Yah, dood. Been a Sentai and Kamen Rider fan for ages.

So about this movie. So far the only tidbits mentioned are that Zordon will be in it. He'll be the first Red Ranger. Movie might possibly start with a flashback scene of Zordon in the Jurassic Era or something sealing Rita Repulsa away. Flashfoward to the present. Yadda, yadda. Locate five teenagers with attitude. They Morph and all that stuff. From what they're saying is that they're trying to make the film seem modernized, we might see Bayformer-ish Zords that have multiple forms. Early concept pics showed Zords that have a vehicle mode. So we might possibly see zords "transform" into a vehicle, a dinosaur and a Megazord appendage. So far no one from the first season of the show is set to return and I honestly think they should keep it like that. Film might flop, but I just want it to entertain.

Oh god, so it's much worse than I could have possibly imagined.. God.. help us all.

Scythe
Yeah I kinda wanted them to go as campy as possible since that's sorta the source material's schtick. The modernization of it to me is what'll probably make the film flop. It doesn't help either that I believe the dude who directed Project Almanac is supposedly directing. I wanted this film to be more like Pacific Rim, not Project Almanac. We'll see though. It's defenitly one of those love it or hate it types of films due to the franchise being so-so in America. Toku films in Japan are amazing and over the top. Something that'd never fly here in the U.S. sadly.

Meh... With how the times change I figured we might get something less campy and something more Bayformers esque. And no Lord Zedd I take it? Kinda like the idea of Zordon being the first Red Ranger though.

At the very least, just hope it's as entertaining as or better than last year's TMNT.

As of now, it doesn't seem like they'll go into Lord Zedd or a sixth ranger for that matter. Things are still in early development so we might see drastic change.

As for why Rita's green, I hope it's because she's using the green power she once bestowed on Tommy for herself. It's a reboot after all and if there isn't a 6th ranger in this, then... would make sense.

I don't have a problem with the "Guyverish" look

Scythe
Suit are ok, I'm hoping since they seem mostly CGI'ed we'll see over the top fight scenes that aren't limited to what wire-work can do. They revealed a small tidbit of info a few days ago in that the suits seem to be Alien body armor which is why they're so funky looking.

I honestly prefer this. We've had a movie where they wore traditional spandex in the first movie's sequel, now I want to see a massively different approach because "doing their own thing" is what Power Rangers should be about. Making a feature film that mimics Sentai in my opinion won't fill up seats as opposed to modernizing it.

AsbestosFlaygon
Too much blue on Blue Ranger. laughing out loud

Ridley_Prime
I do like at least how they're still having the same original human characters as the Rangers (Jason, Zack, Trini, Billy, and Kimberly), just they'll be played by a different cast of course. If we ever get Tommy in the future, I'd prefer he be played by someone else too; even as young and well in shape looking as Jason David Frank still is now, it'd be kinda weird for him to be the only one to reprise his character role in this rebooted continuity... xD

AsbestosFlaygon
No. Pls not him again.

Ridley_Prime
I'd only want to see how the Green Ranger with dragon shield would look redesigned alongside the others; never cared much for what came after like White Ranger.

Jason David Frank could have a role as Tommy's father when they bring him in prolly for the sequel.

Ridley_Prime
Been hearing more now lately that this reboot is gonna be more dark and gritty. i.e. Bryan Cranston compared it to The Dark Knight in terms of overall tone.

With the taste BvS left in people's mouths in being needlessly broody, edgy, and grimdark with like Superman and mostly everything, this kinda worries me.

Kazenji
Almost everyone is jumping on that bandwagon when doing movies, Doesn't work with everything.

Well it's the Red Ranger's zord, so of course it'd have those colors. Agree with the Ironman comparison though I guess. lol Just hope the Mastadon, Triceratops, Pterodactyl, and Sabretooth Tiger look on par with the T-Rex in design as well, and hopefully they'll have a good few minutes of screen time fighting before having to merge together. Allows the individual zords to shine a bit more as opposed to going straight to merging like in most of the episodes.

Scythe
It's sorta worth noting that having out of suit powers is nothing new to the franchise. It's sorta established in Japan that the MOTW would 1HKO teens if they were regular teens. Over the years some seasons made some teams seem like the X-Men as long as they had their Henshin device on them or were powered up in some way.

Wrong... Alot of movies would have been very different with the mishandling of the action. Whether you agree or not.

Ridley_Prime
If some of the new cast are actual martial artists like some of the original cast were then it would help as far as that (don't know if they are or not), but it's Power Rangers, so I'm sure they'll focus more on the CG zord action at the end of the day...

