Whenever Daniel-Day Lewis shows up on the screen (which is rarely), his characters tend to steal the show.

His role as the Native boss Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York is no exception. Plus, he's pretty nasty with a blade, tossing them like a pro

William Cutting is a WASP who dislikes immigrants, the Irish being the top of his shitlist. He challenges the leader of the Dead Rabbits, Priest Vallon (played by Liam Neeson) in a gang-on-gang brawl over who would control the Five Points. Priest is killed by Bill himself, and declares the Dead Rabbits outlawed. Despite being a racist, he is a ma of honor had had the slain Priest Vallon buried with honors and his son placed in an orphanage.

With the Civil War in its second year, Bill is in firm control of the Points. He takes on Amsterdam Vallon, son of the late Priest Vallon as his protegee. If you haven't seen this masterpiece, go on and check it out. I won't spoil it for you. Ether way, Bill is a character worthy of respect...despite the whole racist angle.
