Sounds like the main character has High functioning autism with a lack of social graces. In the same vein as the Stiller, Sandberg genre. Similar to I Love You Man, in that lacks social grace to make friends.

I wonder if they address as such or that he just a bit dense and misunderstood gentle soul.
