Hulk is an icon of the "Rando" generation during the early ninties/late eighties where musclebound men were popular. He certainly inspired alot of young, insecure boys.
Wonder Woman tops him out as an icon for being the first (Hawkgirl was technically first but nobody recognized it...) female superhero. She was crucial to BOTH feminist movements in US history. She started the girl power cultural movement. Without her, there would be no Buffy, no Storm, no Jean Grey, no Invisible Woman, no Lara Croft. etc. WW broke the gender boundaries of the female always being the damsel of distress. WW has inspired women's rights all across the world. Few comicbook characters have had a real-life impact on politics, government policy and people period like she has.
As for who's the better character, that's a matter of opinion.

WW is recognized even in countries where TV and movies aren't that prevailing. WW's tv dvd sales surpass the Hulk's TV show dvd sales. WW is a deeply complex character who is/was/will be a Goddess, A princess, a queen, a super hero, a champion of peace, a ruthless ass kicking killer if she has to be, the universes choice as the symbol of the truth, the wielder of the Godwave, an idol to millions in the DCU, hated and feared by millions, founding member of the world's most powerful team, a secret agent, and that's just off the top of my head. She's a wonder and complex character who even to this day comands Linda Carter a hefty appearance check.
