!!! Krueger is back (the REAL Krueger) and up to his sinister ways again. I had been waiting to see this movie since Junior High and it was well worth the wait. I was blown away and went twice to see it in the theater. I loved everything about it except two things. The fact the Kelly Rowland was in it (she single-handedly almost ruined the movie-ugh!) and the fact the Jason has a fear of water?!? Since when? I can name five times right off the bat when Jason had to go in the water to get a victim and wasn't the least bit scared to do so. Part 1,4,6,7,and 8 all had scenes with Jason in the water. I guess they had to compensate with Freddy's fear of fire with something...Oh, another thing I was disappointed with was no Kane Hodder. In my opinion, he will always be Jason Voorhees and nobody can take his place...ever! I loved Krueger's look (the best since part 3) and Jason's look (the best since part 7)! Loved this one big time. I am a little weary about a Freddy vs. Jason 2 because I think with this entry they should end it for both characters and another one will be pointless and stupid. (A)
*WHEW*....that was a mouth full.....
