The shaman used ancient rune magic fueled by his own blood, then he cursed them to never find their destination or sail for 10,000 years, or something like that. The problem was, when he got skewered by an arrow, the runestone fed on all his blood, magnifying and increasing the spell as long as it was fed. That's what made them invincible and strong enough to hand Thor his ass rather casually.

Thor actually broke his wrists nearly all the way off hitting him with Mjiolnir.

He was from a 5 part mini.

He was so durable that Thor's wrists were literally hanging by the skin when he hit him in the head with Mjiolnir.

He tossed a police car one handed without much effort.

I think he and his crew also defeated a couple heroes, but I can't be sure since I don't have access to the comic anymore.

He was purely invincible and was strong enough to manhandle Thor.

And he couldn't be injured unless you drank the potion that Strange made.
