Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

Since it's coming to PC soon, I thought this was a perfect time for it to warrant it's own thread.

Even if there was no recent stuff, there's enough added that makes this viable of a new thread.

Anyway, loving this game. The new "Eternal Ferrystones" make it SOOOOO much better to traverse the world.

(For those that don't know what a Ferrystone is, it's a kind of Fast Travel in DD.)

Bitterblack Isle is awesome.

Anyway, gonna stop gushing about this game, and ask you what YOU think.

Kazenji
Never played this one when it was released for the PS3 & 360, Might get it for the PC if i run it.

Jmanghan
It adds new DA-exclusive content, and it feels just like DS this time around.

The difficulty, even on normal mode has been raised TREMENDOUSLY.

You will die, a lot.

Even on higher levels.

Jmanghan
So, apparently, from what I'm hearing, they're saying a sequel is definitely possible if both games do well enough on PC.

EVERYONE BUY DD NOW.

No, but honestly, in my experience, this game destroyed Skyrim, in every way.

The map is friggen gigantic, there's Fast Travel now, a new area to explore.

The new Dark Souls vibe is done really REALLY well.

Plus, HD Textures help the game looks its best.

The only game that can compete with this game in terms of Boss Battles, is Shadow of the Colossus. Yes, I said that.

I've beaten Shadow of the Colossus, love the game to pieces, and while that game is better then this, I've never had this much fun in a boss battle.

Your enemies are strategic, and know when they're outmatched. Some of them will run away, while some just take to the air, and land powerful blows on you.

This game is a masterpiece.

Jmanghan
...Best Final Boss fight....

...ever.

I've done Final Bosses before, I've beaten MGR.

MGR has NOTHING!!!! on this game.

In terms of a Final Boss, I mean.

One Big Mob
The Final Boss wasn't even a real boss fight...

Also "new Dark Souls Vibe"?

Also "new Dark Souls Vibe"? I'm not talking FINAL final.

Just... Final.

Every second difficulty level in Dark Arisen, including Easy and Normal, have been ramped up in difficulty.

If you didn't like the original, there's a chance you might be a big fan of this one.

There's a new area styled somewhat after Dark Souls, you can't speak on it unless you've experienced it, trust me.

One Big Mob
I've beaten the game on hard as well as Bitterblack though that just goes to normal difficulty by default. Hell I've just about platinumed the game.

And Bitterblack is old and doesn't really feel like Dark Souls, especially when everything takes so long to kill. It's got that depressing feel I guess, but that's about it.

But everyone has their own opinion.

How bout that sequel?

I can't wait to see the mods you can get on the PC version.

Jmanghan
Has anyone played the PC Version yet?

I heard they removed the Berserk outfits.

R.I.P. DD Guts.

Update for you, Kazenji.

Pretty much any machine in recent years can run DD, a Windows Vista laptop could probably run DD. You'd be doing yourself a monumental disservice not at least trying it.

Edit: Hopefully more mods will come out soon, I want a ****ing lightsaber.

The battle against Grigori (The Dragon)

The Lost
I just beat Dark Souls 3 so I will likely return to DDDA soon. It's honestly one of my all-time favorites. I never beat it on console and I grabbed it on steam recently so I could play it on PC. It looks great.

I wish we got DDO here in North America, though. I would've loved that.

Jmanghan
We might get a sequel if the game does well enough on PC. Was explicitly stated by Capcom themselves.

The Lost
Really? In that case, it's looking far from bad then...

So what, it's like Dark Souls with stripped down Devil May Cry gameplay?

Tzeentch
Watch a video or read a review and find out.

cdtm
No video's going to give you a feel for gameplay. And reviewers are generally good for "curb appeal" ratings and not much else..

Best source of info's always going to be from affectionado's/word of mouth.

Adam Grimes
Best source of info is playing it yourself. And it's a game you can get pretty cheap nowadays.

cdtm
Bought it last night. Despite the negative things I've heard about it's simplistic combat system.

Only reason I asked here first, is because I know there's gamers into Platinum Games, Ninja Gaiden, and Souls. You know, good stuff. (As opposed to games like God of War, which I enjoy, but recognize isn't very good mechanically. Not like Ninjw Gaiden Black or Bayonetta).

I dunno who told you it was "simplistic".

The Assassin Class is anything BUT simplistic.

Magick Archer, Mystic Knight.

This game's depth is crazy.

DMC has excellent Hack-n-Slash combat.

However, Dragon's Dogma combines DMC with SoTC, also combined with a very deep RPG progression system, and a flexible class system.

