Syzygy Darklock is a key character in the Space Opera Dreadstar, premier title of Epic Comics. Syzygy is a sort of sorcerer, the founder of the team which stars in that series. Syzygy is also a webcomic by Alicorn.[2]

In "The Price", Syzygy's brother is murdered by a demon. Syzygy finds the demon, only to find that he had been sucked into a plot that required him to become more powerful that he could comprehend. Using an amulet of white light, he forces the demon to bring him to a level of reality where the gods stored their power. The ordeal basically killed Darklock, but his will, his great magical ability, and his powerful sense of self-belief allowed his body to still function while cybernetics were grafted onto him. He had lost both legs, his right ear, and his left eye to gain power. He confronts the wizard who ordered his brother's death, only to learn that the wizard did so precisely to bring about Syzygy's ascent to power. He shows Syzygy a vision of the future where a great "event" is soon to happen (the light of the dying Milky Way reaching the Empirical Galaxy), which will have a great positive effect on humanity. In order to bring about this event, Syzygy will need great power--even more than he already has. The wizard shows him a way he can get it. Furious at being made the wizard's tool, Syzygy destroys him, and then makes a terrible bargain to gain even more magical power (though this time in a form that will not damage him further.) He now dwarfs any other individual in the Empirical Galaxy in mystical power.
