I think this manga deserves more attention around these parts. It's getting an anime adaptation as well so hopefully it will bloom in recognition soon.
Anyways, are there any fans of the succesor to Nakaba Suzuki's Kongou Banchou?
danteiscool
Me. You are right; it does deserve more attention.
Esomark
I don't understand why it isn't talked about more. Nakaba Suzuki's art style is really distinctive and rugged, juggling both modern and old school shounen characteristics. His settings really ooze with life as well. Further more, he also has quite a taste for combat scenes and creates some of not just the most intense but creative battles in manga. In my opinion, they make the fights in One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, and Toriko feel underwhelming.
Who would you consider to be your favorite characters? Mine would be most of the Sins (Especially Diane and Ban), Elizabeth, Griamor, Hauser, Geera, and Helbram.
danteiscool
I'd have to agree. There's just something about the overall roughness of the lines that really makes it stand out in terms of art style. Not to mention the level of detail put into everything while still retaining his usual style.
For me, mainly Meliodas, Ban, and Griamor. Diane is a close 4th favorite along with Gilthunder and Threader.
Esomark
Indeed. Suzuki's become one of my favorite mangakas. Another thing I like about his art is that it has a 90s feel to it that you don't see much of anymore.
I just got Vol. 4 in the mail today. Good translation and the extra chapter about Ban is a good bonus.
danteiscool
Yeah, it definitely does have that feel to it.
In English? Nice.
Been keeping up with the recent chapters too?
Esomark
Yeah, Kodansha USA have been releasing a lot of good books this year. Considering the medieval setting of NnT, it works well being read in English.
The latest chapters have been awesome. Hendrickson is a true villain and the corpse of that gray demon was quite a shock. It's going to be scary to see how strong the blood will make him. Meliodas and Ban will probably need to recover their Sacred Treasures right about now.
danteiscool
Agreed.
Yeah definitely. As it is, he already blew Ban in half with a single attack. Given how Ban seems to have trouble regenerating from wounds inflicted by demonically enhanced people, this is already shaping up to be one hell of a fight.
Esomark
Just read the two new chapters. It looks like Elizabeth has a dormant power that's the only thing that can stop Hendrickson at this point. She's no longer a damsel in distress and I hope it will make those who previously complained about her try the manga again.
Where would you rank NnT in power? I think it beats out Claymore and Hunter x Hunter and possibly Bleach and Fairy Tail but it still has a ways to go before it reaches One Piece and end of Chapter Black YuYu Hakusho in power.
danteiscool
Possibly. At any rate, Hendricksen targeted her specifically because of whatever power she possesses. Even if it may not be enough for her to actually fight, it could still slow him down in some other way.
I'm inclined to agree. It beats FT for the most part (Acnologia and other top tier dragons keep things even), though taking into account their speed, FT has little chance probably... and until we see all the Sins at their absolute strongest (including the entirety of Meliodas' demon form), we'll have to wait before ranking them any higher.

Yeah, she could possibly drive him away. If he retreated and returned at a later time, Meliodas and Ban would have enough time to recover their treasures but the question is where will they find them?
I think we will see full blown island and country busting sooner or later. I've seen some reviewers, especially Jason Thompson, say they didn't like how the cast starts off so powerful at the beginning of the story but I disagree. The Sins and Holy Knights are established warriors so why wouldn't they already be so powerful? Further more, training arcs have been done to death.
danteiscool
Hmm, don't know. As it is, Ban already got his nunchuks back from the goddess clan so technically, he already has his sacred treasure back. Meliodas, we just don't know.
Agreed. Personally, I find the idea of experienced protagonists to be pretty cool as usually it takes a long time otherwise for weak protagonists to get stronger and more badass. Besides, it's not as if the Sin go unchallenged by anyone.
Esomark
Have you seen the anime? So far it's pretty good and I like how faithful it is to the manga so far. The animation's pretty vibrant and Suzuki's art style meshes well with it. The opening title showing the different races is pretty cool, too. That dinosaur-looking demon I want to see in the manga as well.
The voices to the characters also sound like how I imagined them to be whenever I read the manga except for Hawk who has a babyish voice tone. Strangely, unless I misread it, the subs said Diane is 297 feet tall when she's more like 30 feet tall.
The conclusion to the Hendricksen battle in the latest chapter was pretty epic.
The way Meliodas took all that energy from the others despite an almost non-existant chance of survival and unleashed it on Hendricksen further shows what a monster he is in combat. I believe his demon blood is of a stronger species than even the gray demon.
danteiscool
Yeah it is pretty awesome, though I do have to agree with you on their voices. But still, it's good.
I thought so too, but I honestly thought that it would take more than that to kill off Hendricksen.
Esomark
It finally reached 100+ chapters. Apparently, this is only the beginning and some new threads are forming. Merlin said she saw a bird-like creature flying away after Hendricksen's defeat, Geera's in a relationship with Gowther now, and Ban is leaving the Sins. The uneasy feeling makes me think we will see another fight with Meliodas and Ban sooner or later.
Was there another episode last Friday? I didn't see anything new on the streaming site I go to.
danteiscool
Yep. Not to mention Gilthunder possibly going on a journey across the land. We still need to see more of Elizabeth's origins as well as Meliodas'. The whole thing that the goddess clan pinned on Ban (kill Meliodas for Elaine's return) still hasn't been brought up yet either. And Gowther's smile... looked off. Seriously off.
It should be out on chiaanime.net (the 'net' part may be wrong). Episodes usually are uploaded late Saturday or early Sunday.
Esomark
Gowther's indeed a creep. It's hard to tell what he's thinking since he keeps that blank expression even when he laughs. Geera also fell in love with him rather quickly. There's probably something sinister behind all that.
If Ban and Meliodas fight again, they'll probably both have their sacred treasures (Unless those nunchucks count as Ban's sacred treasure). That fight will definitely be chaotic.
I'll look up the site after I get off work. Thanks.
danteiscool
Come to think of it, he could've probably used his ability to do something to her. And you know what, too? It literally just occurred me that back when he, Meliodas, and Ban busted into the kingdom, he used his ability to make all of the guards think the three of them were their brother, best bud, or LOVER. He's the goat sin of lust...
Especially if Meliodas decides to use his demon power too. Come to think of it, Ban did pretty well against him when he tried to kill him with his nunchakus, though Meliodas was beat up already at the time. And he's yet to use his physical hunt ability too...