I don't think there is a single game that gives you the same awesome feel as this game does.

This was a highly overlooked game that rivaled dark souls and elder scrolls at the time. It didn't copy other RPGs at the time, it did its own thing and was unique.

Well, on the PS3 and 360, it struggled to say at 30FPS, in this game, it's locked at 60FPS, while also getting a complete remaster.

They're also fixing a few issues, like adding fast travel, and making the map a bit more populated.

The graphics will be fairly improved, AFAIK.

I guess they're bringing it back to compete with all the new Open-World games like Witcher 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition, Breath of the Wild, Skyrim for PS4, etc.

And if they fix the issues with it, they might be able to pull it off, I still enjoyed it a lot more then Skyrim.

Jmanghan
I started playing my PS3 copy again, and I really do think the combat system alone is enough to put it above Skyrim (in my book), but it's not just that.

The monster designs, weapon and armor designs, the pawn system (even if they do talk too much).

Jmanghan
Jesus that battle in Bluemoon Tower against that Griffin was amazing.

I also accidentally ran into a cockatrice in Soulflayer Canyon, it was an amazing battle.

One subtle feature I loved about this game was the inclusion of capes, it irked me so much in Skyrim that I couldn't put a cape on and roam the world with a flowing cape like a bad-ass, this game filled that void.

There is a way to exploit him, buy plenty of stamina replenishers, and grab his very back leg and hang on, then just hack away.

Its better if you have holy weapons, since his elemental weakness is holy.

Its not worth it reviving your pawns, they may help, but in the end, they die so quick that it doesn't even matter.

What is up with this escort mission? Those are supposed to be the boring farmable quests, you're not expecting to encounter a damned boss level dragon. confused

I had to fight a Griffin and a group of Bandits at once.

Then later on down the line, a cyclops followed me fo where the Drake was and an epic battle ensued between me and my three pawns, an armored cyclops, a drake, and a bunch of hobgoblins and goblins.

Enemies don't fight each other like in Skyrim or Dragon Age though sad

Jmanghan
Okay, I forgot about this, if you take a patrolling guard with you to a battle, they will fight the enemies, and the enemies will fight them, so thats kinda cool and immersive.

Although enemies can hurt each other.

cdtm
Second trek to the shadow fort, I just ran like heck and hoped they'd keep up.

Surprisingly, it worked. smile

And then I cleared out the hobgoblins and saved with the drake right in front of me. Want to try killing the thing, but at level 24 it's hard to keep from getting one shot killed..

cdtm
Yeah, ain't happening. I grabbed the damn things heart, downed some vim, and spammed away Scarlet Kisses, and didn't even move the first life bar a tick.

I read someone killed it at level 25, only one level above me, but he already had Masterful Kill and Fivefold Flurry, a bunch of augments I don't have, and a rust bow.

Seemed kind of op for a level 25 to me, but I guess it's possible.. Others are saying once you hit 30, a drake's too easy.

No way I can do it at present.

Gonna see about pawning up some ice boon, and maybe see if 100 kisses is available yet (And if not, I'll get full bend to drop that bastard out of the sky..)

Contrary fo popular belief, its not completely skill-based, progression is a big deal.

Almost got the drakes first bar down to a quarter, so that's progress.

Not sure if it's the Mighty Bend I purchased or the team of mages/sorcerers, though.

But I decided to head back on foot to gear up better, and kind of ruined my goal of beating the drake at level 24 by overshooting the path and ending up in conqueror's sanctuary. I just HAD to tackle those captive cyclops.

And then I found the tomb of the unknown traveler right next door. That thing wasn't so bad, but getting that last disc on its foot was a *****.

There is a sword in the stone at the Tomb of the Unknown Traveler, its not just an Excalibur easter egg, you will get a good sword from it, "Eden's Warden" (If you're lucky). It's random what sword you'll get, but if you get Eden's Warden, and you or your main pawn is a sword-based class, give them it, it's crazy good for early-game.

Go to Gran Soren and look for Fournival, a fat bald rich guy with a mustache wearing a yellow robe, he'll either be in the Noble Quarter where his house is in the morning, or during mid-day, he'll be at the Black Cat.

He sells buffs, purchase (at least) 24 Conqueror's Periapts, and 24 Angel's Periapts, as well as (at least) 12 Salomet's Secrets. These buffs stack up to 4 times, so chug them down by 4's.

Make sure to optimize your skills, Hundred Kisses and Mighty Bend are a must.

Stack up on tons of healing items, Potent Greenwarish is my highest recommendation to you at your current level.

