Wasn't Classic Thor bashing through Magneto's shields before Magneto escaped. Magneto admitted that he could only handle a few more strikes from Mjolnir before his shields collapsed.

I guess it all depends on the writing at the time.

Check the Thor Respect thread for the Mjolnir vs Magneto force field thing.
