In my opinion the Griffin was influenced heavily by Nova; however, it had strong elements of Squadron Supreme (original series) and Miracleman as well as adding a Government conspiracy.

It's doubtful now how much of the Skrull/Xandar war of this era is canon, Nova had only a basic powerset at this point.

The Skrull/Xandar war is deep rooted in the characters back story and has been included in every bio and touched on in every volume since. Also, the battle of Epyrus 7 is a vital aspect of the what makes him tick.

I'll lean towards the Griffin. Dude was a pro, Nova never really quite caught stride as a seasoned hero until the very end of volume 1.

And yet he was being spoken to like a Rookie and treated like one at the beginning of Annihilation. People only treat him as battle hardened subsequent to Annihilation.

Yeah, I think the Griffin would win.

I hear you. Not sure what Giffen was going for with that, especially considering that Rich was not only a Nova, but was a damned centurion prime at one point to boot! I guess continuity wise he was an "official" nova corpsman for 5 years prior to Annihilation, but he was Nova well before he even had knowledge of the corps and Xandar et al. Also the Skrull/Xandar war is Canon to the Fantastic Four, The Sphinx and to a lesser extent, Galactus vis-a-vis his fight with the Sphinx during that time. That's a lot of character history tied into that event for it to not be considered Canon smile

But in FF he led the battle against the Skrulls, that all seems forgotten now with the Annihilation continuity. It was kind of avoided in things like the story where he returned to Earth and met the New Warriors.