Make sure you have decent equipment that has been upgraded to AT LEAST 1 star, upgrading is important, and killing a Drake will allow you to have a chance to Dragonforge your gear, which is the best upgrade you can get till rarifying at BBI. (Dragonforging can only be done if your equipment has at least 1 star.)

Use Mighty Bend while he is flying on his heart to ground and stagger him.

If you really can't beat him after all this, best advice is to stack up on throwblasts. You will only throw the throwblast in the direction your character is facing, so make sure you are facing the Drake's heart when you do this, and make sure you know you can hit it, no need to waste a throwblast on an unsure throw.

cdtm
Thanks, I'll give it a shot. thumb up

Also trying to use night buffs.

I guess my problem is how they calc damage.. My attack must be too low, so guessing my pawns did almost all the damage thus far.

Tbh, I might not even bother.. It was a self imposed challenge based on hearing lower level character did it, but I'm also hearing even level 40 physical types can struggle. So guessing a lot of these lower level triumphs involves cheesing by either relying on pawns, blast arrows, buffs, or a friend lending a higher tier weapon, that says almost everyone who beat it with an assassin has an angle they're not talking much about and sort of defeat the purpose of a challenge.

Might still trek to the wall and take your advice just to see what happens though. (Haven't even met the duke yet, for fear of closing off side quests.)

I mean, scarlet kissing the heart did NOTHING. At all.

cdtm
Got the flaming sword, btw. thumb up

That golem fight was really something. Probably hit that at just the right level to make it a bit challenging, without being frustratingly difficult.

Love how you run into this stuff just wandering around. Way more fun then Skyrim, that's for sure.

I'm telling you, you could be level 5, and the tactic I told you would work, I just gave that advice to my level 25 Assassin friend and watched him personally take down a Drake on stream.

You'll also want sorcerer pawns with high magick attack.

I can't really imagine a level 40 physical-based character struggling even slightly against the Drake.

Earliest I killed him WITHOUT buffs was level 29. On another playthrough, I killed him again, at level 30. I had to heal a lot, sure, but this is the only way to fully upgrade your shit pre-Dragon fight.

That was as a Mystic Knight, btw, which means I only got 1 single point of strength per level up, which also means my strength gains (as a physical type, nonetheless), were very, very bad, which made my overall attacks not hit nearly as hard as if I picked an Assassin.

If you get those buffs I suggested, you will destroy him, also, switch your skills to Hundred Kisses while grabbing onto his heart, then chug down 4 Conqueree's Periapts and Liquid Vim, you will destroy him so fast your mouth will drop.

If you just want Dragonforged equipment (and you do, trust me), you can just shoot an a maker's finger at him and OHKO him. Maker's Finger is a OHKO for every monster, including bosses. They only things it can't kill are the Unique BBI Bosses, like Death.

The Drake is also weak to Ice Weapons AND Ice Spells. When he is staggered and a sorcerer casts the Ice Spikes, it will deal incredible damage, and will sometimes take out an entire health bar on it's own.

This is the last tips I can give ya, mate, Good Luck.

Yeah, I agree, there isn't as much as Skyrim, but it feels like there doesn't have to be, because the world and exploration in itself is so gratifying and interesting.

Yeah, there is the dragon forging.

So wait, you were a level 29 mystic knight, and you were doing damage? Did you have cold affinity?

If you could do straight damage, I have to seriously rethink my gear loadout. It's ether that, or I keep running in to bugged drakes (It happens.. And nearly every time I uselessly spammed the heart, it met those conditions that triggers it.

There's also the fact I'm hanging on to the heart while it's flying.. Wonder if that could trigger a bug or simply not be possible to hurt while airborn, because most times the things grounded in videos, and the wiki flat out states it takes more damage on its side....)

It does, thats not what I meant, lol. You climb on while it's grounded and on it's side, and you will deal tons of damage.

There is no bug like that. Certain classes have augments that allow you to lose less stamina when climbing on a monster.

Jmanghan
Ice Spells are absolutely devastating when its on its side, you are almost guaranteed to take down more then half a health bar.

cdtm
Definately been glitching.

My overall strength level is 1100 something (Haven't changes out my armor since day 1, so likely underleveled).

Dragons defense is 400.

I noticed just running back and forth under the drake attacking the heart, I was whittling it's health down.. Took off an entire bar doing it

Another moment, it seemed to get stuck in one spot.. Nothing I did was dropping it.

