Here are the scans of the first duel between Exar Kun (Jedi Padawan) vs Vodo-Siosk Baas (Jedi Master) from Tales of the Jedi.

Here are the scans of the second duel between Exar Kun (Sith Lord) vs Vodo-Siosk Baas (Jedi Master) from Tales of the Jedi.

One thing I notice- Exar does not so much outduel, as outpower. He break through his opponent's defense rather than getting around it.

That said, there's a clear increase in skill between the two. The second time he was able to stay on the offensive much more, making it hard for Vodo to even attack, and easily defending against what attacks were made.

I always got the impression he was toying with Vodo before it became utterly apparent that his master would not yield. As soon as Kun is done with the fight it ends. And I'm not sure how he put so much power into that strike given the nature of his weapon.

Lord Stark
I think Vodo is way closer to Kun than often given credit for. For some retarded reason though he refuses to use a saber.

Q99
I guess Vodo just likes the reach, but the problem of a force-imbued staff against a powerful foe is quite clear, even if he is skilled in it's use.

He won by breaking the weapon, so it was a more powerful strike than the back-and-forth.

I wouldn't say toying, since he had to knock Vodo off his feet before doing the winning blow.

I wonder why jedi sense "really bad shit" in people's souls, yet rofl-go ahead and train them to be badasses anyway.

I guess because a lot of the time people can get over it?

And Vodo only seems to notice when, y'know, Exar's way through his training anyway!

So just regular old incompetence then.

Truly, it is the glue that holds the Star Wars universe together.

Q99
This series also has Exar killing a different master, not the one who trained him, and then telling other Jedi, "And master X totally appointed me a master before he died!" ^^

Jedi organization and oversight were pretty loose at the time. And to be fair, at this point Sith cropping up within Jedi ranks *wasn't* really a thing. The Great Hyperspace war didn't have fallen Jedi, and the Hundred Year Darkness, the last major instance of darkside Jedi, was 3,000 years before.

A couple decades later in the KotoR comic, the Jedi are shown to be far more paranoid about this sort of thing, to the point of excess.

They were rather complacent in some ways during Kun's era. I'm still not sure why Vodo thinks he needs to keep using a stick when Kun's already destroyed it before. 40+ years later, during Revan's era, the Jedi are as uptight as it gets.

Nephthys
It was probably some pacifist thing. Lightsabers kill, sticks just disarm and hurt.

Stealth Moose
That actually makes a good deal of sense.