You're welcome.
Esomark
You're probably right since we've seen what he can do with his ability so far. He's living up to the lust part with Geera.
Ban's going back to the Fairy Forest. What could he be planning? Also, do you think his new clothes look like Akira Kongou's?
danteiscool
Yep. Not to mention the kind of clothes he tends to wear.
Kind of does look like it, yeah. Not sure if it suits him, but maybe it'll grow on me. As for what he could be planning... don't know. But perhaps there's a way there to revive Elaine? Some kind of clue?
Esomark
He looks like he's too thin for that coat but it's not totally an eyesore.
King also looks surprised at what he said. It is possible there is another way to revive Elaine but why would Ban have to leave the Sins if there was another way besides killing Meliodas?
I was hoping the anime would lead to more people discussing the series but it unfortunately hasn't. There are too many anime/manga fans on the internet who won't give anything a chance if it doesn't have Goku or Naruto or Ichigo in it. The Vs. section here makes that quite obvious.
danteiscool
Somewhat.
Like I said, perhaps he feels there is some kind of clue in the forest that he may have overlooked. And he still needs to deal with the goddess clan too...
Yeah. Speaking of which, the anime has been rather faithful to the manga so far. Small changes to some scenes aside, it's not bad at all, yes?
Esomark
I saw the raw and it looks like the other fairies aren't happy with King and are flocking to Ban instead.
It's a very good adaptation. I don't see why they had to change why Ban getting "shaved" by Jericho but it doesn't ruin it. I can't wait to see how they'll animate the encounter with Oslo, especially when Meliodas scares him off with the dragon illusion, and the Byzel tournament. What are you looking forward to seeing?
danteiscool
Just read it myself. Wow, that was quite a surprise. But I can't recall him ever planting the seed though. But now as fairy king, I wonder just what exactly he plans to do.
I'm mainly looking forward to seeing Ban's reencounter with King in addition to Meliodas going berserk against Helbram.
Esomark
Dang it! They didn't animate Oslo! I guess they couldn't fit his scenes in with the flashbacks going on as well. Oh well, there's still some incentive to read the manga for those who haven't.
Fortunately, the anime is still faithful to the manga and the battle with Geera is going well. The bluish green color used for the crystals was also a good choice since it would've been too obvious to color them with a typical "death" color like purple.
danteiscool
To be fair, his lack of presence hardly affects the plot at all in the anime.
Yep. Now to just wait for them to reach the tournament arc.
Esomark
That is true but I think it still would've been cool to see the part where Meliodas scares him off with the dragon head animated. There's still the Liones arc, though.
The tournament is starting up. The arc makes me recall the female wrestling episode in Outlaw Star since they both involved a species being banned from participating and the banned species sneaking in.
TheTyrant
Caught up to the manga. Ban and King are the best Sins so far, but Merlin has that potential as well.
danteiscool
Esomark: guess only time will tell.
Really now?
TheTyrant: agreed. Ban and King seem to have the most character development out of all the sins after all, though Gowther is still new for the most part as is Merlin. And we haven't seen Escanor yet either...
Esomark
danteiscool: Yeah, remember the episode where Aisha Clan Clan sneaks into the women's wrestling tournament since another Ctarl Ctarl caused a lot of trouble at a previous tournament? Aisha's method of getting in was a little different than Diane's, though.
TheTyrant: Merlin's already one of my favorite Sins, along with Diane, Meliodas, and Ban. Her teleportation magic and dispelling abilities will probably make her a really unfair opponent for any upcoming opposition.
danteiscool
Hmm, I actually don't watch the series, but I am vaguely aware of it.
On another note... the latest episode is already kick starting the tournament arc... is it just me or does it feel like the anime is moving from one thing to the next in short order?
Esomark
I want to read the manga of it but no one seems interested in translating it. Viz and another company apparently held the license to it but there have been no releases of it.
Yeah, they skipped when Veronica and Griamor tried to take Elizabeth back to the kingdom. I guess this is being done to encourage those who haven't read the manga yet to do so.
I read the latest chapter a while ago. Odd how these three Holy Knights are called the Six Stars of the Azure Sky unless that's a mistranslation or if there is something I am missing. The one called Dogget gives off a Kongou Banchou vibe, especially with his fashion style and his huge fists. That's another manga I would love to buy in English but only Viz can license it and they aren't going for it.
danteiscool
That's a surprise; most animes based on mangas usually have an English translation, either online or in stores.
Huh, probably. Considering the anime is going to be... about 24 episodes long(?), I guess it would make sense to compress it.
Yeah, an odd name for sure. And they're not quite as tough as they were built up to be. And on that note, I'd have thought Meliodas' battle level would be much higher than that...
Esomark
It's especially odd considering the Tenchi Muyo! and various Gundam Wing mangas got officially translated and published. I guess I'll have to learn Japanese since no scan group has picked up where the last team left off.
Meliodas was probably holding back since he was hardly taking the fight seriously and Diane told him not to pick on Dogget too much. I do wonder what Merlin has up her sleeve since her power rating was quite high.
Some interesting plot points have come up in this chapter. Gilthunder knows a secret about Dreyfus that even Griamor doesn't know and a great calamity is coming to Camelot. I read an interview with Nakaba Suzuki and he said he wanted to make a manga where the reader wonders why the next chapter can't come sooner since that is how Suzuki felt about Dragon Ball. I believe he has done just that with Nanatsu no Taizai. I also really enjoyed Ultra Red and Kongou Banchou by him. I hope maybe if NnT sells more, those two mangas will get published here as well.
danteiscool
It would seem so.
A good point. I thought the same as well. In which case, it makes you wonder how high exactly his level is when he's really serious.
Mhm. Perhaps a reemergence of the demon clan? This new threat to Camelot certainly doesn't share any features with any other creature shown so...
Esomark
No new fight yet but the new chapter wasn't a waste. That was a pretty shocking revelation to learn that Lord Dreyfus is really a demon. I didn't expect that at all. He also saved Hendricksen from death and he has all that he needs to unseal the demon tribe. Things are going to get chaotic soon.
danteiscool
Sure was. I honestly knew something was off, considering he did nearly kill Hauser and the other knights that took him into custody since he was supposed to have undergone a change of heart... but damn, didn't expect him to become a half-demon like Hendricksen did.