I still haven't implemented throwblasts and stuff, but I wanted to test if I could even do physical damage on my own. Now I know I can, unless I can't. thumb up

Elemental ice weapons will be devastating against him though, but you gotta find where those are.

That's the thing, I was using ice boon and conquerer's thingee, and spamming didn't do a thing. thumb up

I've heard worse.. One guy was complaining about shooting the heart with ice affinity explosive arrows and not doing anything. It's accepted pure melee class is a "when it works" option (They also claim staggering helps, so I'll try a few full bends to the head if it happens again.)

And nearly every time this happens, the drakes flying in the air while I'm clinging to it, so I think that may be a key.. They probably didn't program it too well for that kind of scenerio, of someone grabbing on and riding it for minutes at a time..

No question whatsoever I can inflict damage if it's grounded, like after a fall from the sky.

I had a level 23 friend use 4 conquerer's periapts and destroy him very quickly.

Its not a "when it works" option, your game is just glitched, no offence.

cdtm
Whoops, was looking at my stamina. My strength level is 367.

cdtm
And that's with bloodlust.

312 at base as of now.

Tried going to Fournival for more of those conquerer's buffs, but he only gave me the Escort Duty quest. Which I failed by stepping outside accidentially. And since the game auto saves when you do that, I'm out one quest.

cdtm
Anyways, I finally gathered all the stuff, and it works like a charm. Haven't quite gotten the drake, but that's only because I need to clear out those goblins first. Just not this session.

Feels kind of like cheating though. But facing down 400 defense, with sub 400 attack even with night buffs, I probably would need to be a sorcerer spamming ice spells to solo without buffs.. smile

This one guy claims he had a level 25 assassin with vocation 9 skills, plus Warrior Clout, and he creamed the drake. Is that even possible..? Vocations take a pretty long time to level.. I'd say no less then 2-3 levels per upgrade, and 1-10 is usually spent on the core fighter/strider/mage..

If you kill lower xp enemies, like spiders and rabbits, it will level up your vocations up faster.

Vocations aren't based on XP, they are based on kills.

cdtm
Is that so..

Damn, in a way it kind of penalize's you for shooting for the biggest dogs in the game. laughing

Makes leveling vocation a lot easier though..

Aaaaand, done.

Not exactly what I'd call easy, because didn't buy defense buffs (Didn't want to TOTALLY cheese this), and relied almost exclusively on melee attacks (The camera angles are... not good. Xbox Ninja Gaiden was bad, and this is somehow even worse.)

Also only had one liquid vim, and few stamina restoratives.

My pawns were also completely useless.. I bought ice affinity for my main pawn, and disabled every other skill but cure, and the bastard never buffed me once. So I left him and the other pawns to die. thumb up

Which did make things a lot more complicated when the goblins started respawning.. Ehh, maybe fighting at night wasn't such a good idea, seeing the skill buffs left me five points shy of damaging the drake without the strength buffing items. Pointess really, and on the downside there's the goblin respawning, plus it's harder to track the drake.

Jmanghan
Congratulations, my man.

Out of all the first kill experiences, the Drake is way up there.

cdtm
Thanks. smile

It was dicey in the end, I won't lie. But when I got that opening, held on to it's chest with a death grip, and spammed away like there's no tommorow (You died for a noble cause, pawn in the dragons claw), and saw just one circle left, nothing on earth was gonna stop me from finishing the beast.

I was just running back and forth under it, swinging away blindly, eating healing stuff and emperer's whatchmacallits like candy.

And then had to avoid the goblin hordes just to collect my loot (They really could have finished me then), before ferrystoning away at the last minute.

it.was.AWESOME.

it.was.AWESOME. Yeah, and this game is filled with stuff like that, I feel like this game is way better then Skyrim, and has better combat then Dark Souls.

I'll tell you one thng, the end-gwme of this and BBI have much better stories then Skyrim, for sure.

cdtm
You know what, I take it back about fighting at night.

Not much cooler then the dead of night being broken by a firebreathing dragon. Very atmospheric.

cdtm
They already have a pc port, don't they?

Are the remasters supposed to top it? Or simply match it, by cleaning up the visuals and fov?

Just got me and my pawn to max level, now all thats left is to deck my pawn out in some amazing gear.

We have a release date: October 3rd.

Gotta be honest, looks less like a remaster and more like a port.. Nothing there says "Must own new experience"..

But I think this is the last sales test before they finally move on to Dragon's Dogma 2.

The Lost
Just started replaying on PC. Yet again.

Yeah, I agree with that. I think it's yet another probe to see how it can do on the console market. They said they'd seriously consider a sequel if DDDA performed well sales-wise on PC and it was their fastest selling PC title of all-time.

