Who is a better villain and why; Thanos or Darth Sidious?

Can't really compare both villains. Both are the top guns in their respective areas.
You can see Sedious as the snake. He was the lucifer of SW. His treachery and deceptiveness are without comparison. He was very powerful too, and very well feared in his later days by even Darth Vader. He ruled with iron fist and was indeed an Emperor.
Thanos on the other hand is destruction; he is Death's hand. As Gamora said, he wiped and conquered entire worlds. Although he is depicted as a villain, his intentions in the MCU are pure and could even sympathize with him in a way. Thanos' biggest attribute is clearly wiping half a universe, a feat no other villain to my knowledge has achieved...not even Sidious.
Conclusion, Sidious is just pure evil whilst Thanos the embodiment of Death.
gauntlet o doom
I guess, it'll depend on what constitutes a "better" villain - one whose motivations you understand or one whom you want to cheer against.

Thanos easily...
Thanos has been a complete success of a villain on a level that Palpatine has never been; Thanos defeated all of Earth's mightiest heroes and killed off half of the universe...
Palpatine has absolutely nothing on that...

Look how the haters have come full circle to try to sit at the table of Thanos.
I told you so years ago. You should have listened.

I don't hate...
I tell the truth regardless of my feelings for a character...
As regards the OP, Thanos>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Palpatine.
Its simply a fact...

Darth Sidious has better meme value.

Thanos IMO. Fact of the matter is that, at the end of the day, Sidious is just one of a long line of power-hungry Sith Lords. Granted, more successful than most, but still very stereotypical in many regards. Thanos just had a lot more depth to him as a character IMO. Which says a lot, considering their comparative overall screen time.
Darth Thor
^ Which is why Vader became a far more interesting villain when he became a redeemable character in ROTJ.
That said this comparison should be with Star Wars most Iconic Villain Vader. But in typical Quanchi fashion he wants to compare the most Powerful and In Universe Top Dogs of each franchise.

Vader? Vader was the face of the Empire he ain't the main antagonist.
I agree, Vader got most of the attention from ANH to ROTJ and in a way is the 'iconic villain', but in the end he is just another of Sidious' puppet.
And it would all depend on your definition of 'villain', cause to me Vader was but the Emperor's hand and not really a villain of his own.
quanchi112
I gave you your wish. The big bad of the MCU is far superior to Vader in every sense of the word.

Nope, Thanos lost to SG...
Here's proof:
NotAllThatEvil
I voted for sidious because his plan wasn't nonsensical rubbish and he was the most powerful being in his universe. Thanos needed special jewelry to get that title an his plan/motivation was moronic
NotAllThatEvil
Thanos is clearly stronger than the star wars universe, but that doesn't make him a better villain. He's a complete idiot who bumbles his way to power. Unlike sidious who spent years/decades carefully planning and manipulating his way
NotAllThatEvil
He would need the stones, bit that's not the argument here. The only smart thing thanos did was ask someone to build a gauntlet for him so the stones wouldn't kill him. Everything else was just punch people until a stone falls out so he can wish half the universe away. Even if sidious only made it because of the jedi's pride, he was still smart enough to use it to turn Anakin and control the Senate. Thanos can snap his fingers and turn the universe into a bubble, him being stronger than sidious isn't the issue. The issue is that his half population resource management plan is so dumb that my 12 year old brother could see the flaws in it, he has absolutely no tact or strategy, and that the only reason he survived to the end of the movie was becaus starlord was an even bigger idiot. He got out played by 15 year old Peter Parker, despite having like three of the stones at the time.
NotAllThatEvil
Again, just because thanos is strong doesn't mean her a good Gilliam. If that's all you have then this conversation is obviously pointless
NotAllThatEvil
did not have other men secure his power.
-had gamora find the soul gem
-had his cronies go after the time stone, and fail
-had his cronies go after the vision stone, and fail
- have dwarfs make the only thing that allows him to survive two infinity stones.
Hmmmm, what did thanos actually do that wasn't punching?
NotAllThatEvil
At least sidious had a plan. Besides the gauntlet, all of thanos's plans consisted of "Go place, get stone." And I like how you still haven't even tried to defend thanos's ridiculous end goal was.

NotAllThatEvil
I know what he was trying to do, but that solution is the equivalent of digging a hole to China to get faster take out. It's nonsensical
Darth Thor
Sidious was clearly the superior schemer and manipulator.
He didnt Just use his powers to shoot people with lightning or cut them with lightsabers. In fact we hardly ever saw him in direct combat at all.
No he used his powers to turn people evil, to manipulate an entire political system in his favour, and to build weapons of mass destruction. As a result he literally ruled the Galaxy for over 2 decades.
So yes I agree, though no where near as fleshed out a personality, he was certainly a more effective overall villain.

What did Thanos do that didnt simply require minions brute strength?
Psychotron
Sidious. His story was built up in 6 movies far more effectively than Thanos' in the trillion Marvel movies.
Also, Sidious' motivations make sense. Thanos' are completely retarded and full of plot holes.
