Definitely real, they just don't get as hairy, nor do their teeth become so pronounced as seen in the movies. My uncle once fending off a pack that attacked his truck with a combination of small arms fire and hand-2-hand combat while driving close to the American/Mexican border.
Truthfully, I think something of the sort could possibly exist, just not as it's presented in the media. Maybe something man sized with dog like features, but definitely not anything like what we got in "Van Helsing" or "Underworld".
