Can we who dont know find out about the armor? Just because its built to fight Impirex or the celestials or who ever else dosnt mean it works that well. What kind of defenses does the armor have against magic? If the armor is technilogical only then naw, magic will trump technology almost every time.

The armor actually started thinking on it's own (having memories) and was taking over John. It was definitely his essence. Darkseid knew it was able to destroy the universe which is why he wanted Superman to wear it as it would have been ironic.