Esomark
That silhouette of his demon form looked scary. His human form was already brutally strong but what he can do as a demon is probably greater. In some ways, I am glad Hendricksen wasn't killed off. I want to see a rematch between him and Meliodas with both of them at full power. I tend to think we'll see Chapter Black YuYu Hakusho and 23rd Budokai Dragon Ball level feats soon.
I posted a message on Kodansha Comics tumblr asking how well NnT is selling for them and they said the response was greater than they anticipated so they plan on "playing a longer game" with it. I wonder if this means they'll speed up the release schedule or if they will bring over related items to it. I'd like to own an NnT art book if one exists.
danteiscool
Possibly, given that Hendricksen was pretty badly injured prior to turning into a half demon and later a full demon. So him pulling a full recovery... well, I'm sure he'll be even stronger, that's certain.
Hmm, interesting. In that case, we'll just have to wait and see.
You know, you and I did discuss a bit some of the author's strongpoints with his manga and we left out one, I think: foreshadowing. I have a few volumes in English and reading them, I've discovered a number of things that have 'recently' occurred in the manga or are occurring now that were hinted at a very long time ago.
Esomark
I've seen some of the color pages of NnT and they look really good so I'd love to get an art book of it if there is one out there. You don't see many anime/manga art books in the wild.
Really? Which parts?
danteiscool
Too true. Only a few ever get that honor.
Back in about ch. 25 or so (when King rejoins the sins), Ban is drunk and asleep and he appears to be speaking to Elaine about how he planted it, with 'it' not being known at the time. Roughly 80 chapters later, we find out he planted a seed and restored the Fairy forest.
Back before even that (around ch. 2 or 3 when Meliodas and Elizabeth were in Vanya), the patrons of the bar spoke of Camelot and how the new king was really young. Then 50+ chapters later, Arthur makes his appearance as Camelot's young new king.
Then there's the book Dreyfus was reading back around ch. 30 or so and we completely overlooked that, of course. And there was also Hendricksen's commentary to Jericho and Twigo back when he offered them demon blood. Surely, in hindsight, it would make sense for him, the researcher of demons, to have partaken in the blood too.
Esomark
Good work on pointing those moments out. There's more depth to NnT than some claim.
I am glad to see a new chapter after Suzuki took a break for the holidays. Hendriksen couldn't unleash all of the demons but the ones that did come through look like formidable opponents. The giant one with four arms looks like he could give Diane a run for her money and the small black-haired one with the demon mark on his forehead looks kind of like Meliodas so I have a feeling that there might be a connection between the two of them. It looks like Hendriksen may have lost his demon power since he looks human again and Dreyfus told him his "ash" has died away.
danteiscool
Thank you.
Indeed. On the note of Hendricksen, he may have lost the 'ash' power from the grey demon, but I suppose some of the red demon's power could remain deep within him. And yeah, this new guy looks like Meliodas, but with black hair and a different hair style. And on a second reading, it looks like one of the other guys looks like how Meliodas is shown on his wanted poster.
Esomark
Yeah, I don't know why I didn't think of that. I thought his "ash" was referring to his demonic features while his "red" was him being a human but what you said makes more sense. And that one demon does indeed look like Meliodas as he was portrayed in the poster.
We're getting more new developments in the latest chapter. Gilthunder, Griamor, and Hauser are going on the journey that was being hinted at for a while now, Meliodas is preparing to take on the demons, Elizabeth loves Meliodas, and Diane's memories of her past with King came back to her.
danteiscool
Mhm. Wonder what that could mean... maybe he too is related to Meliodas in some way?
Yep. With these three on the move now, it makes you wonder just what will occur on their journey.
Esomark
One thing I first thought was that each demon was an equivalent to the Sins but there are ten of them rather than seven. However, if you put the Sins and Hauser, Gilthunder, and Griamor together, you get ten opponents for the demons. One route I think would be interesting for Suzuki to take would be matching them in one on one fights similar to how a good number of fights in YuYu Hakusho went.
danteiscool
Possibly. But there's now way the demons are going to do things fairly; they will team up against others.
Esomark
These demons are called the Ten Commandments (Although the translators are noting they can also be called the Ten Preceipts as well). Talk about taking artistic and literary license here. The churches I went to growing up would freak out if they saw them!
danteiscool
I know, right? Props to the author; I hadn't seen the title coming at all.
Esomark
Gowther's getting even creepier. The way he and Geera are talking is like they have known each other for years when they have only been in a relationship for a short time now and I don't think I want to know what he plans on doing with Zeal. Zeal's no threat to him so why is he activating his power to him?
danteiscool
Yeah. And you know what? I think he's an out and out liar in general. Remember when he said he wore that suit of armor to keep his powers under control or something? Not once since his debut has he shown himself to lose control of his powers at all. I think the armor was meant to suppress his emotions/personality, because he sure as hell wasn't like this at first.
Esomark
Good point there. Further more, Merlin called the pills she gave him spiritual power equalizing medicine. Without the medicine, his powers are getting overkill. Let's hope Diane can knock some sense into him.
danteiscool
Yep. To think he'd be like this though... knew something was off when Guila first said she was in love, but damn. He lives up to his title as the Sin of Lust; he lusts for love and other human emotions.
Esomark
I wonder how they'll wrap up the anime since there are multiple plot threads in the rescue arc. I hope they'll atleast keep in Diane's battle with the Holy Knights, the final fight with King and Helbram, and Merlin's debut.
danteiscool
I'm not sure. Given the changes they've already made... I'm honestly rather worried.
Esomark
We didn't get a new chapter this week.

However, Suzuki has yet to create a bad chapter so if we get one this coming week, it will make up for the wait.
I don't know if I mentioned this before but have you noticed that there are no fanboys of this manga? It may partly be because it's still relatively a new series but everyone I have encountered online who knows about it is pretty intelligent.
I honestly can't read certain mangas anymore because they have too many fanboys following them.
danteiscool
Just came out earlier today, actually. On that note, looks like this strange 'phase' that Gowther is going through is something that he seemingly doesn't want. There's much more to his nature than originally thought.
Isn't that a good thing though? No people overblowing the feats of the manga?
Esomark
Yeah, he appears to be struggling with something so maybe he's not as creepish as we thought.
It's strange how that demon girl keeps saying "ass" and that Arakune looking demon says the Danafor crater is thirty thousand feet deep. Since Dreyfus said Meliodas did it in an act of rage, he must have used his demon power to do that.