That was part of the charm with Power Rangers though. Even this film judging from the trailers looks like it'll have its cheesy moments and one liners, albeit, in a modernized setting. Out of the original PR series, the movie with Ivan Ooze was what aged terribly due to the horrible looking CG for the zords and stuff, even for the time.

But yeah, this looks pretty solid. Just hope they'll use the classic theme or some remix for the actual film over the generic music in the trailer.

Ridley_Prime
A campy kid's show that was based on some low budget sentai was never actually high art? You don't say.

Lord Lucien
The movie's going to suck for one simple reason: no Bulk and Skull. They were the heart and soul of the show.

Nothing in this movie will top the terrible acting, corny dialogue, over-the-top fighting, cringe-inducing toy sequences when the Zords showed up, or the silly guys fighting in rubber suits. These are all things that made the show endearingly campy. There's a kind of charm to it's awfulness. $10 says the remake/reboot will have 0 charm or camp and be instantly forgettable.

StiltmanFTW
The trailer was awful.

Apparently the rock monster materialize from debris around the area when Rita summons them. Goldar seems to be actually made of gold. Not sure if this is a spoiler or not, but it seems Rita is out to steal large amounts of gold in this movie. Hence Goldar.

I wonder if they'll get new power weapons or updated versions of the original power weapons.

This looks so damn exciting a serious Action fantasy movie.
This Rita Repulsa has killed rangers, she will get her hands dirty instead of complaining on the sidelines, a functional suit to fight in that seems similar to Scorpina, she can create rock monsters so new henchmen, and she's a Dark Lord a pure evil Villain much like Blackheart, Darth Vader, etc.
Also looks like Goldar will be a formidable villain not a comedic villain he was in the original mmpr movie so great.

Also great we get to see their transformations, Practical armor suits with mostly same style helmets mix of old and new, actual flawed rangers so character development likely, also the challenge of remaining normal tougher since they have become superhumans powers without the armor suits.

It's very laughable people complaining about changes including Rita's costume.
The whole point of reboots is do something different not be a rehash of what has already been used or done which is extremely unoriginal, uncreative, and very boring.

Ok as a big childhood fan of the show, I just came back from it.

The cast was ok, especially Jason and Kimberly. But the characterization felt off compare to the original show. In the original show, they were all good kids and long time friends. In the movie, all of them are characterized as the "weirdo" or troubled kids.

Billy was some autistic nerd.
Zack(he actually resembles Adam a lot) was a half crazy "stalker" in the first half, he lives with his sick mother.
Trini was a lonely lesbian(it didn't show much in the movie, she just told the team about it).
Even Jason and Kimberly are troublemakers, who had made fateful mistakes.

So none of them actually resemble the original characters. None of them were better than the original five. That's my biggest complain. I'm ok if you add some problems to one or two characters to create drama, but a total rewrite on all 5 characters, well, why not rename them as brand new characters? One good thing is that Jason/Kimberly pair was happening.

They've never met each other as well. The 2/3 of this movie was about how they form relationship through setbacks, I'm ok with it but it might be too boring to some people.

Rita was fine, while she was a bit too cruel in the first half. Zordon and Alpha were perfect. I'm ok with setting Rita as the old green ranger and Zordon as the old red leader of the team.

The fights was cool with the dinozords, but it turned a lot worse when they merge, and the merge process wasn't even shown clearly. The fighting between Goldor(it was just a giant burning gold dumbass!) and the Megazord was boring and slow if you compare with other giant robot fighting movies like Pacific Rim and Transformers.

Ok, the best scene is Amy Jo Johnson and JDF making cameos after the fight. I was yelling "Kimberly" in the cinema when I saw her.

The post credit scene showed Tommy had moved here.

Overall if you are a power ranger fan, it was "ok" but could have been much better and close related to the show, I don't regret seeing it.

Good post.

Average movie. My favorite parts:

- PR theme song

- Amy Jo's and Jason Frank's cameos http://images.killermovies.com/forums/icons/v2/icon12.gif

Me, too!

TheOneFirestorm
Well I saw it today and a great action fantasy movie as expected.
Brilliant cameos, flawed believable relatable characters including Rita Repulsa, brilliant foreshadowing or easter egg, lines that make it obvious sequels and a sequel, and like The Avengers right mix of serious and funny stuff.

Scythe
Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I was going to. Fun film.

I'm with you. My kids used to watch the TV show and it was unbearable. How anybody would want to see this movie is beyond me.

