What are they?

Starting off i'd say one of the most important is age.
The longer some shit's been around, the more credence ppl are going to give it, and the more time ppl will spend talking about how its totally fake.

Also...

A creation myth (where we came from)

At least one god (someone to pray to, praise when things go right, say has been disappointed when things go wrong)

Rules (what the text writers want ppl to do/how they want them to behave)

An afterlife (where ppl go if they follow the rules)

A bad afterlife (where ppl go if they dont follow the rules)

A common enemy (someone to unite against)

Obviously i'm missing some, didnt elaborate enough, or got some different from how you'd explain them.
So, go:

I don't think you have to have a Hell. The Karma scenario seems to be compelling to some.

Not sure i agree overall, but personally i AM a big believer that ppl usually get what they deserve in the end so cool.

socool8520
I'm not a believer in the afterlife so I prefer justice on this plane of exicstence personally.

Quick response.

Just happened to see the reply.

Transcendent ideals aren't always religious

A good/successful religion needs one regardless.

The circle of life is the GOAT of religious doctrines and isn't remotely transcendent.

I'd say a big part of success as far as religion is gathering followers.

Here's a link that breaks it down by poulation, too long to copy/paste:

There's definitely a monopoly by a select few religions.
Those have heavens/hell, even Hiduism.

I'd rather focus on the actual subject i asked about and not circular conversation/Youtube links or whatever rocadong is going with,

but

this is the internet so not holding my breath.

^^^ The best religions are those without specific gods to worship

That source seems pretty sketchy

"Christianity is the oldest and the most popular religion on this planet. It was founded by Jesus Christ in somewhere around 27 AD. Christianity is also the oldest Abrahamic Religion."

Also IIRC Islam is the fastest growing religion unfortunately.

Rockydonovang
ooh, another religion that's an order of magnitude better than real world religions:

^^^Well their opinions may be contrary to yours (and mine), but i'm more interested in the numbers themselves.

1 - The main character/idea/theme would be a phenomenon of great power.

2 - Wrap it in stories inspiring awe, fear and hope. Include tales of individuals dealing with this phenomenon so people have characters they can more easily relate to.

3 - An *inspired* set of rules on how the masses should interact with this phenomenon, with each other, and in general how to live.

riv6672
I think that last may be the one that cant be omitted, no matter the religion.

Yeah that's definitely questionable. Judaism is the oldest Religion in the world and the first Abrahamic Religion. And yeah, Islam is the fastest growing Religion due to birth rates.

Treat each other, or how the religion's representatives want ppl to behave.