Also, Elizabeth's dream is hinting that the demon who looks like Meliodas on the wanted poster is really that character instead of the Meliodas we are familiar with.
Well, yeah. Also, did you see my last match up?
danteiscool
It's still pretty worrisome that he's going through this kind of process. The fact that he seemingly has no control over it just makes it sad.
In all likelihood, yes. In which case, it makes you question if perhaps the demons had a hand in triggering his rage somehow. Granted, they were locked up until now, but still...
What was the match again? Mind's a little scattered right now...
danteiscool
And you know something? This just occurred to me, but remember how Dreyfus has had that demon inside of him for a long time now, taking over without his knowledge every now and then? Just occurred to me that this demon was the one that kicked Gowther out of his mind when he did his Nightmare stunt on him.
And on another note, it made me recall when Dreyfus slipped up and hit Elizabeth. Considering how Hendricksen needed to be alive to do the release spell for the demons... I couldn't help but think if maybe the demon MADE Dreyfus slip and miss.

Merlin did make him that medicine after all but whatever he has in him seems to be stronger than his own mind.
Well, the fact Meliodas looks different on the wanted poster and Elizabeth had a dream about that figure instead of the Meliodas we know are some good hints that the Commandments played some sort of role in that event. The Commandments also seem both surprised and impressed by what they are seeing so they might not underestimate the Sins.
Ban vs. Younger Toguro.
Good observation there. I wonder if the demon could be extracted from him?
danteiscool
Sure seems that way. But at the same time, taking into consideration what he said after he was stopped... just what exactly is afflicting him? It almost seems like some kind of psychic takeover.
Possibly. Perhaps they simply weren't expecting that kind of destruction in the human world. And considering how powerful Meliodas is in a partially transformed state combined with how scared he seemed of the seal being broken, chances are they're much more powerful than even him transformed.
Ah right, that. Honestly not too sure. I might give the strength/durability advantage to Toguro, but Ban has regen and immortality, not to mention physical hunt...
Possibly. If it can get in him then surely it can come out.
draxx_tOfU
Just caught up, and i must say that at this early, a lot of characters are monstrous. I mean Gowther and Merlin just got introduced and their abilities are pretty broken.
Esomark
Yeah, NnT is pretty powerful for a relatively new shounen manga. But as I said in an earlier post, I like how the characters are already established warriors since it makes the story cut to the chase. The broken abilities also show the Sins can do more than just deliver brute force. They can really mess up opponents who aren't prepared.
danteiscool
Yep. And while they goof around a lot, they're pretty experienced warriors too, knowing how some abilities work from the get-go.
Esomark
The goofing around also usually catches their opponents off guard. The Commandments seem to have similar personalities so I can't wait to see how the fights with them will turn out.
danteiscool
Sometimes. They could've and should've taken down Guila when they first encountered her, but didn't until King drove her off.
I guess we'll find out.
Esomark
This week's chapter was pretty weird, don't you think? Gowther is really a doll? WTF?!? Also, the way Meliodas blew off Elizabeth was really uncharacteristic of him as well, even if it was to protect her. To top things off, Merlin teleporting Hawk Mama into battle was just bizarre. But on the other hand, it shows what a fertile imagination Suzuki has.
Threader is a decent stand in for the Sins. His mask also makes me think of the Stone Masks from the first two parts of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
danteiscool
I think him blowing her off that way is kinda natural; by acting like an uncaring jerk, he hopes she'll back off, though clearly it's not working. And yeah, wasn't expecting him to be a doll... though I suppose it makes sense considering his personality and strange inability to bleed.
Agreed.
Esomark
Yet another awesome chapter! So, this golem, Great Beast Albion, is a leftover weapon used by the demon clan from the ancient war. Threader even states he can sense demonic energy coming from it and it awoke from dormancy around the time the Ten Commandments were unsealed. It was smart thinking on Merlin's part to set up a force field around the city but the yield of it sacrificed the strength of it since the golem destroyed it with three punches. Fortunately, Meliodas's Full Counter blew back its fireball. He breaks the sword from Liz freeing Arthur from the golem's grasp but Merlin throws him his Sacred Treasure. It's one really cool looking sword!
danteiscool
Yep! And now we'll finally be able to see Meliodas unleash his base form's full power!
draxx_tOfU
Well i guess it's safe to say that the golem is screwed. So Merlin is steering (tk?) Hawk Mama while shielding the city and teleporting Meliodas. Pretty impressive. I do have this nagging feeling about her, i just can't pinpoint whether she's the most loyal or will soon be a traitor. Hope i'm wrong about the latter.
danteiscool
I think she's loyal, just amibiguous.
Esomark
I think a gaiden for her is in order here.
danteiscool
Possibly.
And new chapter out. Holy hell, Meliodas is an absolute beast with that sacred treasure of his!
Esomark
Damn, he literally made sashimi out of the golem's arm! The cloning technique was quite a surprise as well. Seeing his Sacred Treasure in action didn't disappoint at all. Suzuki is quite good on delivering jumps in power.
WTF?!? There's another golem attacking the Fairy Forest?
danteiscool
Yep. Now just imagine him using some of his demon power on top of having his sacred treasure...
Honestly, I'm not too surprised by this second golem's appearance.
Esomark
That's a damn scary thought to think about. That's probably the power that created the 30,000 foot crater.
Ban and King are going to have their work cut out for them against this golem. It looks like an Evangelion and probably is as tall as one.
danteiscool
Possibly. And chances are there have to be threats to Meliodas even when he is in such a state...
And more powerful than one too.
Esomark
Despite being rejected by the other fairies, King still takes on the golem. Hopefully this will make up for his past with them. This opponent won't be easy since its casual swings are tearing up the forest and it can emit an energy beam from its mouth.
Wow, didn't expect that coming. Gerharde wants to use Ban as the new Fountain of Youth? That's pretty morbid.
danteiscool
Dunno, they seem rather petty.
Seems so. As it is, his very blood is already restoring the forest at a rapid pace.
Esomark
Well, they do look surprised King is risking his life for them. But what they still don't realize (Except for Gerharde) Ban doesn't really give a damn for them. He just wants Elaine back to life and the forest thriving off his blood is just a by product of his intentions.