Is it really that hard to believe a show that's been running for
20+ Years that's based off a show that's running for 40+ years has people that make up a fanbase for it? Even go as far as I don't know, liking it? There's worst franchises to question about imo. Some peeps value their opinion alittle too much, which is fine. We all like to feel important.

Scythe

Not exactly helping your point with those examples.

Once you hit puberty and have to deal with the ignorant youth, you'll find out that its a lot harder than you think.

After just seeing it a little bit ago, pretty much agree for the most part, though I didn't really have a problem with how they changed the characterization of the rangers some. It captures the "teenagers with attitudes" thing more than being a bunch of unrealistic goodie goodies. Regardless, I suppose making them more relatable to appeal to some masses was inevitable.

Not only was Goldar crap, but you'd think its appearance would've at least changed some after Rita absorbed herself into it, and it having her face and some of her characteristics or something.

One thing not mentioned that others seemed to gripes with (some more than others) was the crispy cream donut product placement, but I personally got more of a laugh with how they executed it, even if it was kinda overdone.

Other than that, it kinda had the Godzilla 2014 syndrome, where what you wanted and waited to see was only in the last few minutes of the film, but I can give it a pass with this first film assuming the sequels will be more about the action. Aside from Goldar and the disappointing Bayformers Megazord, I surprisingly grew to like the Alpha 5, Zordon, and pretty much everything else we got, different as they were. Makes me more nervous as to how they'll handle Lord Zedd and Tommy though, and hopefully they may add in Bulk & Skull later as well. Could've had them over the generic placeholder bullies we had... :/

They weren't "unrealistic good" guys in MMPR series, they were good teenagers with flaws and we saw they develop and grow up through the series, especially Kimberly and Billy. If you want to use their names, you should stick to the characters well, otherwise why not use brand new characters?

And the movie seems to bring them to a very low level. Even Jason and Kimberly had done ridiculously stupid/mean stuff.

Ridley_Prime
Fair enough. I don't deny that they had development in the original also, though didn't see them as particularly flawed but mostly a natural at whatever it was they did. I didn't really have a problem with how they were handled in this movie, but can see why others might see this different take on them as kinda pushing the envelope.

They do have flaws throughout the series, just not that big like using a cow for prank. If they are flawless they wouldn't have been a good team and nearly every of them wouldn't have been so popular.

I won't complain a bit if the movie characters are brand new characters with new names. Since they do use the original series' names, I wish they could stick to the original a bit more.

Still, the movie was ok and I would love to see this franchise live on, and I hope they could give AJJ some important supporting role.

Ridley_Prime
I suppose I can see that. Yeah, more AJJ would be cool.

I got over this well before the movie was out, but at first I was kinda annoyed at how they changed the race/nationality of some of the rangers for the sake of being more politically correct. I mean I know having a black guy as black ranger and an asian as yellow ranger would fly much less now compared to back then, but never saw it as that big a deal and still really enjoyed the characters for what they were. The Zack we got may as well have been called Adam, as he seemed more like him than Zack. Still liked him though, especially since the actor was someone who grew up with the original like us. But yeah, aside from that kind of nitpick and after seeing the film, think those kind of changes may have been for the better, especially with like Billy. Always liked Billy, but this take made me like him even more.

Do you think the girl Kimberly had "ruined" was Kat?

I always think Kat as a ranger was far less impressive than Kimberly in the original show, but as a villain she was fantastic.

Ridley_Prime
Forgot already, but did she look anything like Kat? Agreed regardless; Kat was better when she was something straight out of Animorphs. lol

Just learned or recalled this, but apparently the original yellow ranger in the show was originally going to be cast by a Mexican, but they got fired early over something stupid, so we got the late Thuy Trang for the part instead (her real life death still saddens me), so I guess the yellow ranger we got in this movie actually makes some sense.

Dunno.

Yes, I don't have much problem with her, Trini was probably the most bland one in the original five.

Seriously, it's so good to see them all together. Other than Amy, I also like David Yost and Austin a lot.

RIP Trini, we all remember you.

Recently learned the fat guy who played Ernie of the juicebar died IRL as well. Figured he wouldn't live that long because of his health, but a heart attack happened back in 2008, although he had been focusing on losing weight by then which he lost like 40 pounds but it wasn't enough. Poor guy...

Equally unfortunate was that the last thing Thu Trang was in (if I remember right) was the Crow sequel City of Angels, or Shitty of Angels as some call it; she played the villain in it and the way she died ironically foreshadowed how she died IRL because of a car.

Sigh.
