I think he was kinda psychic, but I also think the character himself tried to attribute this to just getting lucky.

They should have named him Richard though. Dick Gently.

He didn't in the books. But I am getting the impression the books have very little to do with the show.

Just watched the first four episodes last night. Completely insane and amazingly fun.
