I last saw it on TV years ago. No idea of the title nor the star! B/W set in 1930's America. Man, innocent bystander witnesses armed robbery in a Café. Is assumed to be implicated, captured, falesly charged, convicted and sent to prison.
Manages to escape, joins a road construction gang, works hard gets promotion. Studies for degree at night school. Becomes rich, successful and much respected. Marries. Wife discovers his past and betrays him. Sent back to prison to finish his sentence. Parole denied, sentence extended. Escapes again...spends rest of his life desparate, on the run.
Not your usual feel good movie! Anyone any ideas what is is? Help much appreciated.
