Are the OT comic adaptations canon now??

I just downloaded a recently released TPB that collects the freshly reedited and recolorized original comic book adaptations of the OT movies.

But I noticed something strange- a complete lack of a "Legends" brand anywhere on the book.

so does this mean the TPB is canon?

Doubtful, all they did was recolorize, they did it in 97' too and there's plenty of SW works that doesn't have the Legends brand on it.

Because I'm skimming through my archive now, and all of the EU comics I've looked at so far that were republished by Disney after 2014 have a Legends brand.

The Crimson Empire 1 & 2 series(3rd series has the label though), Shadows of the Empire, Lost Tribe of the Sith, Boba Fett Omnibus, EotE and Salvage, some others.

All 3 volumes of Crimson Empire have the brand.
Both volumes of Shadows of the Empire have the brand.
Lost Tribe of the Sith has the brand.
All of the Boba Fett books that have been republished so far (including Enemy of the Empire and Salvage) have the brand.

I can post scans if you want me to, but I literally just looked at all of the comics you mentioned before posting.

From what I have seen, ALL of the EU stuff that has been republished since 2014 carries the Legends banner.. But the movie adaptations TPB referenced in the OP does not.

Hm...well I guess some sites have some updating to do then.

Thats why I feel like the movie adaptations TPB not carrying the banner is kind of telling. Seems like the intent might be for it to be canon.

I see what you're saying, Eli. All previous EU content that Marvel has republished since 2014 does seem to be stamped with the Legends banner... But for some reason the TPB you're referencing is not.

That said, this is still a bit of a grey/contradictory area, because the individual OT adaptations were originally republished by Marvel in 2015, and did carry the Legends stamp at the time. However, they have now been re-republished in 2020, without the stamp.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love nothing more than for the adaptation's dialogue pertaining to Luke and Vader's fight in RotJ to be canon:

...But I think we'd need to have something more "official" than a lack of a banner, for it to be so. /shrug

I remember asking either Matt Martin or Pablo Hidalgo back in 2015 whether or not these comics could ever realistically be made canon. The response was basically that there were too many contradictions in the comics to ever be fully consistent with the movies, and therefore the comics should be treated as simply supplemental material.

I'd dig up the old tweet if I had the time, but that was ages ago and I'm simply not invested. As much as I'd personally love for these comics to be canon, I just don't see it happening.

It's the same with the novelsations, which is a shame because that excludes the ROTS Novelisation .

My point is just that ever since Disney took over, every EU comic that Marvel has republished has been given the Legends logo- a crystal clear statement that they are no longer canon on any level. So the fact that marvel chose to not slap a Legends banner on this TPB passively suggests that it might be canon.

Darth Thor
^ Either that or someone just couldn't be arsed with the label.
