Taxi Driver

I found a thread on the movie, but it was asking a question about the movie. So, here's the official thread.

Excellent film. Discuss.

Overrated, IMO. Climactic ending, but like a lot of Scorsese's movies, just held in too high of regard, and people are afraid to say so, in fear they'll be cast out.

I definitely agree; feel the same way towards "Raging Bull".

nooooooo

I love Taxi Driver. Great movie. One of my top 5 for sure. It's just great story telling. Instead of flashy, action paced generic drivel.......it's character driven. 90% of the flick is spent getting to know the character of Travis.....following him in his downward spiral as his outlook on life changes.

If you like explosions and a break neck pace, it's not for you. If you want to watch a flick with great character development.......showing how a normal every day guy could turn vigilante in a realistic presentation, it doesn't get any better.

the ending is a cop-out though. Bickle should have died.

It is a little slow in the first half, IMO, but I agree with ED that it's great character development. Also, I love the classic quote, "You talkin' to me?!"

Good movie, great soundtrack, good casting. But a bit overrated.

I don't think I'm one of those people.

I loved it. It may have been a little over the top, but it was cool to see that someone had the balls to go after his attacker like that! It makes me laugh.

First half was slow? It was a 2 hour long movie that could have been done in 90 minutes EASILY. Scorsese overanalyzed his own character in Bickle, and made his conflict too strong. He'll go to a porn theatre, but try and save a prostitute. He hates the government, but tries to hook up with a campaign supporter. I understand these things may be an imbalance and a result of the PTSD from 'Nam, but it should have gone one way or the other. Adopting these views, then turning them on their ear, and going out in a blaze of glory.

I tend to think the character is more memorable than the movie, because up through the last 15 minutes, it bored the hell out of me because I wasn't convinced, or sold on Bickle's stance, just his loathing. It's not so much character "development", as it is a regression, and even hardly that because he flip-flops so much throughout the movie, and it's actually his surroundings that take on the degredation trip. He's just a long for the ride, since he's consumed by it, eventually.

I saw it when I was a little girl, so I don't remember it much, but I remember really liking Jodi Foster........right? Wasn't that her?

But yeah, and I remember that scene where the guy was flexing his muscles above a burner I think....

I definetly need to watch it again.

I love this movie. One of the most well written films I've seen. If you invest in the character of Travis, and look at the film more deeply than what is shown on the surface it is a very rewarding and interesting experience. But, I like a lot of movies about a person descending into madness, one of my favorite plot devices.

you had shitty parents. Listening to Harvey Keitel advertise how a man can cum in a 12 year old girl's mouth, pussy or ass isn't exactly what I'd call family friendly entertainment.

In all fairness.........my parents were shitty too. My mother rented "I Spit on Your Grave" for me when I was 12 years old. I was a big horror fan.........she was at the video store and just grabbed it from the horror section without ever turning the box around and reading about the movie. She thought it was the normal Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St., Re-Animator, Hellraiser type movie.

A good parent would have taken a bit more time to actually learn what the movie was about before renting it for their pre-teen child.

for those who don't know........the movie's about a woman being gang raped and beaten graphicly then taking her revenge on those who assaulted her.
