Krayt's rise to power explained here:

I noticed an error in the aforementioned information so I re-quote it again in correct fashion:

In this thread, Krayt's performance will be critically evaluated.

Ground realities:-

- Darth Sidious left the galaxy split between two major factions:

1. Representatives of the (former) Galactic Republic
2. Representatives of the (former) Galactic Empire; later known as Fel Empire

- Yuuzhan Vong invaded the galaxy and set the stage for rise of Darth Krayt. Vong made Krayt more powerful (then ever before) by performing experiments on him, extending his life in the process.

- The aforementioned factions formed an alliance known as Galactic Alliance in the aftermath of Yuuzhan Vong invasion.

- After the fall of Vong, Krayt went into hiding on Korriban and began to gather followers. He did not challenge Darth Caedus for supremacy but aided the Jedi Order in its efforts to contain the threat of Abeloth later on. The Jedi Order surprisingly did not act against him (first blunder).

- The Jedi Order committed another blunder for favoring "equal rights argument for Vong remnants" which led to break-up of Galactic Alliance and another war between the aforementioned factions.

- Roan Fel proved to be a decent tactician and defeated the rival faction in the war. Krayt, along with his followers, aided Fel in this war. The Jedi Order itself split and defectors joined Fel in this war.

- When Fel Empire won the war, its Sith allies overthrew its leadership in a coup and took charge of the same Empire. Fel survived the coup and started a rebellion.

>The Jedi Order surprisingly did not act against him (first blunder).

Indeed. Though they did have little knowledge about him save that he existed, and aided them against Abeloth. After the battle, he vanished from their eyes. Other, more defensive plans were made (the search for a location for a hidden temple to run to in case of emergency).

> When Fel Empire won the war, its Sith allies overthrew its leadership in a coup and took charge of the same Empire. Fel survived the coup and started a rebellion.

An addum to this. Fel survived due to being warned by Moff Calixte, who was also ironically the Moff who first made contact with the Sith.
