UK's teachers and civil servants join mass strike on 'Walkout Wednesday'

Tens of thousands of teachers march in London
Prime Minister Sunak condemns strike
Government says big pay rises will fuel inflation
Schools shut, most trains not running

LONDON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Up to half a million British teachers, civil servants, and train drivers walked out over pay in the largest coordinated strike action for a decade on Wednesday, with unions threatening more disruption as the government digs its heels in over pay demands.

The mass walkouts across the country shut schools, halted most rail services, and forced the military to be put on standby to help with border checks on a day dubbed "Walkout Wednesday".

According to unions, as many as 300,000 teachers took part, the biggest group involved, as part of wider action by 500,000 people, the highest number since 2011, when civil servants walked out en masse.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the strikes which forced millions of children to miss school.

"I am clear that our children's education is precious and they deserve to be in school today being taught," he said.

Been strikes for 2 months. Good on them. Especially the nurses and paramedics who were promised a reward once we were through the pandemic and have been utterly shat on.

Heard the train and bus workers went on strike again today, one of the biggest.

Well, it isn't protesting against reaching kids about mutilating their bodies, but at least it's action.

Will be interesting seeing if any real change happens.

Kind of an acid test on how free the West really is.

So far it's been
Nurses
Paramedics
Firefighters
Teachers
Civil Servants
Trains

And a few others

Mostly they've been staggered on different days but this week a load of them landed on the same day which meant about 500,000 workers on the same day.

All vital jobs, do think anything will come of it?

Jaden_3.0
Not while this government's in power. And they're just hoping inflation comes down to the point where people will just give up.

But house prices have fallen 4 months in a row. The middle income folks who are mortgaged past their eyeballs with savage increases in their payments while the value of their property drops won't be happy and they're your typical Tory voter. The "I'm alright Jack" group aren't alright anymore. The only chance of action being taken on that front is because so many Tory MPs and Lords also happen to be Landlords with multiple rental properties they may end up losing money on.

Holy shit.

The US needs this.

To stop money in politics and invest in underprivileged communities and fu#king raise minimum wage, etc..

cdtm
Liberal states do it all the time, it never works in the US. Everyones replaceable, PA's have replaced doctors, adjuncts replace tenured professors, reality TV replaced script writers.

The last 75 years have been the richest in the UK trying to put the people back in there place since the creation of the welfare state and Europe Court of human rights. Thatcher was the first Nuke they used to break the unions. But, you can only keep the British divided so long and once we see it is our leaders who are the enemy, our leaders have always been smart enough to concede. From the the magna, to parliament, to abolition of poor laws, to pensions and working condions, to the NHS, they will find we don't take kindly to hard fought for rights being removed when the general populace understand that's what's happening.

Unions raise the standard of living, breaking their power hurts everyone except the richest.

See that's the thing, the current crop of leaders aren't from that pragmatic generation. They never learned how to conceed because they enjoyed excesses from their predecessors efforts.

I remember my great grandfather well, he lived with far less in his life, yet demanded nothing of anyone. He did hard work up to 98, when his body finally failed him.

By comparison we are led by toddlers refusing to share their toys.

That PM quote smacks of "Oh please! Won't SOMEONE think of the children!" and "Shut the **** up and get back to work."

There always seems to be money to spend on bloated police and military budgets, and the economy always seems to be doing well enough to give corporations and the wealthy hefty tax breaks...

...yet, as soon as working-class types demand higher wages and/or better conditions and supplies, they'd spell the end of the nation.

It really doesn't work like that. Nations can spend literally as much money as they want. Unlimited funds. The money is an illusion: they are really just taking services from their citizens. People complaining about spending don't get it. What's the worst that could happen? Debt that absolutely no one has a chance of collecting, so even the debt isn't real. The debt is to the people, the interest paid in bonds that create our retirement. We all but into this illusion that the government is a parent with a budget they have to follow, and limits on what they can do for financial reasons, and then when the people stand up and say, I will be treated better, they are accused of destroying this made up "economy" when the truth is, the economy only exists because everyone believes in it.

Go back to the first civilization, when it was just one guy saying "come live near us, and then when you pick berries, you give me some, and when i kill a deer, you'll get some, and we will protect each other." Somewhere along the way we approved a third guy who said "how about you being me all the berries and deer, and I'll give you back as much as I can after I've had enough. I can't let you eat all the berries and eat all the deer, or we won't have an economy, and somehow we all freaking went along with it. /Rant

The third parry initially provided protection laws and I frastructure and still does. But yes to a point it is an illusion.

Will probably work then, which is shit, people get used to the new-new and quickly forget the people who screwed the mover, even when they voted them in.

I hope so, they're long overdue for a kicking to the curb. I have zero faith though.

Macklemore
Kier as PM? Is it because of his brilliance? Or is it because od Tory mismanagement?
