It doesnt have to. The MCU is the biggest movie franchise of all time (box office wise). Star Wars and Harry Potter dont come close.
No one expects or ever expected DC to compete on that level. They just need to focus on making good films.
Question is can Disney bring Star Wars back to real competition again. Disney came out of the gate with TFA being massively bigger than any MCU movie, and now for Episode 9 they are competing with Aquaman
With limited thinking like this I would never want you in charge of anything. The only constant in life is change and the MCU was not always the powerhouse that it is today. You need the right people, a vision, and great films. If they want to be shit and never believe they can ascend then enjoy mediocrity.
TFA came out with a ten year gap and every Star Wars film has made over one billion save solo. I will bet you this easily beats AM. Take the bet. I know you will come up with excuses as to why you will not but Disney Star Wars is going to continue to shell out amazing stuff. Just wait.
We will see a pretty big drop off going forward I bet with MCU in regards to Box office. Of the 8 billion dollar Marvel movies 6 of them RDJ was the main character. The other 2 were Black Panther and Captain Marvel who both had other factors leading to their success.
The next Spiderman will probably do well being the first movie after Endgame but I think it will be some time before we get another big hit. Eternals, Shang Chi, Black Widow, Dr Strange 2...I doubt any of those will be big giant hits. Black Panther 2 will be I'm sure.
To answer your question the answer is probably no. DC doesnt have anyone as charasmatic or entertaining as RDJ.
The MCU was not RDJ alone. Plus it is not just about billion dollars or bust. They slowly built the MCU up and gave us plenty of worthwhile franchises. Gotg vol. 3 with Thor is going to be nuts. I love Dr. Strange and cannot wait for the sequel. Eternals yes please. Who knows when we get FF or X Men. That is always going to be in the background.
It will not be anywhere as successful especially right away but down the line who knows. For me it will never be this amazing due to Thanos but I do believe it will still be great just not as perfect as the culmination of phase 1-3.
They are close to averaging $1billion per movie. Which is unprecedented.
It is hard to imagine the same level of box office success without IM and Cap, but then who was IM back in 2007? Hardly even a B-Lister. Marvel will make new favourites. Thors popularity has massively increased since Ragnarok and Infinity War methinks. Starlord is also very popular (Guardians 3 with Thor) is bound to be huge.
Black Panther was bigger than any Cap or Iron Man solo outing. Captain Marvel is also popular, as is Doctor Strange.
So yeah they have options, but more importantly they have that proven track record.

Without RDJ I dont believe the MCU is where it is today. Was he the only factor? No. But he was the driving force that got people interested and was the focal point throughout the 22 films. Your question was would DC be as big as IW or EG and the answer is no. Can DC compete with Thor/Strange/Guardians? The answer is yes. I think Wonder Woman and Aquaman prove that.
You do have a good point about the FF and Xmen though. The first crossover will be huge.
Sure he started it but many other dominoes had to fall into place to get where it is today. Dceus biggest hits can compete with middle of the pack MCU hits but not their biggest ones. All Avengers films easily leapt past one billion but despite WW JL was a disaster.
There was a clear vision and the manner in which they ended EG is so insane to conclude stories that began 22 films ago.
If the dceu strung together a few hits and had a clear vision things could turn around but thus entire generation is marvel. I know long time Superman fans who despite loving cavil think the MCU is on another level. The MCU won over a good portion of the dc fanatics.
Shazam was critically well received, Joker could possibly be an awards contender and BOP will do very well. Like it or not Harley is popular and a draw.
So was a trek beyond but movies are not financed on good vibes. Money talks. MCU makes billion dollar films, only one dceu one to date. I guess you are content with second rate.
