It was lame. There was no need for the demon to dupe the group into transporting him to the Abby, they spoke about where they were headed in front of him several times.
There were many plot-holes, can't recall off the top of my head, but I do remember thinking "ah, more shit" as I watched.
Maybe the demon had no idea how to navigate the forest. Remember the knights had to hire a guide?

The demon is hundreds (if not thousands) of years old and could fly. Finding a lone Abby on a mountain peak in a given area shouldn't be too hard, even if said demon was mildly retarded, which it wasn't.
Well, maybe it could only enter the abby while in guise of the girl.
