Why didn't Sam kill Gollum?

I know why Sam didn't kill Gollum on the journey to Mount Doom. It was because Frodo wouldn't let him, & they needed a guide. But in the end of ROTK, Gollum had betrayed them, & what I wonder is why didn't Sam kill him by the end? He he gained some pity for him as well, since he also gained the ring for a while?
Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!