What I think? I think DD2 is already in development but this is to see if they should release in NA/EU markets as opposed to Japan exclusively (like with DDO).

Jmanghan
I also think its because Skyrim was just brought back to PS4, and they're bringing DDDA back because of that. I enjoyed this game MUCH more then Skyrim, even if Skyrim is more "polished", it wasn't NEARLY as fun.

Jmanghan
In an ideal world, I believe we would get: The original title screen music, the Berserk armor and weapons back, being able to place as many portcrystals as we want, and being able to purchase them during our first playthrough. All mixed with the changes that were added to the PC version. You wanna make a remaster? Add those things to the game, it would further increase the replayability and make the game much better.

Yep, me too. Thought it was much more interesting. The soundtrack was better, the combat was better, the story was better, etc.

I mean, it's a smaller world but I loved it much more. Even the general mythos captivated me much more than Skyrim. Don't get me wrong, I still love Skyrim. It's a classic, for me and likely many others. I just think DDDA is tragically underlooked, underplayed, and underrated.

Jmanghan
3 days, ya'll.

Jmanghan
Game's been released, however I didn't get my pre-order bonus, which is stupid.

Anyway, what do you guys think so far? As good as the PC version or no?

Laziest port this gen, it sounds like. Yup... But buying it means we may get a sequel, or better, Dragon's Dogma online in the west.

cdtm
That's the only reason I'm hoping it sells.

Guardian Heroes was promised a sequel if it sold well, and that was a much much better port with loads of extras, online and everything.

That was around 2008, and still no sequel, so guess it didn't sell well (I doubt best sellers drop down to a buck 35)

How is everyone doing with their new playthroughs? I just "opened" Everfall up. Grinding a bit for BBI. Went Assassin for most of the game, gonna switch to MK.

It's bad enough that it isn't 60FPS and there's no new content, when they hyped this game up like no one's business.

cdtm
Hey, at least it's not Overwatch. Worst game ever that proves there's a sucker born every minute (Like Dragon Ball Super for anime assholes)

Swordplay is far more interesting to me then gunplay.

cdtm
Biggest problem with this game is the ladders to some areas are really hard to notice...This one in the city is obscured by the edge, so you'd have to notice it from the other side of a pit, and they blend right into the background colors.

Been taking a break since clearing up the story quests, but before seeing the king.

Half those board quests, I have no idea what I'm doing. And worse yet, I added a few Bitterblack board quests, which are probably uncompleteable now and taking up space.

Considering just moving along the story, but I'm afraid of locking out some quests. Happened once already, before visiting the witch I took the caravan, and got a big red fail.

It sucks the way they built it.

The only board quests I like are the post-game ones, very fun.

Jmanghan
Used the save transfer to put my save data from my PS3 onto my PC.

All shall bow before my pawn "Zoth", the legendary dimensional warrior!

If ya'll want him, his owner is "Xioth", he's a level 200, and he's a fighter decked out in maxed out Hellfire equipment.

Jmanghan
Okay I got it wrong, his owner's name is Zenlock.

I need to get a second Hellfire Set.

Jmanghan
I'm getting that Dogma itch again, I bought this game for a lot of people on my steam Friend's List, as well as a KMC member here named "Total Warrior".

I figure "eh, it'll be fun watching them build up their pawns".

Jmanghan
WHAT'S NEXT? WITCHER? GTA V? ALL BETS ARE ON MAN, WE COULD GET LITERALLY ANYTHING ON THIS SYSTEM!!!

Jmanghan
You need to acknowledge this you ****s.

Also the game is going to be $29.99, but it's unknown if there'll be a physical release in the west, which is strange, because this is by far one of Capcom's most popular series'.

Jmanghan
Holy shit the rate it's going, it's looking like Dogma's switch trailer might Surpass MK11's.

MK11 gets maybe 10k views every day since, but Dogma is more like 30k per day, yesterday it had 166k?

As I write this it has 192k, whereas MK11 has 267k

I'm so happy this game is getting the recognition it deserves, I'm actually emotional, lol.

Khazra Reborn
They need to just make a sequel. There's no point in continually porting a 7 year old game. Either support the IP, or don't, Capcom has taken plenty of these stupid test runs, with re-releasing this game.

Do you know there was not 1, but 2 DD games that we never got here? 2!!

Dragon's Dogma: Quest which seemed to be a tactical RPG, and Dragon's Dogma Online, which played exactly like Dark Arisen, pawn and all, but it was an MMO sad