Indeed. Jericho and King are also the only ones who can save him right now unless Ban has something up his sleeve.
Esomark
Ouch! It was painful seeing King powering up Chastiefol but it was the only way to stop the golem. He was also able to redeem himself to the other fairies.
Ban's not trapped anymore. Did Jericho cut him loose or could it have been from the golem swiping the tree? After this, he might want to take Elaine elsewhere since it seems like something bad is always happening to the forest. It might be a push for him to rejoin the Sins.
The next chapter is titled The Ten Commandments Begin To Move. This is gonna be epic for sure.
danteiscool
I think they do know, because he keeps saying he's just there to help Elaine.
And yep, King sure has pulled out all the stops to kill that golem.
Oh yeah, wonder how these ten commandments will do things. Especially the two that look like Meliodas...
Esomark
The one that looks like Arakune from BlazBlue will probably have some crazy hax techniques since that's usually the standard for characters like that. Same with that girl with the tentacles. The two giant demons look like they'll give Diane a run for her money if they take her on and the one who likes saying "ass" could be a rival for Merlin. And yeah, the two who look like Meliodas I am wondering about as well. Good thing Meliodas has Lost Vayne back and he can take both of them on with its cloning attribute.
danteiscool
Possibly. Given how big a power boost rookies got just from drinking a bit of demon blood and that these Ten Commandments are undoubtedly higher up on the foodchain than the red and possibly even grey demon, I'd say they'd be more than a match for the Sins at first. Even if Meliodas now has his sacred treasure back.
danteiscool
New chapter out. Yeah... I don't think Meliodas' sacred treasure will mean much anymore...
Esomark
I had a feeling there would be a catch with it since his clones don't have the same strength as the original but it's also something to bring up to those who think the manga is overpowered.
Galan looks even more like an Evangelion than the golem King killed, especially with his lanky figure coupled with how his armor looks. Those extremely high jumps he took to get to Camelot are also characteristic of those mechs.
danteiscool
I suppose so. But given his ability for all of his clones to use Full Counter, it's still pretty overpowered.
Sort of, only more medieval-esque. But it's armor, so who knows what he looks like under it. But damn, and isn't he supposed to still be in a weakened state?
vansonbee
Anyone reading the manga and following the anime? With the anime ending, which chapter should I start with the manga with? Any huge changes between the two (story)?
danteiscool
Try around chapter 88 or so. That should be where the anime is more or less at, give or take a few chapters.
Esomark
Yeah, Galan himself said he has gotten slow despite how mind-blowing those jumps were. He'a definitely still strong since Hawk states his power level is 26,000 and the closing title states that those who stand up to him face destruction. Just a glimpse of him sent a chill down Diane's spine despite how tough we know her to be.
The anime's actually ending on chapter 100. The anime is more or less faithful to the manga so you can easily jump into it after the anime is done but there are some scenes that didn't get animated and some small changes so I still recommend reading the entire manga.
danteiscool
Yeah. Just imagine when his powers are fully restored too! Wouldn't surprise me if he'd have a power level of 100,00 or close to that at full strength.
Agreed, some of the scenes in the manga that weren't in the anime would definitely help you better understand how some other scenes occurred since the anime doesn't really provide much context sometimes.
Esomark
The anime started off faithfully but after the Baste Prison arc, it went into overdrive and only cared about highlighting the fight scenes. Don't get me wrong, the animation is beautiful, the music is inspired, and I would still buy it on DVD but the manga is still the superior version.
danteiscool
Even then the fights scenes often lack the sort of impact its manga counterpart has.
On another note, side story with the vampires now complete. Wow, Escanor has quite an interesting ability while also revealing a few more details about Meliodas.
Esomark
There were edits even in the fights such as when they cut short the tournament fight between Meliodas and Diane, the kingdom infiltration arc was missing Gowther and Threader's brief fight, and only Dreyfus took on Hendricksen when Griamor joined him in the manga. Atleast there's still a reason to read the books.
That was certainly an awesome gaiden. I wonder if it will be released with one of the tankobans or if it will be its own. Either way, I hope Kodansha Comics will bring it over here.
Escanor was scary strong but he can only use his power when the sun rises. The fact it's light based rather than darkness makes me think he could have druid blood like Elizabeth. We also find out the reasons why for that melted building and the deep crater. Further more, I had a feeling there was a connection between Meliodas and Zeldris since they looked similar but to learn that they are brothers is quite a revelation.
danteiscool
Yep. Not to mention they took out Oslo and a bunch of other stuff.
Considering Bandit Ban was, I'm sure it will be, but not until later volumes.
Maybe. Out of the sins, he's said to be the only one that is apparently human, so maybe it's just his special power, just like how Meliodas has Full Counter and Ban has his Snatch. As it is though, the fact he's considered the most powerful of the sins at noon is surprising, though I don't know if that includes Meliodas' demon power.
Not really. It was pretty clear they were related somehow, though I just wonder how exactly Meliodas being a good guy and a failure/disappointment to Zeldris fits in to all of this.
Esomark
Not exactly. They didn't animate his initial appearance in the manga (Which I would've loved to see) but they animated the part where he teleported Diane through his mouth, which was a hilarious scene!
I wish the release schedule was every month rather than every other month but I guess since the market recovered from the big saturation point a couple years back, publishers are taking things slow.
Where did you read about Escanor being the only human among the Sins? I don't recall that unless I missed something in the gaiden.
Yeah, I should've expected that. Why else would they look so similar?
New chapter's out and Galan's even more of a monster than I expected. As Threader (Slater in the official translation) feared, he does make Hendricksen look cute in comparison. He destroyed a good chunk of Camelot with a casual swing of his dragoon lance (I predicted he would do something like that), impaled a Meliodas clone and deduced where the others would attack almost like he had pre-cognition, choked Meliodas in his grasp, kicked back a swing from Gideon into a full sized Diane's forehead, and jumped back after Merlin teleported him.
Even Merlin's powers have their limits.
Next chapter will have thirty pages as well as some color shots. Right on!
danteiscool
Still, he all but came out of nowhere for that scene.
Still, it's better than nothing.
Ah, someone read about it and posted it on TV Tropes under his character profile. You can probably find it under the trivia section or something of his wiki page.
Yep.
I know, right? What's more is that his power (i.e. his magical strength) is completely depleted, meaning physical strength must make up a majority of his power level. Not only that, but from how other characters act, if your magical power is low, then your own strength might suffer too (i.e. you become physically exhausted and therefore can't use much of your strength), so...
