Notice how in Aliens, Hicks' (Ripley's love interest) lives throughout the film and towards the end but in the other ones, Dallas and Clemens (Ripley's then love interests) die early into the film. I always thought these were poor decisions on the creators' part and were throw away sequences, made purely for shock value.
I mean If you want to kill off a main character, build up to it and pull the trigger near the end of the film. Clemens was really interesting, I wonder how the character would have adapted in the latter ordeal. I think his performance would have lifted the film's quality, I liked the film regardless, most others didn't though.
