Probably.

Is this a joke? How on earth are you supposed to enforce a lawsuit against a sovereign nation? Who would collect it, and what stops China from laughing it off?

As far as I understand the options an American court has in regards to a foreign government are severely limited, so it's unlikely anything will come of that. In theory you could bring a dispute to the international court of justice, but that requires consent from the parties, and neither the US nor China recognize the courts authority.

And for damn good reason too. It's not like he keeps talking about China
just for shits and giggles. China is the greatest threat to our status as the world's dominant power. He's been warning everyone about China for years and too many idiots just scoffed at his warnings. Very few took them seriously.

LMAO@ anyone who still thinks Russia is a bigger threat to the United States than China is.

I would agree, China is a much more potent threat to the US's hegemonic status. As someone not that heavily invested in the US, I see that with some ambivalence myself.

It opens up an interesting question about whether the way that Trump approaches it is effective at counteracting China's rise. Some may argue that the way he does it, actually hastens the decline of the US's status and pushes the world community to embrace China faster than they would have otherwise. Of course him and his supporters would reject that as nonsense.

Another interesting aspect is in how far China's rise is really due to the United States outsourcing a lot of its value production to China. This is not to say that the US could halt it easily at this point, just a historic question.

I would say that some of the reason why Trump talks about China is not because of this threat China poses, but rather it's value as an enemy to achieve his personal political goals.

This thread is misleading. We are not suing a China

Missouri is.

Artol
Not just Missouri, apparently there's also a few private citizens that are suing China in US courts. But it seems unlikely to go anywhere.

Lot's of potential lawsuits are only put forward because the claimant wants the accused party to come back with an offer before it goes to a hearing/court. Is this what's happening here? Threatening China with a whole tangled pile of legal wires and leads in the hopes of easing the debt to China or better import/export rates or something like that.

cdtm
"Give us better rates, and we'll drop this lawsuit you guys keep laughing over."

But no, it's nothing like that, its just a group from a state trying to get compensated for Coronavirus damages.

Doesn't really matter what it is, no international court is collecting on China unless they choose to respect the courts. Which they will not, as no court can make them.

Old Man Whirly!
Good luck with that Trump no