It's going to be epic.
Esomark
True, and as I said, publishers are taking things slower since they don't want to risk going into the red. The oversaturation almost killed the market according to some articles that I read about it and the publishing rights to a lot of series are pretty much gone.
Read the TV Tropes page. I'll have to look through that Fanbook.
Yeah, he's generating a lot of air pressure with his swings like how Younger Toguro could do with his punches and, looking back over the scene, he actually jumped away from Merlin's teleportation rather than back from it. That shows that Merlin's teleportation isn't instant but that she needs to have it come in contact with her opponents. Zeldris did say they should recover their energy and tried to stop Galan from going so it's likely he'll have a limit despite his power but the Sins still need to hold fast.
Suzuki's a damn manga machine. You can tell he truly lives and breathes art.
danteiscool
Figures as much.
Yep, it's a pretty good site. Though there are just a few pages about Nanatsu no Taizai they haven't updated in a while. Mainly the character page that they edit.
Still, considering Vivian (her apprentice) couldn't react to her teleportation magic and that the sins themselves mistook it for something else at first when Vivian kept getting ported, it's pretty clear that it still is pretty fast to activate. That Galan could jump clear of its entire radius and then jump right back shows how fast he is too.
Oh yeah.
Esomark
I read some spoilers about this chapter before it got released and some were hoping they were April Fools jokes. Unfortunately for those hoping they weren't, they are not.
Galan could resist Threader's Overpower and Merlin got petrified when she tried buying time with him. Even without magic power he could pull those off but resisting Overpower could be due to his ruthlessness and the petrification could be an innate ability like Full Counter and Snatch. Meliodas also willingly tapped into his demon power while still retaining his human psyche. Unfortunately, it's still not enough to take down Galan. Even using the attack that killed the female vampire and created the deep crater in the Escanor side story just angered him. I'm worried about the outlook of the current team since Galan struck some rather nasty blows on them but considering that Gowther is back to his original size and one of his arrows can be seen sticking out of Galan's neck, maybe he had an illusionary spell cast upon him? That's what some fans who saw the spoilers are hoping for and the fact Merlin's spell is still protecting Elizabeth, Hawk, and Arthur might mean she's still alive but we don't know yet. The next chapter is called Attack of the Demons so we might not know their fates for a while.
The side text said there will be another gaiden. Not sure who it will be for but I think since we already got some new info on Meliodas' past, it could either be Gowther's or Merlin's turn.
danteiscool
Illusion or not, Galan has proven his power and skill and now everyone knows how screwed they are.
Esomark
I wonder how the other demons will react to what Galan did. Zeldris does have some odds with Galan since he blamed his arrogance on getting them sealed and he wanted to get back at Meliodas so if Galan tells him he killed him, Zeldris will probably get vexed.
danteiscool
Maybe. Zeldis strikes me as the kind of guy who'd be pissed he himself didn't kill Meliodas, but would let it slide since he's 'dead.'
That said, it's interesting to see the author literally weaponize the Ten Commandments from the looks of it. So if Galan's passive ability is to turn to stone anyone who lies to him, just how will the author twist the other commandments to be actual powers?
Esomark
Do you mean that he would take Galan's word even if Meliodas is still alive?
Yeah, I wonder how punishments for coveting, stealing (Ban will be guilty of this one if he uses Snatch), cursing the Lord's name in vein, and killing will play out.
danteiscool
Maybe. Galan seems to detest lies based off the glare he gave Merlin, so maybe Zeldris wouldn't think the demon capable of telling a lie himself.
Yeah. But if they're just as overpowered as Galan's...
Esomark
As I thought, it'll be a while before we know what happened to the Sins since the focus has shifted to the Holy Knights trio. We also learn that female demon who likes to say "ass" can absorb souls and so can the red demons. I guess the female demon who looka like Elaine can bypass the seal or maybe it's easier for lower level demons to get through it just like how it was in YuYu Hakusho. That red demon was no match for Gilthunder, Hauser, and Griamor but Hendricksen claims they'll need his help in taking out the gray demon.
danteiscool
If they can absorb souls than the other demons can too in all likelihood.
Possibly. To be fair, they pretty much came in, ready to fight. But this gray demon will be much tougher though.
Esomark
It didn't take much to get the souls from normal humans but ones like the Holy Knight Trio will probably take more effort.
If a gray demon was able to get through, that probably means demons above that one but lower than the Ten Commandments in power could be out as well.
I wonder if their presence will make the Giants and Fairies come out of hiding. Their numbers might be fewer than they once were but they still exist. Probably why humans outnumber them is because those two races age slower than humans do so they don't need to reproduce as often as humans do.
danteiscool
Maybe. But if one of the TCs step in, I doubt the difference between civilians and Holy Knights will make much of a difference.
And that'd be bad, considering a red demon alone could burn the fairy forest to ashes.
Most likely, given how destructive and violent the demons are.
Esomark
The fact it took just a finger poke on a normal human shows how fragile normal humans are in this universe. No wonder they get looked down upon by the demons.
That was a pretty strong showing for a demon that is considered low leveled. They look to be around C Class YuYu Hakusho demons in power though their intelligence seems to be more of an E Class since they behave more instinctually than the Ten Commandments so using the YYH ranking system is probably not a good way to guage them. An S class demon in Darkstalkers can destroy a solar system while an S class in YYH is a country buster at best!
King also redeemed himself in the fairies' eyes so I don't see why they wouldn't fight along with him now.
danteiscool
Yep.
As far as we know, anyway. It did get killed off pretty quickly before it could show much more of its power. We have to remember how much damage the red demon did to the fairy's forest when it went for the fountain of youth in Ban's backstory.
For now. Hard to tell with these guys...
In the recent chapter too... think maybe whatever this flashback is going to be about, is what got Dreyfus possessed in the first place? And considering Hendricksen is a Druid, he's clearly more spiritually sensitive than others... maybe he came into contact with something that corrupted him.
Esomark
Yeah, maybe Faudrin was able to use the demonic energy from that attack Meliodas did to slip out from the seal.
