Most of the New Gods are awfully designed, horrible mistakes, tbh.

You also have to take into consideration the times. Just look at early Fantastic Four, they were just plain ugly. New Gods were amazing by comparison, the detail in the god tech alone such as the Whiz Wagon was amazing.
