he does kinda come close to decapitating himeself there.
and why did he bother to switch his lightsaber off?

That's the thing, I don't think it was switched off, the blade passes through his neck but without leaving a mark.

Something tells me it was the best take and the people doing rotoscope figured the scene was fast enough that no one would notice.

that starbust effect right before the saber shrinks down-thats the effect for a saber powering down. im sure it wasnt meant to go down like that, and they got too lazy to do a reshoot. but the intention (improvised) is clearly that the saber is switched off a split second before he cuts his own head off.