The gray demon was tough to take down but Hauser, Gilthunder, and Griamor have certainly improved since the last major arc. They aren't on the levels of Hendricksen and Dreyfus but they have potential to get there. The way Griamor used his Barrier ability to shield the others also made me think of how the G-Self from Gundam Reconguista in G shielded its allies with its energy shield.
danteiscool
Nah, it's clear this guy has been possessing Dreyfus for a long time now. Must've slipped out somehow way earlier...
Yeah. Gil at least is just a step below Dreyfus and Hendricksen while Howser and Griamor are a level below him.
Esomark
Well, he did tell the Ten Commandments he had been "awake" for the last ten years.
Gilthunder's definitely more serious than Hauser and Griamor. They tend to be goofs but they still know how to throw down.
I've been trying to think of a good match for Galan. I imagine he would give UQ Holder a run for their money as well as the Straw Hats. I don't mean to sound likr a broken record when it comes to YuYu Hakusho but he's definitely above the Dark Tournament demons in power.
danteiscool
True.
Also true, though Howser is more of an actual goof than others.
If not for immortals like Karin, I would say he could stomp just about anyone short of the high and top tiers.
Esomark
Chapter came a little later due to Golden Week.
Even though Hendricksen learned druid magic, he was expelled by them for his Acid ability since he hated waiting for the dead to decay into skeletons naturally.
I guess Purge is utilized with positive energy while Acid is fueled by negative energy.
We also learn that Fraudrin took over Hendricksen's mind first before Dreyfus offered himself to him to save Hendricksen's life but Fraudrin cast a spell on Hendricksen to make him go along with what he wanted.
So Liz was killed by Fraudrin? Now we know why Meliodas destroyed Danafor.
cdtm
I wonder how strong Escanor is, really? Said to be the most powerful by far of the sins, so I bet he's at least pretty close to Galan level himself, if not the others commandments.
And who keeps him in check when the sorcerous isn't around? The power fluctuation happens every single day?
Esomark
The Sins certainly need all the help they can get but I hope it doesn't turn out that Galan is weaker than the other Ten Commandments. That would be too much like how Raditz almost killed Goku and Piccolo but he was actually weak compared to Vegeta and Nappa. There's already enough Dragon Ball influences in this manga.
I don't think anyone keeps Escanor in check. Perhaps he's dormant or something after the Sins scattered?
danteiscool
Well, if I recall things correctly, his commandment is 9th among the 10. So if his power is in proportion to that...
Well, he may be arrogant during the day, but I'm sure he was okay during the day time so long as no one tried to fight him. And his power grows a lot until he peaks at noon... so considering he obliterated the vampire king who was somewhere north of 4,800 in power level while only barely peaking, then it wouldn't surprise me if Escanor could fight one of the TCs on relatively equal footing.
Esomark
New chapter is out. Turns out it was speculated correctly that Gowther modified Galan's perspective into thinking he killed the Sins and Threader but they still suffered hefty wounds. Merlin's out of action for a while since her body is still petrified but she can still communicate through her Sacred Treasure and having Gideon kicked back into her head probably gave Diane amnesia since she doesn't recognize King.
We'll be getting a training arc but the story's gone on long enough without one so I am fine with it. While the Sins didn't go unchallenged before the Ten Commandments were unsealed, they (The Ten Commandments) are from a time where war was all that each major race knew.
I don't doubt that Elizabeth is the reincarnation of Liz.
danteiscool
Yeah... still, Galan wrecked them damn hard for them to have to undergo training now.
Esomark
Well, I wasn't denying that. He's a monster even by demon standards but it was fortunate the killing blows were just an illusion. If Gowther wasn't there, they probably would've really died.
King came back but I wonder if Ban will return as well. Also, since Elizabeth is going to undergo the training and she's likely the reincarnation of Liz, I wonder ig she'll start fighting like her.
danteiscool
Too true.
Probably. He doesn't plan on being the Fairy King, after all and with the TC running around, looking for a way to revive Elaine wouldn't be too practical. And as for her, I can't quite say. At any rate, she'll most likely learn how to channel her power.
Esomark
So Diane's memory loss is a combination of being struck on the head and Gowther's Lost World spell. She mentioned the name 'Matrona' as she was running back; maybe getting hit on the head and the spell resetting her mind unlocked something in her mind she had forgotten about? The closing text also mentions demons are attacking the giants' home. Hopefully the other giants will be as strong as Diane.
danteiscool
Seems that way. Honestly, it's amazing how things are going now.
Also, notice how out of all the sins, Gowther is the only one that lives up to the whole 'being made up of the worst criminals' thing surrounding the formation of the Sins?
Esomark
Gowther's indeed acting more 'sinful' than the others. Fortunately Merlin has him restrained with that bracelet but who knows how long that'll last.
Saw some color pages of the gaiden and according to the translators, Matrona is the leader of the giant clan. The gaiden will also be a two parter.
danteiscool
Mhm. Especially since he's still just as emotionless as ever.
I see. And we'll be seeing Matrona in the coming chapters as well...
Esomark
Read the first part of the gaiden yet? Matrona might look hot but her heart is cold. I don't blame Diane for punching her.
danteiscool
Yep. But at the same time, Diane must still really respect her considering she used her name as an alias back during that tournament arc.
Esomark
I made an error in my last post but I can't edit it now. I mixed up how Diane had to pass through Edinburgh where the Ten Commandments are to get to Megadozer by thinking the demons were attacking Megadozer when their location was just on the way.
Anyways, I am glad the new chapter is out. Galan doesn't realize his mind was toyed with and Diane's memory loss saved her from being petrified by him. She still can't get a hit on him but it turns out Matrona is still alive and she intervened just in time.
danteiscool
Yeah though I wonder how that is possible given her injuries at the time of her supposed death.
Esomark
The color spread for the new chapter is pretty sweet. Galan's green armor makes him look even more like an Evangelion, Derriere's (Funny name choice considering her verbal tic) orange hair matches her wild appearance, the other soul eating girl's pink hair and leg stockings fit her youthful look, Zeldris wears red instead of black like I thought he would, and the light green tentacles make the other demon girl look like Cthulhu's daughter. Estarossa's gray hair I didn't see coming at all since he resembled Meliodas so much.
For some reason, Matrona knocked out Diane without saying a word. Luckily her earth manipulation got them away from Galan's onslaught although he got a few nicks on her. It was also amusing how Monspiet's Purgatory Flame Bird went so far and did so much destruction in its path only to be eaten by Hawk Mama!
