RIP Xbox Live?

You want to be on Xbox Live for 12 months? $120 please!

https://twitter.com/wario64/status/...8800734209?s=21

That'll teach us to like things! Seriously, wtf is this?! I don't care about game pass, I just want to be online and play the games I own. It's not enough our internet providers are demanding of us, Xbox wants you to pay in the triple digits to play games now? F this!

There is no way in HELL I'm going to pay 120 for a year of live lol. I never even payed 60 for a year (you messed up if you ever payed full price for live). CD Keys is the way to go

Could you imagine that? 120 dollars just for the "privilege" of playing online. Legit lol

And whose to say Sony won't follow suit if this becomes the price norm? It wasn't 'til Xbox priced their online services during the 360 era that multiplayer on PlayStation 3 stopped being free to play. This is something straight out of a nightmare.

I doubt it. While yes, Sony did follow along so they could also make a profit, Sony has made something of a habit of letting Microsoft f*ck up, then pointing out how they won't do that and ganking their business. The most famous probably being the whole "we have a disc so if your friend wants to borrow it...give them the disc".

So while Xbox is making Live $120 for a year, Sony had a deal right before New Years(that might still be going on) that gave you 2 years of PS Plus for the price of one. So $50-60 bucks for 24 months of online gaming. Half the price of Xbox Live for twice the amount of time.

They reverted the prices.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/01...e-gold-pricing/

"We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.

We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. For free-to-play games, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.

If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months."

Pretty much why PC gaming isn't going away anytime soon. Got an internet connection, coop all you want. Plenty of free options too, like Path of Exile or Rocket League.

That is absolutely bonkers to me though. Price increases/inflation is to be expected, but doubling it in a single jump? What in the ****?

I have to imagine they were trying to drive people to gamerpass.

Microsoft is awful.

Fun fact: Back when Left 4 Dead was the big thing, Microsoft wouldn't let Valve release their map packs for free on their platform. It was free on ALL OTHER platforms... EXCEPT for Xbox 360.

I know this is irrelevant to the current situation, but it shows that Microsoft really doesn't give a ****.

News flash. No publicly traded company truly "gives a shit".

Anyway, of the big three, Sony has easily been the most awful lately.

Yeah which is funny. The service you try to push down throats would ultimately (no pun) be your ruin. The Series X/S, Halo Infinite & other future titles, the Bethesda buyout, years of trust built. All that would've been for nothing and they quickly knew it.

I imagine too the third parties (Activision, EA) also got on Microsoft's case about that 'cause they need the players and to see a whole console's worth of gamers leaving be no bueno.

The price hike felt like them testing the waters, albeit a really weird way of doing so. Many figured it wasn't gonna stick though, but still maddening it was even proposed by someone over there to begin with. People aren't gonna forget this too even as MS continues doing right like they otherwise had been lately. They'll have shade thrown at them again for awhile because of January 22nd which could've been avoided.

Not that you should fully trust any of the big 3 (MS, Sony, Nintendo) like that anyway. None of them truly give a shit as pointed out. You're just a statistic to them, but I'm glad the competition keeps each other in check to a point. MS would've been laughed at by everyone else had they stayed the course with this, as their stock went down, more and more of their previous supporters jumped ship again, etc. MS would've caved in one way or another had they not reversed the price decision as quickly as they did. Also glad they made free to play games an exception to playing online on their service now.

Bastion's Dreamers DLC was supposed to be free, but the devs claimed because of MS's policies on hosting services at the time, they were forced to charge a dollar for it.

Not disagreeing about the price hike.

Just saying it's a great deal.

For them.

You're paying for glorified rentals, and lose access the moment you stop paying.
