Blu-rays are pretty sweet. Can't beat the hi-def picture and improved sound.
But I'll miss the days of special packaging. Most releases don't have an insert with artwork & a scene list. And the most random releases have some artwork on the inside of the sleeve: Casino Royale, Spiderman, The Mask of Zorro, Rambo 1-3, The Fifth Element, Evil Dead II, Moon, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Cliffhanger, Black Hawk Down, are most of the ones with them in my collection. Oh, and The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile both have special digi-pack packaging. That's about it.
Mostly you just get ads and annoying instructions for how to acquire the digital copy and how to use the 3D capacity. And this digital copy shit is annoying. They expire after a while, so if you get a used copy it probably won't work, and they seem to always look like shit anyway. Downloading a good hi-def ripped copy is a much better bet. I wish more discs came with DVD copies included. I find that it's much nicer having a DVD copy because not everyone has a Blu-ray player these days. Only 5 of my blu-rays have DVDs included with them. But it seems that most new-releases these days get DVDs included. I hope.
I thought it was helpful two years ago when they started to release new movies in Blu-ray/DVD combo packs, to get people weaned on Blu-rays without fretting over which one to buy; less than six months after my first combo pack purchase, I got a PS3 for Blu-ray watching.
And last year is when I noticed virtually all special features were getting put on the Blu-ray disc and not on the DVD; if you got hooked on the information DVDs gave you, you had to upgrade.
You still get the opportunity for special packaging when you buy at Future Shop here in Canada. Certain films come in 'Steelbook' editions that look slick.

Blu-Rays are ok. I have one and Im getting 2 more from Christmas. Though I don't think there will be a transition from DvD to Blu-Ray. At least not in the way DvD destroyed VHS. Over all I enjoy the collectors editions Blu-Rays bring out, which is why I am getting the ones I am for Christmas but I don't like them enough to go spending money to replace my DVD's.
I'm not so lucky here in the States.. I've actually printed out some internet artwork (with Photoshop touch-ups) and put them in the blu-ray packaging. Some of them have turned out pretty nice.
Oh hell, no. No one in their right mind (unless they're insanely rich) would go and replace every DVD with the blu-ray version. I've replaced a precious handful or so that I really love, but that's it. And even the ones I've replaced I've waited to get a decent deal, under $10 or so.
They've been around a while, but like Blacky said up there, they haven't exactly abolished DVDs the same way DVDs abolished VHS. I've seen very few VHS movies since the advent of DVD/blu-ray.
No Blu-rays haven't abolished dvds. I'm just saying if I was to buy or rent a movie these days, I'll go for the blu-ray format, simply for the better sound, picture & bonus material.
I know of a serious movie collector who owns over 5000 copies of movies. His collection consist of the vhs, dvd & now blu-ray version of the same movies, not to mention buying them again in the box-sets & director's cut. You walk into his house & every room is lined with shelves of movies...it's insane!
I would only go that far for certain films and series, like Star Wars.
I didn't get the Star Wars OT DVDs when they were released in 2004 until years later, because I had spent a pretty penny for the SE Laserdisc box set in 1997. It was only once I got an HDTV - and found that Lasersics may look awesome on a tube TV but not on a HDTV - that I gave in and started replacing the Laserdiscs in my collection. So far, I have only re-bought one movie on Blu-ray that I had on DVD (and also Widescreen VHS) - 2001: A Space Odyssey. I'll probably eventually give in and get Star Wars on Blu-ray as well.

That was one of the ones I replaced as well! It is an excellent blu-ray. The picture is superb. Traded in my DVD, though I kind of wish I had hung on to it, too. Oh well... Others that I upgraded (stuff that I know I'll watch again and again):

^ I've bought The Matrix Trilogy 3 different times. I traded in the original releases of the separate DVDs, and bought the 10 disc DVD collection. And now I've also got the blu-ray Ultimate Collection, heh.. sucks.