So Meliodas's power that Merlin took is in the land of the Druids. I can't imagine they'll be happy to see him.
danteiscool
To be fair, time was of the essence since Galan broke free of the rock prison on the next page. Diane was in no condition to be doing much fighting so it'd make sense to KO her and run for it.
Which only raise the question on how she is okay after swallowing such a destructive attack.
Oh yeah, but I guess we'll soon be seeing Meliodas at full power.
Markness
King and Mel are having a rift brewing between them. King does have a bad habit of jumping to conclusions so he really needs to get a hold of himself or he'll keep straining his relations with the other Sins.
danteiscool
Yeah. What makes it more frustrating is that King has known Meliodas now for at least a decade or so and yet he is so quick to judge Meliodas now based on the fact he's a demon. Never mind that if Meliodas had truly intended to do any harm, he'd have done it years ago back when he still had his full power available to him.
Markness
Yeah, King's attitude is really agitating. Meliodas's question to him also makes you wonder if he's even a full blooded fairy.
Wow, Meliodas getting his power back was practically a natural disaster!
cdtm
King was definately way out of line, but I love how Meliodas wasn't rattled in the least.
Attitude was kind of like "Kings just being King".
danteiscool
Agreed. Wonder what his power level is now that he's got it all back. And on a similar note, just how will the others grow in power? As for King's lack of wings, I think it means that he's yet to fully develop his abilities. So when he obtains his wings, his power will likely increase to a level where he can go against the TC.
I suppose it's fitting given his child-like appearance that he'd act rather childish in a sense.
Markness

Yeah, I like that about Meliodas. He's pretty laid back for the most part.

It must be pretty big since the TC have sensed it. I can't imagine them sitting still for this. Gilthunder's come up with a thunder shield and armor while it looks like Howzer's created a piercing technique with his wind.
danteiscool
He sure is.
That's certainly true. Which could only mean that they'll be on the move very soon, regardless of how much power they've recovered. And hopefully their power levels will change too, because new techniques or not, it won't do much good if they aren't powerful enough.
Markness
Damn, that was epic! Meliodas practically chewed Galan up and spat him back out! A complete reversal from what happened back in Camelot. If Merlin's teleportation lasted longer, Meliodas probably would've killed Galan. The way he bled out and him howling out at the end makes him even more Evangelion-like.
Despite that, Zeldris doesn't look discouraged in the slightest. I just wonder how Estarossa views Meliodas especially since he's the older brother of the two.
danteiscool
And what makes this even better/terrifying is that this is him still in his human form after getting his power back. And given the asskicking he just gave Galan, that would mean his current power level as a human is probably even higher than the 26,000 that Galan still has!
I'm willing to bet that those two are capable of putting up a better fight than Galan at any rate, regardless of how weakened they are still.
...And in hindsight, I just remembered something. Meliodas had access to his full power back when all of the sins were still together and had raided the vampires' palace. And even then, Merlin had stated that Escanor at his strongest has a power level higher than the other sins easily... so would Meliodas' demonstration of his full power (human form) in this chapter suggest that Escanor's highest power level is even much greater???
Markness
That's a scary thought. He's like Dark Schneider from Bastard!! in that while he is the "good guy", he's ruthless in combat and he's also a pervert although Meliodas saves it all for Elizabeth while Dark Schneider gropes any woman in his path. As for Escanor, we'll just have to wait and see.
I thought the bag head giant would be a monstruous brute but he talked intelligibly and reminded Galan that he isn't immune to his own curse. I didn't see that coming at all but it goes to show that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Estarossa mutating that bird was a complete "WTF?!?" moment. What sin did that bird commit?
Except for Estarossa, the Commandments are scattering all around Britannia. Derrierie and Monspiet easily pass off for humans since they really don't look different than them. Sure, Derrierie has that demon energy around her body but from a distance it just looks like provacative clothing. The tentacle girl and the bag head giant went where Diane's boulder crashed which has been made into a new arena. While they are obviously not human, this is a fantasy manga so they really don't stand out too much. The tentacle girl could be mistaken for a dragon while the bag head could pass off as one of Diane's race.
Huh? Hawk now has horns and a tail, Arthur has a cat on his head, and Griamor turned into a baby? This chapter was really bizarre!
danteiscool
I made something of a similar comparison too, though Meliodas is much more of a nice guy than DS ever was.
Which made for a nice surprise; it's good to see the old molds being broken, though we can't be sure how much until we see how he fights. And if I had to guess, that bird probably ticked him off just by existing...
True, though even then you'd think people would at least raise an eyebrow at the fact that her 'clothing' is definitely not made of actual material. And based on the looks of those guys at the merchant village, I'd say that even for NnT civilians, those two do stand out a lot.
Maybe crazy side effects of training in whatever the druids have going on?
cdtm
Galan must be pretty psthetic by Ten Commandment standards if Meliodas messed him up that badly without even reaching his full strength.
Either that, or the Commandments are weakened themselves. They did ssy something about them only having half their strength, with their magic/energy needing time to regenerate.
The thing is, nobody said anything about him being in a weakened state, or ever standing a chance of winning in the future..
danteiscool
To be fair, Meliodas regaining his full power wasn't expected by them at all, even if they became aware of it the moment he got it back thanks to their power sensing abilities.
All of them are running on virtually 0 magical power, meaning their current power levels (around 26,000 to maybe 30,000 given Galan's apparent rank) are but a small fraction of their actual power.
Markness
Pretty much what danteiscool said. We've yet to see the Ten Commandments at full power but what they can do at the moment is still impressive. Galan also stated how disappointed he was with Meliodas in their earlier fight so we got an implication that Meliodas was in a weaker state.
Elizabeth got the shaft in her training. It was botched because Zaneli loves Meliodas but since Elizabeth is Liz's reincarnation, Meliodas will never look Zaneli's way.
We have some new faces from the Pleiades of the Azure Sky and Wayeo is back after seeing him last during the victory ceremony. These guys aren't pushovers since they were able to knock out Fraudrin although we got a hint that Fraudrin isn't in complete control of Dreyfus's body.
danteiscool
Exactly. And since magic power seems partially tied to stamina which affects their other stats, chances are their physical strength and willpower are even greater once they regain their magical power.
Yeah, though chances are, she probably still benefited from the training in some way we don't know of yet.
If anything, these new knights seem kind of OP given what their special powers are.
