This movie is making some buzz among critic circles. Has an 87% Rotten Tomatoes score.

I saw it. It was cringey at parts (in a bad way...like watching your autistic cousin try to hit on your attractive cousin). It is like Eggers tried too hard.

There are some good parts.

Also, Eggers likes naked children. Or he hates them. Can't tell.

To me, it is not worth watching. Concept is great. Wonderful. But executed terribly.

Enjoy it if you want to cringe at "trying too hard" edgy horror.

A lot of horror movies suffer from "trying to hard" these days. Fake frights & unnecessary gore seem to replace a good storyline these days.

Impediment
I've heard good things, but also that it's nothing very epic like they hype leads it to be.

Patient_Leech
Yeah, I've heard of this one and want to see it at some point.

I think I read that Stephen King supposedly claimed it scared the crap out him. You know how those sorts of endorsements are, though... often times it's just hype.

quanchi112
I may see this tomorrow. Hmmmm. I feel like I'll also be disappointed. The one review said it was good but more of a psychological thriller not a horror film.

|King Joker|
Just saw it... I'd give it a 7/10.

Like has been said - great concept, but the execution was... not great. Definitely creepy/disturbing at parts, but overall... *shrug*

Oh that's not creepy at all! Making a comment to something he volunteered is making conversation. You dated an underage girl. Creep. All out of your own mouth.

dynamix
seen it not too bad. Cinematography was awesome some of the shots were very unnerving. The only negative i found was the heavy dialect. There were often times when i just can't understand or hear exactly what they are saying lol.

Khazra Reborn
I thought this movie was great, IMO the atmosphere and feel of the film was scary, as opposed to the "jump" shit most people look for when you go watch something like Paranormal Activity.

BruceSkywalker
might pass and wait a while when nobody else is in the theater lol

This is a movie thread & you're comment wasn't focused on the movie but the young age of the poster.
Then you try & hide behind that you're concerned he's doing something behind his father's back?

Would his father approve of a 36 yr old male stranger on the Internet being " concerned" about his son?

Spin it anyway you want dude, I'm like the 4th poster on this board that's noticed your creepy obsession with the younger males here.

And keep ignoring the fact, Quan. I never dated an under age girl.
She was 18 months past the age of consent & 6 months shy of legally being considered an adult. Spin it anyway you want. You're still wrong.

Back on topic. Saw the witch. Terrible film.

Oh, right, forgot about that. They mumbled and muttered too much and I couldn't hear them at times. It got stupid ridiculous at times.

This is something that has been happening quite a bit in the last 10 years of movies. I notice the mumbling and muttering happening more and more. In old school movies, if a line could not be properly heard, it would be considered poor acting and poor audio. That limited the types of conversations that could be had. And part of that was due to the distortion and noise in the audio recording back then. But now people are muttering and it cannot readily be understood. It is considered "cool" and "artistic" I suppose. I have to subtitle movies I watch almost all of the time because there are at least 1 or 2 scenes where someone mumbles and I can't understand shit, captain.

This movie suffered horribly from mumbly syndrome.

Whenever actors mumble in movies, I want to ask them, "Whatchoo talkin' about over there? Hmmm? Is it a secret? Wanna share with everyone? Hmm? You like your secrets? Bless you."

Kazenji
Noticed this one is coming out soon for Australia, Most likely get a limited released.

Zack M
I thought it was just OK. Some really cool shots and the atmosphere was creepy.

wakkawakkawakka
Not as good as "It Follows" IMO but a decent period piece. Also I found that the main female is 19 no expression which makes the ending less disturbing I guess

quanchi112
It stunk.

The Nuul
I wanted to see this but i keep hearing bad things about it. I think that it will be boring and not very scary

Robtard
Forgot were I read it, but it's supposed to capture 17th century colonial America fairly accurately, at least more accurate than ever depicted on film before. Find that intriguing, alone with being a horror-film buff.

I don't really have anything bad to say about it. It's brilliantly done. I mean, superb direction, almost Cronenberg auteur skill. Makes me want to know who this director is so I can follow his films. I wouldn't call it scary, but I honestly don't think it's really meant to be. It's more of a horror-drama with some surreal horror imagery. I think it's not going too far to compare it to The Shining, and that's a huge compliment. It's really good. Definitely worth a watch. Several child-actor performances that are impressive. I had trouble understanding some of the dialogue, but that's about it. Also I might have liked a little more ambiguity with the ending, but it's still really, really good.

I give this high praise. Definitely give it a watch and let me know what you think.

Arachnid1
This wasn't bad. Good atmosphere, and good period piece.

Two negatives though:
1. Wtf were they even saying half the time. I had to turn on subtitles halfway through.
2. You barely get to see the witch. There are a couple of good set pieces, but most of the time is the characters going about their daily lives. Not all that scary.

BruceSkywalker
will prolly buy the blu ray soon and judge for myself

It was more the dialect that was difficult to understand for me, not so much that they were mumbling. I wish I had had subtitles, but it honestly didn't affect my enjoyment of the film much.

Definitely. It's great filmmaking, plain and simple, but I can see how it wouldn't appeal to some who want f#cking jump scares or torture porn. There is none of that. The film is a little slow to get going, but once it absorbs you in I think it pays off pretty damn well.

Just saw this. I thought it was great. It's not a frightening film, but very unsettling instead. I'm surprised that people thought it was executed poorly. Honestly, the execution, I felt, was amazing. The cinematography was top notch. And the acting was pretty great too, even from the little kids.

My only problem was, as some people already mentioned, it is a bit hard to understand the characters do to the archaic dialect. Otherwise, It's a great film though one I wouldn't recommend to everyone.

Edit: Also there was one scene near the end that really hurt the whole movie. It's the scene where the witch turn around a give off a stereotypical cackle. I almost thought I had been pranked.
