I thought of this while watching a Shenmue playthrough, thinking Sleeping Dogs was pretty much the future Shenmue.

So, who wins?

This does count all the DLC.

If it's a straight up fist fight...I'd say Ryo. Because Wei Shen knows Martial Arts, but it's a part of his entire package. Ryo has lived martial arts his entire life and has beaten not only martial arts masters several times in both games, but has defeated seemingly superhuman opponents like Don Niu who's a giant and Chai Ka who flips around like a monkey.

Wei Shen. The dude took alot of punishment such as shotgun blasts, torture and has shown alot of pain tolerance and willpower.

Call me when Ryo can be tortured almost to death and still kill most of the chinese Triad with his bare hands.

I'm not arguing Wei's durability. But the guys he fought were all nameless goons aside from the torturer who still seemed to be more of a specialist in torture than a straight up fighter, even though he was good.

And it wasn't most of the Triad. It wasn't even half. The only people he dealt with from the torture were Big Smile Lee's group. Which was basically about 1/6 of the entire forces if you consider Winston/Wei's people, Broken Nose Jiang, Uncle Po's right hand man, and Po's grandson. Each Red Pole had their own forces.

Ryo on the other hand has fought and beaten world class masters, as well as beat up 100 guys in a single setting by himself. And Don Niu is about 7+ feet tall and weighs at least 350lbs. Ryo destroyed him with a palm strike.

No matter how much punishment Wei can take, Ryo can dance around him all day and counter pretty much anything he throws. And he has several moves that can instantly break Wei's bones. No matter how tough he is, he isn't fighting with a shattered arm or leg. Also Ryo is just flat out stronger than Wei going by his cutscenes and QTE's.

Wei Shen also fought in a world-class tournament. Apparently you haven't played the DLC.

The only DLC I played and knew about was Nightmare in North Point.

I just watched a playthrough of it though, and the only one stated to be a master is the Tournament Master, Zhang. And even then it's self proclaimed while he's drunk. Everyone else is stated to be the best of the best of the best, but Zhang is the one who said it and they all just appear to be underground fighters who made it big.

One guy is an MMA Fighter, the other is Muay Thai, etc... The guy with the ponytail said he used to break legs, but he figured he'd give the tournament a try. Another said he won the underground fight circuit for the past 5 years.

Ryo on the other hand has fought Master Baihu, a guy with the title Master in his name, and a high up in the Chiyou Men, a gang of kung-fu mafia assassin boogeymen that are so powerful pretty much the entire world fears them. They're worse than the Triad.

The style Baihu uses is the same used by Lan Di, and possesses several moves that can immediately kill you. Lan Di used one to kill Ryo's dad. Ryo beat him. A less impressive Ryo in the first game beat Chai, a Chi You Men assassin. He also beat Don Niu who is 7'2, 397lbs.

He beat him with a single move. He's also done stuff like beaten a giant guy raised in the wilderness who was literally ignoring hits from grown men until he just knocked them away.

And displayed superhuman strength several times through the games like bakchanding people unconscious, kicking and punching them across rooms and holding people off the ground by the throat.(Lan Di backhanded Ryo halfway across a dojo, then crouched down and lifted him clear off the floor with one hand behind his back) And of course there's the fight with the Mad Angel's where he took down 100 Men. And Ryo did all of this with his bare hands. Wei has the option of environmental attacks, Ryo can just beat you up.

He's fought and defeated more impressive people than Wei has in a hand to hand fight, and he's defeated more at once as well. Wei's better all around, but he's not better in a fight. With the way they approach slightly over the top martial arts, I wouldn't be surprised if a few clean hits from Ryo leave Wei bruised and battered.

And Ryo will be getting more feats when Shenmue III is released.

How's Ryo's ground game? Wei's ground game is amazing. He could escape seemingly any hold the muay thai dude put him in.

Oh, and just because its never actually stated that these guys are masters, doesn't mean they aren't. Their performances against Wei are impressive as far as Martial Arts goes. What about all the holds Wei knows, the tackles, the submissions. While in the Tournament DLC, you can unlock and use various Martial Arts, like Jeet Kun Do, Krav Maga, and stuff.

Also, Wei is durable enough to take tons of hits from Ryo, and he's skilled enough to counter him, get the Remastered version on PS4, then come back here and debate.

Jmanghan
Wow I was an *******, lmao. Anyway, Wei wins, Ryo is still nowhere near Lan Di's level, and there's stuff that's canon for Wei like taking on forty Shaolin Monks single-handedly while unarmed and beating thirty 18k Triads who were armed with poison blades, one knick means death which means he likely wasn't hit once.

Also people on the Zodiac Island are described as "the best of the best", Wei beat one of them in a fair fight while actively dying and near-death from poisoned tea, only reason he survived after the fact is he found the antidote which was some random plant. Hell IIRC he had to beat like 20 black belts just to qualify for the tournament or to show off what he could do, I don't remember super well.

There's some strength stuff too like Wei lifting a guy straight-up off the ground into the air in front of him for 10 seconds straight while the guy is struggling and Wei had just finished chasing him. Not even against a wall either, just lifts him into the air as his feet dangle, happens during one of Roland Ho's missions.

Also I don't think we can ever underestimate just how impressive the ending sequence is... The guy took a ****ing drill through his knees and was tortured for hours and legit just got up and killed almost everyone in the building with his bare hands (and guns as well) before fighting who was considered the Triad's version of the Boogeyman, who himself was armed with a damn sword while Wei was unarmed.

Then on the same night a few hours later on his injured legs he jumps like 10-15 feet without a jump start onto the back of a speeding motorboat and kills Big Smile Lee in a fist fight. I don't buy Ryo being more skilled honestly, maybe knowledge-wise but just like Wei a lot of who he fights are mooks.
