So I finally watched this film to see what all the fuss was about and the problem is immediately clear. The film is unwatchably awful, BUT it has NOTHING whatever to do with Brie Larson or the character of Captain Marvel.
The character has a ton of potential, being an air force pilot who becomes a One-person space armada defending the universe from shapeshifting invaders. IF WRITTEN CORRECTLY, they could easily build an an entire space opera franchise on her character alone. The problem is the writers and their unbearably frustrating inability to craft a cohesive narrative or allow audience-character connectivity.
The film is a sluggish mishmash of exposition dumps and flashy setpieces that mean nothing because the context is so poorly presented. Characters just monotonously state their motivations and plot goals and then dive into the next flashy action scene before the audience can comprehend confusing AND boring mountain of exposition because the writers don't know how to make the characters engaging.
It's a painful film to watch both in terms of its own mediocrity and for Captain Marvel and Brie Larson, who is clearly deserving of a far better story and would be a wonderful addition to the Avengers if the writers didn't make her come off as annoyingly unlikeable, which again, has nothing to do with her character but rather the haphazard way in which she is presented.
I hope to see her in future MCU films, but with a far more talented and experienced screenwriter in charge of her character. I honestly feel like the writers of this movie need to read Pixar Storytelling by Glenn Movshovitz and learn the basics of storytelling, because they absolutely butchered Captain Marvel's debut imo
