Did you miss that she can phase through adamantium, it just hurts her. And over the years that's been inconsistent, in some cases it has in others it hasn't. And that she just spent a year and a half in her head developing her powers so that things that were once Kitty-proofed no longer are.

How about he isn't hitting anything if she just sinks into the ground and pulls him under then lets go.
